Some people do, but personally I don't think it's wise. My preferred strategy is to not use potions for the first level or so (shouldn't be too hard if you're playing carefully) and gather up a bunch. Then, the first time you meet a particularly nasty enemy on D:2, 3 or even 4 - say Sigmund, Grinder, an Ogre, etc - you lure him over to some upstairs and go up to the already-cleared level behind you. Then quaff-ID various potions, hoping to get something like Haste, Might, Invisibility, Berserk, Agility, etc. If you get one, go down and use it to smash the nasty's face in, assuming you feel confident with whatever buff you got. If you get something situationally bad, like Lignification, Cancellation, Ambrosia, Decay, etc, no real harm done.


...Huh. That's actually a good idea. My usual strategy is to try to avoid using any potions until the Ecumenical Temple, then just quaff-ID everything while standing in the temple. Same idea - nothing there to hurt me if I get something like a potion of confusion or poison - but I also waste any good potions that get hit.

I tend to scroll-ID potions nowadays, since with all beneficial wands gone, there's no reason to keep Identify scrolls around, really.

Also I feel really bad knowing I'm about to splat this glorious minotaur in the Depths:

edit: Come to think of it, he could've just cast Shadow Creatures, but I'm still relatively sure enemies can read scrolls of summoning. As sure as I can be at 6 a.m. at least

The runelock effectively locks you in a single path if you want to skip Lair. While before you could go Vaults, get TSO to max piety in the Crypt, try the earlier Abyss, or take a short dive through the Hells, now you basically have no place to go after the Dungeon, except Depths.

Copy the save, then open that copy up in Wizard mode to see if the double-branded weapon does indeed do more damage.

I've no other source of rElec, and in Zot Electric Golems will fuck you up. Besides, don't get fooled by the 24 dodge skill, I'm not really dodging much in a GDA.

However 41 SH with Reflection is absolutely hilarious. Since I had pretty much the same items in Elf, I just strolled casually around while people killed themselves with arrows and spells. Unfortunately it appears that fiends nowadays have absolutely no problem tormenting even if other enemies are going to get hurt, but that didn't really slow me down much. (However RIP Ye Olde Hellbeaste trick, thou shalt be misst)

edit: Pop quiz: how many of you knew that Tomb no longer has stairs, just escape hatches?

How is the game now compared to old .11?

I remember when I stopped it seemed like the dev's started focusing on making things a fair bit easier, though I can't remember why I thought that, but I was disappointed about some change they did.

Tomb was always one of the hardest branches, with a few odd builds being the exception.

I lost my 14-rune BaBe there, mostly because I wasn't sure what Tomb would be like without stair dancing and not wanting to just quit. The layout is changed, with a few more closed rooms, but... well let's just say I'm not really fond of the change. It may take a while to find a reliable strategy, since just shoving my face down and random-teleporting was not really successful; problem is so few runs ever get to Tomb, that I probably won't even be able to watch other people try it on Webtiles.

Also they've messed with Statueform a bit, and they've added Airstrike to the starting Air Elementalist spellbook. It's a pretty good book now.

Anyone have experience messing with the console colours in the options? The whole thing is a bit of a mystery to me.

I tried playing Trunk as opposed to the last stable version (which I normally prefer), but for whatever reason the colours are messed up in a way which I just can't stand. Unseen map tiles, unselected skills in the skill menu, and system messages (e.g. 'Unknown command') are all this horrible dark blue colour - the same colour as black bears' glyph - that is very difficult to make out against the black background of the console window. And my inventory, by contrast, is entirely uncoloured (no dark grey for empty wands, no yellow for scrolls of blinking, etc).

I'm using PuTTY to connect to CAO, if that helps.

I've had this happen a few times when moving up versions. I suspect something goes screwy and fails to import your options file correctly, but haven't dug too far into it. Just reset the Options file, and readd any changes you might have done manually.
