I go for jewelery if I don't have any good ones on and because I am generally always a mage of some type staff comes next.
1. Grabs a jewellery base type, this has a 1 in 3 chance of being a amulet and a 2 in 3 chance of being a ring. If you've already identified that base type it will try again. It will continue this until it hits a type you have not yet identified or until it has tried 10 times.
2. Rings of hunger and amulets of inaccuracy have a 92.09% chance of being randarts. Other jewellery has a 28.85% chance of being a randart. This is independent from the base type calculation, otherwise.
For each weapon skill (out of SBl, LBl, Axs, M&F, Pla, Stv, Slg, Bws, Crb), chance to get a weapon of that skill: approximately (1 + that weapon skill level) divided by (8 + sum of all weapon skill levels). Chance to get an artefact weapon: approximately 21%.
If your best magic skill is fire, ice, air, earth, poison, conj, necro, summ or ench, you will get the matching staff. If your best magic skill is evocations, you will likely (75%) get a random rod. Otherwise you get wizardry, channeling, power, or energy. If you already *are carrying* your skill's staff, or your skill is invocations, random staff.
In 0.5 book acquirement changed, gifts are non-deterministic (but weighted by your casting skills), you can get randart spellbooks and acquirement via scrolls has a chance of producing a manual.
1. Will only give armour that you can currently wear (factoring in feet, claws, horns, body size). Troll/dragon armours are possible, but are rare (and the better types even more so).
2. Will also give shields, rather than just worn armour. Will never give an unenchanted hide, but loves giving unenchanted animal skins! (This is fixed in 0.6.)
Equal chance of: elemental items, disc of storms, crystal balls (except for fixation), bottled efreet, box of beasts, lantern of shadows and the various decks (except for punishment).

If you worship Fedhas, you get fruit! Ghouls get some chunks, vampires get potions of blood, everyone else gets rations or honeycombs or royal jellies.
1. Gives you a wand. Certain wands have much higher weights, including healing and hasting. Wands you haven't seen yet have double weight.
2. Chance of getting healing with all others identified is 30%. (Same for hasting.)
