The gift of song had been bestowed upon the Ogres, wonderful! If the other monster prove themselves as artistically inclined as the Ogres, then perhaps his work won't be as rough as Ashuri-Zagos originally feared! Though that's a task for another time.

Ashuri-Zagos fully dedicates his time and resources to furthering his infrastructure project! It wouldn't due to cut corners or suffer any error in this important endeavor. Prosperous civilizations need constant nurturing, but the rewards, both for the kingdom and himself as bringer of said prosperity, are worth the effort.

.... You've doomed us all. Granted. Everyone except for traps are executed. Random sci-fi nonsense is required to be taught in schools.

Nevermore

"Thanks Jotul for all the help, I will do everything within my power to support the dragonkind forces. Tell me is there any military action that will be happening in the near future, because I will like to show my assistance to any efforts there. As well I will make sure that the Dragon King see my magical power in full effect, and we accept me as honorary dragonkind. Should I come to his lair with my creations, or allow him to fly to Dragon's Spine to see the fruit of labor?"

Nevermore will use all its magical and academical power to create or begin the process of creating the largest fortress/citadel made of bones and the like right near the dragon boneyard possible for Nevermore's magical abilities, having rest areas for dragons, storage facilities for the undead, and complicated areas in the lower floors that have laboratories and research areas for complicated necromantic studies. It will eventually be decorated with giant bones and skulls. Call it Bone's Keep currently

Turn 2 - Year 1 of the Zethean Calendar: End of the First Month

ZETHE

Players: Eversor, Ashuri-Zagos, and Azarian.

Spoiler: Known Regions (click to show/hide)

Eversor the Animated Armor

Opportunity: Force Re-organization
Eversor has just a lost a dependable core of elite troops, and the Forlorn Knights seem to be a viable replacement.

Eversor will take the Forlorn Undead Knights to replace the Forgotten Guards, while also dismissing his Beast Battalion in favor of the Elder Survivors. With his new warriors, he'd swiftly put them into training to acclimatize with their strength. While for his already proven Skeletal Soldiers and the experienced Knights it'd be merely a formality—for the Survivors it'd be far harsher, as the Sword of Zethe will not accept a lack of discipline within his army.

Eversor didn't care if they continued their solitary lifestyle off-duty, but while they're under his banner, they're to be akin to reliable weapons with which Zethe will strike down its foes.

After careful considerations, you decided to first recruit the elite Forlorn Undead Knights to replace the Forgotten Guards, and then dismiss the 1st Undead Beasts Battalion in order to add the Elder Undead Survivors to your ranks. The Undead Beasts Battalion didn't truly disappear, however. They were recruited by a lesser commander in order to support various security forces.

Spoiler: New Squads (click to show/hide)

Quote from: Eversor's Forces
Command Slots: 3/3 [No Morale Penalty]
- Eversor's 1st Skeletal Soldiers Battalion (1CP)
- Eversor's Elder Undead Survivors Squad (1CP)
- Eversor's Forlorn Undead Knights Squad (1CP)

Training (Mission): Enforce Discipline[/u]
Difficulty: a Moderate Task
Attribute Used: Leadership (1)
Traits Used: Ancient Undead Warrior (+2)
Roll [2d6]: [8] + 4

[8: Milestone reached]

Eversor was renowned for his military successes and unmatched might, and his forces were known to be the best among all undead corps. Such fame was not built on shaky foundations and the new recruits would soon learn what it meant to become part of the Sword of Zethe. As an undead, Eversor put his troops under a training that would kill the living, and would make the undead wish they were dead.

With what few days and weeks were left to prepare the recruits, Eversor managed to shape his forces to now acceptable levels of discipline. To his surprise, none of the survivors had quit. Maybe they were deserving of their names in the end.

