I like your new avatar Creaca. Fits you perfectly.
I know right? I have a smile similar to that any time I even think of forums.

Oh, and I saw a few episodes of Bantorra. Oh my god. These guys are not afraid to kill off Main Characters. Even interesting ones. Pretty ballsy so far.

As a writer, I'm not found of killing main characters. Its a lot of investment to kill them off, and for myself, they're the main character because I find them interesting. Maiming, is fine. In a web comic I am developing with a pattern the main character Kyle Terry Morance, does get killed by one of the other two protangist, and s/he becomes the main villain for the next group of heros (Which are made out of Kyle students). Kyle gets his left hand torn off, and the person who kills Kyle gets his/her eye gored, melted out.

YOU CANT DODGE MY ATTACKS IM A HIGHER LEVEL THEN YOU
I HAVE THE HIGHER GROUND ANAKIN

And he got like two attacks of opportunity on Anakins, that turned out to be crits. It wasnt a good day for Anakin.
That fight scence almost makes up for the entire movie. If bleach had sword play like that I'd watch it through its lame stories. >.>

As a reader, I find the author killing off a Main Character interesting. I think it shows that the story is one where anyone can die. And I like that. Though if the MCs are killed off and replaced to frequently, it becomes boring.

And how can they be main characters if they dont stay around?

I said A main character. Kill too many too often and it is repetetive and they aren't really main characters anymore.

In Watchman the Comedian dies in the first 10 minutes(Or pages, if you prefer the Graphic Novel). He still becomes a major character as they explore his past.

Make everyone the main character.

Assemble cast don't work out well. Soap opera do this mostly okay.

The main issue is time. There isn't really enough time to dedicate to all characters equally.

Its rather hard to keep a story moving forward, and interesting while concentrating on all character equally.

Have to disagree with you there. The scenes involving him are too numerous and powerful to label him off as a simple plot device.

Hes the catalyst of the story, if that not a plot device then I dont know what is. The flashbacks do present him as a fully realized character, yes, but he has no affect on the story at hand and he used to explain the other character more then his affect on the story.

But he does effect the story, silk spectre's definatly. Just because he isn't present for most of the narrative doesn't mean he isn't a character. By the very act of showing us how he influenced the other characters Moore defines the comedian's character.

He's not a chekhovs gun.. And while i suppose you could make an arguement that he acts as a macguffin (Though he cant be a macuffin AND have no effect on the story), that doesn't preclude him from being a character at all. Characters can often be used as plot devices.

No the comedian only serves as a way of showing the character background to show where they are today, he doesnt do a damn thing stop actual bad  guy or discover the plot. He has no active hand to what is happening in the story.

The commedian is better case for a macguffin then a chekhovs gun, I concede that. Sorries.
