Who else thinks that Excel's voice in the English dubbed version of Excel Saga actually seems to fit the character much better than the original Japanese voice acting?

It is the unfortunate case where the problem is that voice was TOO good.

I really liked the ending to excel saga. I can't remember exactly what it entailed, but I remember liking it.

Do you mean the episode that was purposefully too obscene and vulgar to be shown on Japanese television? Or do you mean the episode immediately before that one?

Hmm, probably makes it to the top of my personal favorites of anime characters and takes the "I wanna be that guy" position.

Not quite.
It's about the character, not the setting he is in.

Additionally it's borderline-harem at best.

Yuki is simply incapable to care for him (well not exactly true, as it's suggested much later in the show). Nevertheless it's not enough for a relationship.
While Mikuru and Kyon are certainly interested in each other, she isn't allowed to get involved with anyone in that timeframe.
Haruhi is only dropping very subtle clues every now and then (I didn't notice most of them until after the show), however Kyon is oblivious to them or simply doesn't care until... the last episode?
