Team 1 - Tyline

Tyline, fumbling with his bow, watched as the First Elite grabbed his arrow and started rapidly flying toward his location. He could only utter a few words before the inevitable impact.

"Oh shit."

Team 1 - Vakari Delthera

Fuck, fuck, fuck-
(BANG)
Smith down, worse off than Maur. Trout and Dioren left.
(BANG)
It was almost like slow motion; his bullets flew and the First Elite danced beyond them, flames swallowing steel in her wake. He couldn't move his hands fast enough, she was faster than his aim.

(BANG)

He saw her head turn. Trout.

(BANG)

"GLUE, TROUT!"

(BANG)

"Dioren, ground!"
(BANG)
('Get to safety.' 'Make your shot count.' 'Do what you can.')
(BANG)
(A 'real' fight - as if treating this fight as 'not real' was at all the right course - would need a survivor to bring back news.)

(BANG)

They were going to lose this fight.

(BANG)

But like hell would he stop before it was over.

Team 1

Tyline's fingers and lungs both desperately scrambled to hold it together, but any chance of doing so was rapidly shattered. As was the boulder providing his cover. Reah drew back her fist for the finishing blow, but there was no need to follow through, as he slumped to the ground entirely on his own.

She didn't waste any time spinning in place and launching herself directly towards Vakari.

Team 1 - Vakari Delthera

BANG-BANG

A circle of flame grew from the center of his vision. She was coming for him. (The fight is ending.)

BANG-BANG

A ring of black closed in around the edges. Tunnel vision. (Death in a battle. But you've already lost.)

BANG-BANG

The First Elite is a small and highly-mobile target. (Much harder to hit than a dragon.)

BANG-BANG

But a line intersects itself at all points. (Dance for me, an iron requiem.)

BANG-BANG

Every bullet is a chance to live. (Every heartbeat a stanza of your song.)

Click

...overheated.
Fuck.

Steel flew toward flame, and Vakari could do naught but pray.

Team 1 - Liana

Liana snapped off one, then two last shots to try and support Vakari - then dove under the earth. She wouldn’t have time to do it once Reah turned to her. So she had to reposition while she had the chance, get to another angle and maybe take Reah by surprise doing so. Provided she didn’t just melt all the rock in her general vicinity anyway.

Team 1

Raeh's feet dug into the ground midway between herself and Vakari and she started skidding. As the last shot left his gun, her fist shot forwards. A cone of flame erupted in front of her, turning his attack into nothing more than slag and turning the dust kicked up by her skid to smoke.

But rather than flying out of the smoke to finish him off while his weapons cooled down, Raeh held her ground. "It's a training exercise, but you're shooting like it's real, shooting to kill." she said. A gust of wind blew the smoke away, revealing Raeh standing there with fresh blood dripping from her temple.

Team 1 - Vakari Delthera

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

Vakari just stands there for a moment, guns still pointed at the Raeh Alettor. Almost frozen, breaths swift and shallow.

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

The change starts in his eyes. The clouds seem to clear as the song of war stops ringing through his ears. Absolute focus fades to confusion.

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

His weapons are banished again to the in-between as the tension in his face and limbs slackens.

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

Team 1 not only needs to be prepared for anything, they will be prepared for anything.

"...on an expedition, we could encounter anything. We wouldn't have any fortifications but what we could construct on the spot, we wouldn't have any resources but what we brought with us or scavenged. At any moment, we could be attacked by who-knows-how-many dragons, and we wouldn't have any support."

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

"...anybody lost couldn't be replaced. We'd need to all be able to survive an attack." A gun unfolds into his hand, held by the barrel. He looks down at it. "I can't protect my allies other than by killing our enemies."

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

"Guns just kill. And to misdirect your aim in training is to lose your aim in a fight. I can't- I can't let that happen. I can't fail everybody like that.
Because then everybody dies."

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

His breathing is deep, but only barely slowed from earlier. He is winding down, but not relaxed.

