Anyway, I finished watching Somethingorother no Grimgar. It was pretty good. Felt like the pacing was a bit off in the last couple of episodes, and there were a few mistakes in the animation, but other than that it was a good watch.
The story is straightforward, there's nothing particularly notable there. The main draw is the setting - a gritty fantasy world with characters who struggle to survive - and it does that well.
Definitely one of my top shows this season (although that's not saying much when 90% of them are crap).

It's what Kyubey said about Sayaka's wish though; is Sayaka really wanting Kamijo to be happy, or is she wanting Kamijo to be something more to her than what he is? One of the major triggers for Sayaka's breakdown is when Hitomi snatches Kamijo away from her, so it seems like the latter is the case.

Homura didn't just want Madoka to survive the battle with Walpurgisnacht. She accomplished that, and Madoka ultimately proved her selflessness by taking on the curses and despair of every magical girl in existence. What Homura wants is for Madoka to stick around and be her idealized best friend forever and ever. So she kidnapped/cloned/whatever'd human!Madoka into existence and fucked up the universe. And, when Homura made a major advance on the clueless Madoka, at the very end of the film, she clearly wasn't happy with Madoka's lukewarm response.

It might be important to note that staying around as an idealized best friend forever and ever; living a "normal" life was what Madoka wanted at the very beginning of the tv show too. Though I'll definitely give you that the line between utmost selfishness and utmost selflessness that is focused around a single other person's desires happens to be a very thin one in this case, and is definitely close enough to be up to epileptic tree fan interpretations at this point.

I'd say that's the exact opposite of what Madoka wanted at the beginning, actually. She basically says she's not worth anything living the way she is. She's willing to become a magical girl just for the sake of being someone other than who she sees herself as, which sounds like the opposite of wanting to continue living a normal life.

I definitely feel a little unsatisfied. I get Homura's motivations, just... something about this feels less relatable than the series. The best I can come up with now is that I'd prefer this type of resolution to be in a more human context than the original plot. Rewriting the universe and becoming a godlike entity meshes better with a plot of hope, and I feel like they missed an opportunity here to create more interesting contrasts than they did.

I don't know though, I'm still chewing on it a bit. I do appreciate that it gave me this much to think about, and there's other stuff that was just done fantastically, like the visuals. I've got no complaints there. I love how the city gradually became more stylized as the plot moved along. I just don't know if this lives up to the original.

I was about to argue "Homura's not that selfish!", but she totally is. Maybe not at first, but by the end she was totally okay with everybody else dying as long as Madoka was alright.

I still didn't really care for the movie, but I'll have to think harder about why.

I guess she is selfish, but not in the traditional sense. She dedicated her entire being to achieving the objective of "protect Madoka" to the point where basically everything else was either not considered at all or only considered in relation to said goal. So, she wasn't truly working toward just her own desires, imo - a selfish person wouldn't usually put themselves through that much suffering for something that ultimately benefits somebody else.

When you consider that Homura spent close to 100 loops to save Madoka, it makes a freakish lot of sense why Homura would automatically do things to protect Madoka from anything, including her own self. That's nearly 12 years of endless looping. Homura didn't change at all from any of those times she looped.

And irrelevant to the main discussion, but Homura was dooming herself to her fate with every loop, since her looping made Madoka exceptionally powerful. Her main flaw is acceptance, or its lack of it. So, naturally when Madoka's other self states she wouldn't sacrifice her own self, her perceptions turned upside down.

Seems like emotion manipulation might be an innate power of the Windemere race or something, which would explain the Var syndrome. Was not expecting that space naked newtype style scene.

The live-action movie is one of my favorite anime-to-live-action adaptations.

It is pretty good.

Heck when its only flaw is I think it spends too much time in the "Phoenix Wright is incompetent" stage... it is a pretty good movie. Wish that sequel it hinted at came to fruition.