The Elder Undead Survivors lost the Undisciplined trait

Quote from: Eversor's Forces
Command Slots: 3/3 [No Morale Penalty]
- Eversor's 1st Skeletal Soldiers Battalion (1CP)
- Eversor's Elder Undead Survivors Squad (1CP)
- Eversor's Forlorn Undead Knights Squad (1CP)

Azarian the Thoughbeast

Quote from: Current Location
---Ergant Forests---
Savagery: High
Magic: Moderate
Dominant Group: Basilisks competing with Devourer Worms
Resources:
- Food
- Mana-rich Water
- Low Quality Wood
-"Fruits of Life" (Rumor)
-"Spring of healing water" (Rumor)
-"Silver Amber" (Rumor)
Special Location:
-None known

Expedition (Mission): Exploration and Scouting of the Ergant Forest (Distance 1)
Azarian felt they were off to a good start with his reconnaissance, and begins to establish a encampment for the future with the help of the ogre squad while working with his scouts to map out and record the findings relative to the location of said camp.
With some fortune, they would have the location fully scouted within a month and any rumors confirmed or dispelled upon their return.

Opportunity: A potential grain deal? (continued)
On a clear day like any other, a young Harpy came to you in a hurry. It was not usual to see her barging like this, as she was the one responsible for communications among the squad. She brought with her concerning news: half of the squad were unable to continue their duties because of a case of devastating stomachache.

You asked her the names of the afflicted: all of them had consumed the new grain this morning. Now that you thought about it, some Ogres had a particularly smelly flatulence today, but they didn't seem too bothered by it.

Harpy Reconnaissance Squad bonus lost for this turn

Construction: Forward Operation Camp
Difficulty: a Moderate Task
Attribute Used: Intelligence (3) and Leadership (1)
Traits Used: None
Troops Bonus: +1 (Ogres Squad)
Roll [5d6]: [15] + 1

[8: Milestone reached]
[16: Bonus Milestone reached]
Bonus Luck Roll: [5] -Very Good-

Azarian chose a camp location with access to water and in an easy to defend slightly uphill place. The surrounding vegetation allowed you to remain hidden from sight. The Parabes Mountain Ogre squad adapted quickly to this new biome, managing to use their knowledge of the mountains to get a good feel of the rock and soil of the place. Their acquired expertise allowed you to find a place with very good foundations. In the future this place may be further fortified.

A crude wooden fort was erected in a few days, a most impressive feat considering your small numbers. Construction of the camp went unhindered, you managed to evade the attention of the potentially dangerous groups of the place.

During the camp construction, an excited Ogre came to the Thoughtbeast to tell them about the rumored "silver amber".

That day, an Ogre came to you with piece of bark arranged into a crude bowl inside of which a thick silvery liquid rested.
"The silver amber boss! Ain't amber, t'is sap!"

A Crude Wooden Fort has been built in the Ergant Forest. Its excellent foundations may allow it to be further reinforced later on.
Rumor dispelled: Silver Amber => Silver Sap

Dispelling Rumors
Difficulty: a Slightly Easy Task
Attribute Used: Intelligence (3)
Traits Used: None
Troops Bonus: +2
Roll [4d6]: [17] + 2

[8: Milestone reached]
[16: Bonus Milestone reached]
Bonus Luck Roll: [4] -Good-

Azarian squared up the remaining points to elucidate for a full report to be considered complete, and isolated the locations were it was most likely for the rumors to have originated. Sending its able troops to these various places, they managed to get a complete mapping of the place in the remaining time, as well as confirm the veracity of the rumors.

Fruits of Life:
There were no Fruits of Life in the sense of some fruits with incredible healing powers. The rumor originated from a rare carnivorous plant monster found in the Ergant Forest who used a very tasty fruit to lure preys. It seemed this monster was invasive, and not native to this place.

Healing Water and Silver Amber:
These two rumors were in fact intertwinned.
Firstly silver amber was in fact the sap coming from a willow from the Ergant Forest, which turned silver when it grew near the mana-rich water.
Secondly this silver sap had healing properties, and there existed a spring where an entire grove of these trees grew. Unfortunately the place was currently controlled by the Basilisks, who made use of this potent boon.

They managed to learn something about the Dominant Groups.
- Devourer Worms: their bodies had incredible regenerative properties, allowing them to survive lethal injuries. For some reason, they were utterly unable to swim and were terrified of water.

- Basilisks: the strongest of them could use magic. One of them was seen manipulating water.

