The Hunt

The Bird of Fire (Xephira, the name echoed to you) circled far overhead, corona of fire trailing behind it. Your Solar powers were not so dissimilar to that of Fire, for it is in both of your natures to control heat. In a direct contest, you doubt your Sun granted abilities would harm Xephira much. It would do well for you to avoid her fire, however.

A touch of her flames might set you into an uncontrollable blaze.

For all that she is indeed worthy prey to pursue. Xephira has burned thousands and feasted in the smoking ruins of cities and gods.

Just catching her is your problem, now. You admit your current canine form is not well suited to catching a giant bird,  and Xephira is unlikely to come to ground for a fair fight. You could attack her while she roosts, but fighting in her chosen grounds present their own dangers.

What do you decide?

A. Attack while she is distracted with prey of her own.

B. Track her back to her mountainous roost. Xephira will be unlikely to be willing to abandon her home.

C. Something else? You could transform into a bird of prey and attempt to take her down in the air, for example.

D. Perhaps a different target would be better at this time

B, but let’s spend time casing the location and planning an ambush/trap. Sure, it may be her territory, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make our own preparations.

I'm thinking about putting together a trap (perhaps we can lure her down into the ice somehow?) and baiting her into it rather than trying to track a bird up a mountainside or fighting a flaming bird in midair.

The mountain towers overhead, scraping the vault of the sky with its soaring peak. It is lord over the rest of the mountain range, and you track through dozens of ancient ruins, echoes of ancient sorcery and gods drifting in your wake.

The mountain yields under your steps, bounding from one rock to another, air growing thinner and thinner. You can feel magma pulsing underneath your paws.

The mountain is alive, you realize. It possesses a slumbering power inside. Perhaps Xephira was birthed of this very place.

Nonetheless, you make it to the very top, where the stone is as smooth as glass. A deep soup of clouds stretch as far as you can see, with only ancient snow-clad peaks emerging into the light of the sun. And far in the distance, an ember of Fire returning home.

You decide to prepare a trap to even the odds. It would be more suited for an artifact of some kind, but:

A. The Arena: Fashion a trap that will place Xephira and you in an enclosed arena, to fight in glorious conflict. Will last till one of you are dead or defeated, but the longer the fight goes on the easier it is to escape. Takes 2 Power to make.

B. A Snare: Shaped of a fine golden rope, it will tie down Xephira for at least a short time. Takes 1 Power to fashion.

C.  Explosion. Form a device that will expode when the bird of fire lands, burying her under shrapnel and solar fire. Takes 1 Power to fashion.

D. Something else?

They're a bird, mobility is their greatest strength. We only need them restrained long enough for us to pounce.

Everybody knows what happens after a dog successfully pounces on a bird.

The bird sets the dog on fire with its flamethrower breath?

Not if its throat has already been torn out!
