Bump for epic myth busting.

Heres one, do falling creatures that fly into other creatures get hurt? I've occasionally seen this, where the lower creature "catches" the falling creature and they are both unharmed, but it was far from a conclusive test.

If you drain the magma in a magma pipe down below its normal level and build a bauxite drawbridge there, then pump magma back in until it is above your drawbridge, then you lift the bridge, does it send magma flying everywhere?

Yeah, but what is the myth? That it will or that it won't?

Ya know, Like is the brown note real?

Well its known that rising drawbridges will hurl objects, so the myth is that it will also hurl liquids.

Imagine drawbridges with repeating raise/lower orders forming a DWARVEN SPRINKLER with water, or a DEATH SPRINKLER with magma.

Is cave adaption really permanent?
It seems to me that it isn't.  My military spent almost all their time indoors before being drafted, but after a few years of being stationed outdoors ~3/4 of the time they don't seem to be stunned or vomiting.
Maybe I just haven't caught them in the act.

I don't have the screenshots to prove it, but perhaps you can take my word.  I once had a fortress where pretty much everyone was cave adapted.  I built a meeting hall with wells and exposed the ceiling to sunlight (I also built a glass ceiling to keep unwanted stuff out).  For a long time, the floors were painted green.  After a good year or two, though, the vomit was not replaced, and dwarves were not seen being stunned in the meeting hall.  It wasn't sudden--over time more and more dwarves became irritated instead of nauseated until they were all comfortable.

I can second that. When my fortress needed better protection, I sent several dwarves on a patrol route around its outdoor features. For a while, the route was pretty much marked with vomit, but it subsided.

Followup to magma refilling.

Build a wall around the pipe 3-zlevels tall. Does magma refill that high?
Pump some amount of lava onto the top of it so it's partly full. Does it refill from there?

Someone bust the mythical fire sword.
Some say you can decorate a sword with fire imp bones (or anything else that burns) the sword will continue to burn, not harm the user and and do both slash damage (Or whatever damage a sword does) and burn.

Can I just note here for people reading this for actual information:

Some people are posting in this thread answers to myths without detailing how they found it out. I advise you to ignore these posts. Especially as earlier on (fish vermin question) two of them posted contradictory remarks (one said yes the other no). Another one I am unsure about is the magma pump pressure issue. Two people earlier stated simply "yes" to "does a magma pump have enough pressure to flood itself". This is wrong because it doesnt require pressure to flood itself, it drops the magma on the same level as itself and unless the magma is contained it will creep around adn burn the pump. This is basic and has nothing to do with pressure

My experiences are as follows: magma flows a lot faster by the pump outlet than otherwise, this suggests some pressure BUT:

Code: [Select]
___ ____
###MPP #
######SS

p is pump
M magma
S magma source
# rock
_ floor

This setup will NOT flood above the floor, adn therefore magma pumps on the floor level will not get burned. I have a 10 z-level magma pump tower to prove it.

My current fortress gate has retractable bridges over a 3-level pit that can optionally be flooded. Enemies usually suffer some damage, sometimes dying straightaway when it's dry, and no damage when it's filled. Not really a deliberate test though, but could be useful.
I'll try taking screenshots at my next siege.

Military dorfs are the busiest if their partner is also in the military, Military children are my forts future, also its hilariously tragic when a mother carrying her child into battle gets hit, and the baby dies....
I fixed that up for you.

Water can burn the dwarves? No offense meant in this Efun, but read harder.

"Having faith" that the bridge will not fall, implies that the bridge itself isn't that trustworthy. It's not that different from "I pray that the bridge will hold my weight."

It'd still be empty due to basic observation skills. Magma, first of all, (except for pumps) is litterally impossible to move in an upward direction. Second of all, in that graph type thingy, not even water does that, from my experiences at least. In my close to half a year of DF'ing, I've only ever see water rise up to the z-level right below the source. Not sure if it's due to faults with the system or what, but it simply will not happen.