Ashuri-Zagos

Ongoing Project (Mission): All roads lead to Tartarus
The gift of song had been bestowed upon the Ogres, wonderful! If the other monster prove themselves as artistically inclined as the Ogres, then perhaps his work won't be as rough as Ashuri-Zagos originally feared! Though that's a task for another time.

Ashuri-Zagos fully dedicates his time and resources to furthering his infrastructure project! It wouldn't due to cut corners or suffer any error in this important endeavor. Bonus: Inspired Workers (+1)
Project Progress: 13/20 (Phase 1)
Next Milestone: 20
Roll [4d6]: [18] + 1

20: First Milestone reached. Phase 1 completed.

Over the remaining month, Ashuri-Zagos continued focusing all of his efforts and manpower into the great road network project. The god's echo reminisced about the glorious past of gilded cities and marble paved roads, at times lamenting the disappearance of unique techniques and marvels. Yet to know that they started from scratch yet again, with only his hands and a bit of clay kept the furnace in his heart burning.

But he was not alone. The monstrous denizens of Zethe had in themselves a fire that would put the great kingdoms of the past to shame. And although they lacked skills and expertise, they bore many dormant talents and powers waiting to be put to greater use. Slowly and surely, Ashuri-Zagos vision was taking shape.

At the end of the month the first phase of the project was over. A network of dirt roads had been established all over Zethe, and in-progress highways would soon connect the core region to the adjacent ones. It all looked crude and uneven, jagged even, still a far-cry from the marble roads of yore.

And yet, such pride upon gazing at this nascent work...

A dirt road network now connects all the places within Tartarus.
Monsters from surrounding regions are converging toward the capital, life and trade increase as monsters become more connected.

Magical Project: Nevermore's Citadel, Bone's Keep
Difficulty: a Very Hard Task
Attribute Used: Magic (4) and Intelligence (1)
Roll [6d6]: [28]

20: First Milestone reached. Phase 1 completed.

Nevermore looked at the great graveyard and the dormant dragon bones. So many wasted materials that could become so much more. A vision came to him like in a dream, that of a white citadel of bones and ivory piercing the skies, as testament of his unmatched power. If he could make this vision come true, then for sure the Dragonking would be impressed. How couldn't they?

So Nevermore set out to work, digging his memory for ancient spells and magical theories, and studying the properties of the bones. In the past, it wasn't unusual for a master necromancer to build itself an abode of some sort using its cohort of enslaved undead. But he had heard of other more unorthodox methods, used only by the greatest and most ambitious masters of their craft. Which of course, he was, although he never attempted himself this: to raise an entire fortress made of bones with a single ritual.

With the dedication of a crazed genius, Nevermore prepared the graveyard for the ritual, imbuing the bones with magic and carving into the place a magical array of ambitious magnitude. Time passed in a blink, and already it was the end of the month. He had managed to complete a prototype of the array, which will useable was unstable and unlikely to achieve the ideal desired result. As a test, Nevermore had managed to raise a small mansion made of bones to serve as temporary lodgings.

More time was needed.

It that Oozes

I said it via PM, but I'll say it here too. Credit where its due, evidently this really was still a thing... Though turning a weekend delay into a half year delay may have negatively impacted the interest of some of the players.
Half a year turned into one month, hopefully we go weekly soon!

It that Oozes
It that Oozes itself would not participate in any strenuous physical activities for a while. It elected to spend some time replenishing its mass via regular eating and taking the mitosis process slowly. This was a process that simply should not be rushed as even a regular slime could have defects if it reproduces too recklessly. It that Oozes wanted to err on the side of caution.

It that Oozes would continue to monitor the Protoslime Commanders. It quickly became apparent that it would not be practical to engage in Mitosis every time it wanted to expand to a new region. For now, there was little that could be done to improve upon them aside from providing nutritional assistance to the most promising candidates.

Despite the Protoslime Commander not yet being qualified for middle-management, It that Oozes had the assets it needed in order to perform basic scouting jobs!

---Unknown potentially forested region expedition---
1 Slime Squad would be split off from the Slime Legion in order to create an expeditionary force. It would be accompanied by the Slime Relay Squad. The Slime Relay squad would arrange themselves to form a few "Lines" leading from the Swamp to the "Unknown potentially forested region" in order to make it possible to retain cohesion even outside of the swamp. The expeditionary force was deliberately kept small because without a middle-manager all orders would need to come from It that Oozes; who would manually communicate with the expeditionary forces.

