The first time I entered Orc:4, I ran right into Saint Roka, and decided to go explore some other branches first. Well, I finally cleared the level, and there was also Nergalle, and some kind of huge orc temple with tens of priests, something like five high priests and a sorcerer, all in this vault with some shops in the middle. Roka took ridiculous amounts of beating before going down, and the high-level orcs had some nasty demon summoning powers. I was nearly killed by a hellion. The shops carried some nice randart armour, though. I'm a bit torn between the +2 robe of Tostudwi {Str+5 Dex-3 Int+2} and the +5 mottled dragon armour of the Turtledove {+Rage Stlth++}

The Int bonus helps with spell hunger, which remains something of an issue for my spriggan metabolism. I can't cast the really expensive spells yet, though, and the Hive has preposterous amounts of food stashed away, but Ignite Poison still isn't hungerless and it's a bit of a hassle to drop whatever I'm doing to go replenish my stores every now and then. The Str bonus is nice for the carrying capacity, but I don't really need it. Already got a randart ring with +4.

The mottled dragon armour, on the other hand, gives me like six points more AC. And stealth, I guess, although I'm already quite sneaky and not really relying on it.

Also, I finally got the mutation resistance mutation from a potion, and drinking more doesn't seem to have any effect. I'm apparently locked at fangs 1, hooves 1, fire resistance 2, regeneration 1, AC +4, and of course the mutation resistance. Not too bad. I'm going to keep drinking those mutation potions, of course, on the off chance that I still have a small chance of getting mutated and just haven't hit it yet.

I could use a better buckler, so I'm planning on taking a stab at Elf. I got quite a bit of MR from being a spriggan. I'm considering memorizing Alistair's Intoxication. I'm pretty sure I got a book of party tricks stashed somewhere, and Ashenzari grants clarity.

Oh, and I've got this +0 rod of destruction (ice), and I've been getting some good use out of the freezing clouds. Would it be worth it buffing it up with the scrolls of enchant weapon and recharging I've been hoarding in my stash?

I would certainly buff it with scrolls of recharging. That's what they're for. Using them on wands in generally a waste.

I would definetly use that mottled dragon armor. That's a nice randart. I suppose if 2 Int is all you need to get another level of spell down to hungerless or whatever, go for it. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. 5 AC is quite a bit, especially if you don't have much AC to begin with.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

My SeTr
Sludge Elf Troll? I want one! You really meant SETm.  Transmuter is Tm, not Tr.

Also: Don't use the larger shields (not bucklers) if you don't have reasonable shield skill, and are going to be using melee AT ALL.  The penalties can be HUGE. Try starting a HuFi, I dare you.

Not to mention 28% guaranteed damage reduction on all melee attacks.

Of course, if you aren't going stealthy and don't melee much at all, the extra modifiers (stealth, +rage) are pretty useless, but still not bad to have.

Of course, EV penalties from armor are made worse by virtue of being Spriggan, but the EVP is only -1 to begin with, so a little armor skill should negate that. Just pay attention to how much it drops your EV.

Also, I finally got the mutation resistance mutation from a potion, and drinking more doesn't seem to have any effect. I'm apparently locked at fangs 1, hooves 1, fire resistance 2, regeneration 1, AC +4, and of course the mutation resistance.

This is only true if you have level 3 of mutation resistance (the "you may no longer mutate" one). Otherwise, they slip through sometimes. However, mutation from excessive glow is never, ever fully protected against.

Also: Those are some good mutations!

Keep in mind that using spells on rods still makes you hungry, with the hunger cost reduced by (evocations * 10). I don't recommend using scrolls on those, especially recharging, since you can recharge those just by waiting and you want to save those for wands like healing, haste, and teleportation.

You do realize that recharging a rod makes it recharge faster and increases the max charge it can store, right? Not sure if it's worth it, but I would at least throw a single scroll at it if you're using the rod and running out of charges on it. A +1 rod recharges a lot faster than a +0 rod.

Whoops, sorry. I didn't know that. Could actually be useful then, if you can spare the points. Hunger might still be an issue though, which is why I avoid rods when playing a spellcaster unless I don't have to care about food for some reason, or when I really need to use them.

Any tips for a new player? I've mucked around with a bit already. Highest experience level I've got a character to is 7.

Play a Sludge Elf Transmuter, they have the easiest early game. Fight unarmed, distil corpses, and hit anything that's dangerous (such as snakes, ogres, gnoll packs or orc priests) and not poison resistant with evaporated potions of confusion. Throw in sticks to snakes if the situation looks dire, then run for it while the snakes cover your escape. When you get spider form you'll make short work of large groups of confused enemies, just give each enemy two bites to get them to "x looks even sicker" and move onto the next one. With these tactics and running from strong things that can't be affected by poison you should be able to clear Lair, Orc and Hive (use ice form in Hive, it resist poison).

Alternatively, play a troll berserker or a spriggan enchanter.

Trolls have a ridiculous healing rate, nasty unarmed attacks (don't use a shield), plenty of HP and Trog makes you nigh invincible while berserking. You just need to eat almost everything in sight....

Spriggan enchanters are fast, need almost no food and spend most of the game stabbing enemies in the back of the head. Use and dagger to reach lvl 2, learn enscorcelled hibernation which puts anything not cold resistant to sleep, and then stab then to death. Use confusion for things that wake up or you don't kill in a single stroke. When you can, learn invisibility  to let you kill crowds of sleeping monsters without waking them up.

Try a DDNe. It was what I used for my 1st win.

1. Find a butchering tool, and switch to an axe when you find one.
2. Cast Pain on everything (it doesn't hurt you), until you can cast Vampiric Draining at "Great".
3. Upgrade your armor (robe --> ring mail --> etc.)
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
5. Find Makhleb's altar and worship him.

You may want to learn some other necromancy spells, like Revivification and Dispel Undead to make things easier.

I'm trying DJ's suggestion first, just for the heck of things.

I've made it to experience level 2, having found an uncursed mace early on. It's easy to kill things when you can bash their skulls in. :P

Managed to memorise Evaporation and Sticks to Snakes, so that's good.

...And I was retarded and tried to put on armor while under attack...

*Facepalm*

Let's try this again.

Can't access an IRC client. I'm behind a firewall.

And besides, there's just something satisfying about bludgeoning your enemies to death.
