Losing is not fun.
Crawl has that problem, but their goal list says they're working on making sure it doesn't have to happen.

I hope that they do make it a little more interesting in that regard.  Right now I die around character level 10 and just despair; it seems like a terrible waste.  Not to mention that by dying, you then must contend with your former self.  It's a hard game that only becomes harder when you die.

That said... I really like how hard it is, but I can't help but feel terrible after I loose a character (especially if it is the RNG's fault).

I know how you feel.  When I started out, I couldn't get past D:4 for the life of me.  Now I have a win.  All I can say is keep trying, you learn a lot as you try new things, get further in the game.  And if you have too much trouble with ghosts, try playing a Deep Dwarf Necromancer, they drop them like flies.  But the main thing to remember about ghosts is that you don't have to fight them.  In fact, that's an important part of crawl in general, choosing your battles.  The second you see something that could kill you, run.  You can fight them later.

The thing about the RNG is you can't give it the chance to screw you over.  Don't take chances, unless you're willing to lose the character.  Though there is the occasional time that you can't do anything, and you just get killed.

Agnes comes into view. She is wielding a runed lajatang.
Helpless, Agnes fails to dodge your attack.
Agnes fails to defend herself. You spit Agnes like a pig!!!
You kill Agnes!

You kill Louise!

Edit: Tried to get the drop on Nikola and it didn't work out, but an Orange Demon dealt with it. This is feeling faintly ridiculous.

i thought i read that you could urge bad mutations from yourself without removing your good mutations. i have run into some purple ugly things and i'm considering trying out the strange side of things.

anyone know if there is a way to remove bad mutations but not good ones?

Supposedly the slime god is the only thing in the game that can do that reliably.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

i lucked out and ate two pieces of meat, received the see invisible and fire resistance mutations. stopped there for now.

also how do you take screen shots? i have an awesome picture to take and its on of the reasons why fedhas isnt that bad of a god to have.

edit - it appears all i can get is a solid black box... so i'll describe. i'm in the orc mines level 2, i just slaughtered everything in the room with my bare hands, mephetic cloud and poison dart. once everything was dead i turned all the corpses into mushrooms. i now have a two mushroom thick tome of mushrooms :P all of which i can turn into wandering mushrooms if i wanted.

Dunno how you manage it straight through crawl or even if that's possible. Printscreen + paint is the standard method for windows users who don't bother getting anything more powerful or useful in the way of screenshot programs and image editors.

I guess you could do a chardump; it's got a little ASCII rendition of your immediate surroundings and recent messages that you could cut out and post.

Supposedly the slime god is the only thing in the game that can do that reliably.

A high-power draw of the "Helix" card from certain decks also has a higher-than-normal chance of removing a bad mutation and giving a good one. Xom also has better-than-even odds of giving good mutations and removing bad ones, although this depends heavily on his interest.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

also Xom doesn't give you the REALLY bad mutations like teleport or anger.

Yeah, Xom just surrounds you with hostile demons every now and then. :P

Personally, I find the deaths I could have avoided more irritating. Sometimes you get shanked by the RNG, and that's fine, but usually there is some painfully obvious course of action I could have taken to save myself, and really have no one to blame for dying but me. THAT is annoying.

EDIT: Lost another OgTr to a hydra. Tried to blink away, but the spell failed to move me away from the hydra, and rather landed me on the opposite side of it, at which point the hydra ate me. I think the main problem with these ogres is that although they are HP powerhouses, their AC and EV kind of suck. The super high strength is nice, though, and I could take most things up to the hydra with little issue. Maybe I should just learn to stay away from hydras?

Do you use Ice Form against hydras?

i'm now playing a draconian summoner, found two rings of wizardy already but swapped one out for an unidentified ring that gives 5 evasion 4 strength and 4 dex (holy crap, i wonder what else it does)

also, poison breath attack against assorted orcs stuck in a corridor = win

edit - god damned electric eels! i had a swarm of animals and they still killed me in three turns. they were not nearly that hard in my last play through, of course i didnt run into them till much later. damn it that character was going so well too.