The slime squad would remain close to the relay slimes, and identify potential food sources, dangers, places of interest, and generally do what scouts should do.

Mitosis (Continued):
Difficulty: a Hard Task
Attribute Used: Strength (1)
Trait Used: None
Current Progress: 7
Roll [2d6]: [6]

12: Milestone reached

With enough time and energy, It that Oozes successfully divided into two perfect copies of itself. At the instant of division, the Two that Ooze were one and the same as a mind. The Two that Ooze acknowledged themselves, and felt a great step forward had been made for the Hivemind.

But the birth of a second Major Node was not without consequence on the collective psyche of the Hivemind. The Two that Ooze instinctively felt that the will of the Hivemind had effectively become more diluted. It wasn't a problem for now, as the Two that Ooze were still one and the same.

Opportunity: Force Re-organization

You decided to split off a Squad from the Slime Legion, causing much mechanical change to your sheet.
Slime Legion split into 2 Slime Regiments.
2nd Slime Regiment split into 2 Slime Battalions.
2nd Slime Battalion split into 2 Slime Squads.
The 2nd Slime Squad was sent away with the Slime Relay Squad on a Mission.

Milestone not yet reached [4]

Onward! The slimes went toward unknown pastures, eager to discover and learn about the outside of their swamp. Connected to the distant slimes through the stretched relay squad, It that Oozes could personally direct the operations.

It was a forested place with lower humidity than the swamp. Edible vegetal matter could be found everywhere, and there were a lot of trees too. It was the first time It that Oozes truly experienced the outside, and they didn't really know what to look out for. The experience was nonetheless magical, albeit fruitless.

Aeon the Phantom Beast

NECROMANCY
Take the dead palms and carve it into a staff fit for destruction, empowering it with magical power. Then slam the reinforced staff against the barrier with my strength.

Mission: Breaking the Seal
Difficulty: a Moderate Task
Attribute Used: Magic (2)
Trait Used: Sealed One (+1)
Roll [3d6]: [11] + 1

12: Milestone reached

Aeon took the dead palms that didn't crumble into dust, and fashioned a staff out of them. Imbuing into the weapon the magical might of the Concepts, he slammed the barrier with all his might. With a resounding bang the staff shattered and a cloud of sand raised, but the barrier remained intact.

No matter. Aeon had been sealed before by a greater seal, this one would fail in due time. Seals were merely complex locks, and in time one could pick them.

The glaring sun completed its course many times, leaving the celestial watchers and the Night Star to illuminate the night sky. The world may have changed, some things hadn't as the sky attested. And finally after a tireless study of the seal, Aeon found a way to shatter it. It would seem the New World Magic behind this seal used the Day Star and the Night Star as a power sources, causing it to weaken during the sole instant of twilight where the two stars switched places. Timing was important for the seal breaking to succeed though.

And so finally one day, Aeon shattered the seal. As the Night Star rose, the invisible barrier turned into sand and vanished, causing the surrounding sands to pour into the now open hole.

The Seal has been broken

Ha! That turn was supposed to come out of the oven much, much earlier, and I had planned to make some sort of official apology after posting the next turn in the same week. You know how the story goes.

So here it is.

Thank you for enduring my unannounced hiatus, I will make an effort to post something here if I think a turn delay will arrive. And especially if I expect a hiatus to occur!

Thank you again for bearing with me, hopefully the updates become increasingly more frequent.

Azarian was satisfied with the information garnered and the foothold established, yet worried by the illness from the unusual grain ration. He passes what he learned on to the king of Zethe, and warns the grain farmer of his unfortunate findings. The ogres and occuli seemed okay with it, but there were definitely some races that could not safely stomach the grain and he would adjust who got what rations accordingly.
Azarian then allows his troops a month to recover while he returned to the forests and tried to parley with the basilisks and the Devourer worms. Worst came to worst, he would take some unwilling recruits from each group and gain a better understanding of their capabilities.

Eversor

Satisfied with the performance of his soldiers after the grueling training, Eversor, with the help of one of the many messenger harpies, sends a missive to Azarian.

