A friend reccomended High School of the Dead to me recently, and I gave it a watch. He told me "I'd like it because of the zombies." I've watched 4 out of 12 episodes so far.
...
I swear to god, it's chock-full of unnecessary fan-service, and it's fucking brutal. I think it's a suitably terrifying mixture.
There's this one part where these two schoolgirl chicks are running and then they're like "Lol we're best friends so nothing can touch us as long as we stick together yaaay"
Five seconds later, one of the girls gets grabbed by a zombie and is being pulled down some stairs. They're still holding hands and all, so you'd think Girl numero uno would try to help her friend.
She's screaming for her friend to help her and the other girl's like "fuck no bitch" and kicks her face, sending her down the stairwell, zombies in tow.
Then, no less than three seconds later, she gets nommed by more zombies, screaming all the while.
There's this other part where a stereotypical bully is ranting about how this is all a dream (a phrase many would-be zombie treats often repeat before they become meals themselves) and how he's got to wake up and shout at all the freshmen.
Cue him jumping out of a window and onto the pavement.
I also like how they're being more 'scientific' with the zombies (or as scientific as you can get; they're zombies). Apparently the zombies detect people through vibrations. They're blind and deaf, and feel no pain, and like Romero's classical shufflers, they require a good head-bashing to put 'em down for good.
There's this one scene where these two kids perform a quick experiment. The girl wets towels, and throws them onto the zombie. No response from said ghoul. But when she throws a wet towel at a locker right beside the zombie, it starts running into the locker.
Out of all the cast, I really like this Kohta kid. He's a chubby nerd who is pretty cool in my book. He seems to be doing pretty well in the emotional department (hasn't seen any loved ones bitten, hasn't had to mercy kill any infectees, etc etc). When Little Ms. Superbitch (pink haired straight-A student named Takagi, that's my nickname for her) begins to doubt his usefulness, they duck into the place where they do wood shop and he improvises a nail-gun rifle. Cue awesomeness.
I swear to god I don't know what to think about this series. It's pretty brutal when it comes to deaths and such (I've lost count of all the One-Scene Wonders that pop up and die ~1 minute later) but all the main cast (women, anyways) have ridiculous amounts of fan service. The juxtaposition of inhumanly large boobs and panty shots with bloody, brutal head-bashing and moaning zombies biting the living fuck out of you is somewhat disturbing.
Anyways, does anyone know of any zombie anime/manga that aren't like this (in terms of fanservice)? I do like zombies...