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

"...nineteen years ago. What did you see?
...would we be able to make it?"

Tha-thump. Tha-thump. Tha-thump.

Team 1

Raeh walked towards Vakari. "I wasn't criticizing, I'm impressed." she said, "And you're exactly right, if you're out there fighting for your life, you can't afford to hesitate."

As the distance between them got shorter, Raeh twisted her limiter, turning it off. "You were sloppy today, but if I were a dragon I'd be dead."

She stopped just far enough away that she'd be able to react if Vakari attacked again. "But you're wrong about one thing," Her fist flew through the air and she suddenly closed the rest of the gap. It stopped just shy of Vakari's nose, and a powerful gust of wind flew past him.

She drew herself back up to her full height, which put her about eye level with Vakari, and her tone dropped to just above a whisper. "Your job isn't to protect anyone, it's their job to protect you, die for you if they have to." She walked past him, stopping briefly as she came alongside, "If you can come to terms with that, you won't just make it, Vakari, you'll win." And then she walked away.

Beneath them, Liana's finger hesitated on the trigger. Her lungs were at their limit, but she refused to let them give in. Sound was muffled for her, and she didn't want to accept it. But if she'd heard right, she absolutely couldn't let Raeh know that.

Team 1 - Vakari Delthera

Vakari stared into the distance as footsteps grew ever more distant behind him. The wind had not quite settled.

She had done that... with her limiter off.

He took a breath. It was shaky - he was shaky.

Fuck.

His fingers briefly fumbled for his own limiter as he looked around. Maur was on the sidelines, Smith was unconscious over there, Trout still collapsed with the rubble...
...

"...Dioren, at ease, and good work." His voice was a far cry from its typical confidence, and from the urgent directness it held during the fight. It was quiet and uncertain.

Team 1 - Meredith Maur

"Are we alive yet?" Meredith yelled from her place on the ground. "The dirt is grinding into my uniform and I'd rather ruminate on what just happened somewhere there's food."

Team 1 - Vakari Delthera

"Assessment's concluded!" Vakari yelled back to Meredith. "Go wake Trout, I'll get Smith!" So it was said, and so it was done.

Team 1 - Tyline

First, it was sound. Something muffled, unrecognizable, his brain working too slow to categorize it.
Second, it was touch. Most notably a solid curved stick grasped in his hands. His bow perhaps? In addition, something strange underneath his hands, cool, soft, texture felt familiar.
Third, he finally cracked his eyes open and stared up at the blue sky. Confusion. Where was the fist? The First Elite? The constant gunfire that dominated his ears? Why does he feel so tired suddenly?

He raises his right leg, sluggish and with a weight to it. He stepped forward, but felt no sensation of walking.
Panic.
Why isn't he walking? Did something happen to his body? Why is his face so close to the grass?
It takes some time to realize that he is currently lying on his back. Did he get punched and knocked down? Why wasn't he feeling the usual pain then? Answers elude him, unaware that he fainted before he could actually be punched by the First Elite.

All in all, he felt weak and tired. Terrible and light headed, so he continues to lie down with no attempts at getting up.

Team 1 - Meredith Maur

Meredith popped up off the ground, hurriedly brushing the dirt off her chest. "Finally," she said, as if they hadn't been flattened in the span of a minute or so. She looked around in place before her eyes landed on Tyline flopping about. The warrior marched toward him and knelt down, grabbing his hand and starting to haul her fallen comrade upward. "Come on, Trout, you look like your name right now."

Tyline let himself be pulled up onto his wobbly legs from his comfortable position on the ground.
"Damn, this sucks alot."

Team 1 - Liana

Liana tried to hold longer. Mostly out of spite. But she did come up, she wasn't looking to drown in rock. She emerged a short way away from where she'd been holding with her gun - enough to plausibly deny she'd heard all that if she had to.

"...I had a good shot on her there. Just want to point that out." she said between deep gasps.