My fellow Lord of Zethe,

My warriors are ready for another campaign to spread Zethe's borders. If you require reinforcements, I will gladly march to aid you in the woodlands of Ergant.

Should Azarian accept, Eversor and his troops will move towards the Ergant Forest to help the Thoughtbeast in taking control of the region. If not, the wastelands would be his target instead.

It that Oozes
It that oozes considered the situation. It had the foresight to identify which 'It that Oozes' was the original one so there wasn't a question on who was in charge. It had not however, expected the split to be as perfect as it was. While undoubtedly a great boon, it also came with a few additional challenges.

It that Oozes did not have any solid memories of having a slime that it could regard as an equal before. While the new one was slightly lower on the slime hierarchy, it was important to treat it in a manner that It that Oozes itself would be willing to put up with. At this particular moment, this would easy to the point where it wouldn't even require a project; on account of the fact that they were in a hivemind and completely identical. It was quickly decided that this discussion should take place now and a few guidelines were formed:

- All reasonable measures should be taken to ensure the continued survival of all iterations of It that Oozes.
- The highest descision-making authority should belong to the oldest It that Oozes, except in the case where they are under obvious mental impairment; in which case the next oldest should make the decision provided it is in a state of lesser obvious mental impairment.
- Independent decision-making is permitted for all iterations of It that Oozes; especially for minor things. Communication should be maintained between all iterations whenever practical to ensure that they are on the same page.
- Agreements made between different iterations of It that Oozes should be maintained when possible. In the event of failure to uphold an agreement for whatever reason, the other iterations of It that Oozes should be informed as soon as possible.
- Becoming different from eachother is permitted.
- Changes to 'government style' and leadership may be negotiated in the event of significant disagreements in the future.
- In the event that an iteration of It that Oozes wants to separate from the hivemind, they are to notify the others a season or so in advance prior to leaving; which is permitted.

While eventually having multiple It that Oozes may eventually lead to the rulership of the original one being contested, having only a single major node was perhaps a much larger vulnerability.

---New task: Learning to live with twoself---
While having two copies of itself would theoretically allow for a whopping 18 command slots, this would require the ability to co-ordinate; lest the psionic channels get crossed in unexpected ways. The purpose of this project is to become accustomed to commanding forces with a second Major Node involved, learning the complications that may arise from it and how to deal with them. The way that it would begin to do that... Would be to play games with itself! These games would be of a non-violent nature, where large groups of slimes would do things like perform tricks and play some manner of slime-sports in the swamps.

---Unknown potentially forested region expedition---
The expedition would continue the scouting mission. While it wasn't yet able to master the new territory, a few things of note were still learned. As there have been no significant casualties, it is most likely that the territory is safe enough for slime occupation. Through the hivemind, It that Oozes would be able to instantly identify how hungry the expeditionary force was. If it had been eating well, then that probably meant that the territory had enough food to sustain a Battalion worth of slimes, as two squads were currently present there. If they had not been eating enough... Then they would be recalled after this phase of the scouting job.

Turn 2.1 - Opportunities

Eversor

[Opportunity: Warriors Musings]

During the training sessions, the Elder Survivors got to interact with the Forlorn Knights, and the Skeletal Soldiers. Although weaker, the Skeletal Soldiers were senior members of the Sword of Zethe, and their loyalty to the Kingdom was unmatched. The Forlorn Knights and the Elder Survivors, in their might and experience commended much respect, and still acknowledged the veterancy and bravery of the Skeletal Soldiers who themselves very much respected the newcomers.

On one uneventful day of intensive training, some idle chatting turned into a question that occupied the minds of your entire forces. Wherein lies a warrior's true value?

Your Skeletal Soldiers believe that loyalty and dedication to the cause are the greatest values of the Sword of Zethe. That this fire is one that will make them greater as undead, and soldiers.

The Forlorn Undead Knights agree for the most part, but some of them knew betrayal and weak leaders during past experiences. They think that a true warrior should respect their leader, but ultimately stick to their beliefs.

The Elder Survivors, on the other hand, believe that might should beckon respect. A weak leader should not be followed.

The answer you will provide to this question will surely affect the social hierarchy among your forces.

Azarian

[Opportunity: Whispering Waters]

On one cloudy night, you were meditating in your completed fortified encampment close to the brook. You heard a mental whisper coming from the water, fainter than a lone star in a darkened sky. Focusing a little bit you spotted a wounded Undine, an elemental spirit of water. Despite the magical density of the water, the elemental was dying and about to dissolve into the stream.

Ashuri-Zagos
[Opportunity: Suggested Asssitance]

Day in day out, you oversaw the progress of the road network in all its aspects. Meetings about material allocation, organization of the workforce, logistics of the entire project, and more... A normal individual would have collapsed under the workload, but to you it was merely a small homework.

In their worry and desire to further the grandiose project, some Zethean officials suggested you recruit some aides. Indeed some help could increase the speed and quality of the work, but only if said aides had in them the talents to manage plentiful matters and keep up with your drive.

To study applications and train your aides would take some time, and you weren't sure it would succeed. Was it worth a try?

Nevermore
[Opportunity: Secrets Carved in Bones]

At some point, you came across an unusual dragon's skull. Massive compared to the lesser dragons skulls, it was equal in size to that of Jotul. From what you had observed, it was most likely proof that this skull belonged to a dragon of the higher castes. But something felt off about it, where was the rest of the skeleton? No matter how hard you tried to search that day, you couldn't find anything.

Maybe Jotul knew something. Or maybe you should keep it to yourself and keep studying?

It that Oozes
[Opportunity: A Call from the Hivemind]

It happened shortly after you split into two. You heard a call in the Hivemind that you hadn't heard since you had differentiated into a Major Node. It was soft and warm, so reassuring you wanted to be cuddled by this serene voice.

It came from the Breeding Pool, deep inside of it, where not even you knew what lain in there.

Aeon
[Opportunity: A Broken Seal]
Enter.

You descended the spiral slope toward the dark bowels of the desert. The falling streams of sand all around you seemed to be talking, admonishing you for your action. You ignored them and continued further, until you saw something at the bottom of the pit.

A platform surrounded by a ring of shifting sands that seemed to absorb all of the falling sands. Upon this platform was a single leafless ebon tree, its dried trunk having a strange luster, and its spiky branches forming a fourteen fingered hand trying to grab something in the sky. You heard a long, ancient sigh of relief echoing in the pit caused by a strange and dry wind coming from the depths of the pit.

The atmosphere was so dry you couldn't sense any moisture down there. You stopped before the tree. So that was the so-called sealed evil spirit of carnage the old Djinn told you about. The tree crackled as if bones were being crushed between mighty jaws. Uprooting itself slowly as if stretching, it spoke to you in a reverberating voice.

"Ah... Free at last. You have my thanks, stranger."

The dry air is heavy with power and resentment. The first spark will cause all this welling up tension to explode and turn into a violent fight. Will it come from you? Or the spirit?

Eversor

Musing about it, Eversor thought that every one of his warriors was right in some way.

He had idolized strength, and strived to personify it—the animated armor continues unliving according to the Law of the Strong. However, it does completely not define him anymore. When it comes to might, King Radeus is weaker than him, but Eversor had still decided to serve the ruler of Zethe after seeing his vision for the future of monsterkind. And in that vision, sheer power would lose part of its importance for monsters. A being like himself, capable of only destruction, will certainly no longer be needed once it comes into fruition and Eversor has accepted that.

But, even if he has dedicated himself to serve as King Radeus' sword, he cannot truly say his loyalty is completely pure—in the first place, what drove him to seek Radeus out was the desire to battle. While he didn't come to blows with the King and instead became one of the Zethean Lords, Radeus' vision isn't his only motivation, as Zethe's ambition will undoubtedly create conflict. Conflict in which Eversor revels.

And, indeed, respecting one's lord is only natural and personal beliefs are important to keep. But a truly charismatic leader would be able to shift and change these seemingly unshakable convictions, just as Radeus caused Eversor's own to adapt.

These thoughts would be his answer, he supposed. It's not much of an answer... undoubtedly, to some it would create more questions—but thinking and philosophy was never Eversor's strong suit.
