Alright you animals, here it is. You've gone and got me to make a thread. I'll flesh out this post more later.

Since you wanted definitions, here are some:

Socialism is not when the government does things. Socialism is when workers control the means of production. That's it. It's one sentence. Anarchists are socialists. Marxists, Leninists, and Maoists are socialists. Parliamentary socialists are socialists, but don't tell anybody I told you that because they'll call me a liberal.

Liberalism is not socialism. Liberalism is the ideology of capitalism. Social democracy is not socialism. Social democracy is the use of state structures to blunt the impacts of capitalism. Conservatism is, ironically enough, usually just the right-wing of liberalism as they agree with liberals on the fundamental issue of capitalism. If you read anything about social democrats from before 1970 or so they might actually be socialists, because the term drifted over time.

Fascism is pure evil as a political ideology. It might also be liberalism, depending on who's asking.

Also, the world is ending. That's what this thread is about, more or less. It might be ending symbolically as we break free of capitalism, but personally I suspect it's just ending literally and we're all going to die. The circle of time spins faster and ever flatter here, in the heart of darkness, the USA. Once, I made a very frivolous and amazing thread about the DPRK, but I should have been making it about the US. So complain about your boss in this thread or whatever. Or ask questions. Or talk about theory, if you're really determined to torture yourself.

aaaaaand don't get the thread locked or you're getting re-educated. Toady doesn't seem to care if we say eat the rich but these things have a way of happening. I was going to start a list of relevant posts here, but unfortunately the forum software is still super-fucked and doesn't actually lead to where posts are in most threads.

You could almost say it's some kind of thread about the impending doom.

*Raises Hand*
Should we also talk about climate change and how the amazon is on fire and stuff like that? Is that relevant? Or only the mumble mumble means of production?

Yes, that's included. Hence the "Crisis" part of the thread. Besides, capitalism makes ecological collapse inevitable.

Frankly, there's hardly a material topic out there that doesn't come back to capitalism, it's all pretty relevant.

Has humanity decided on a circle of hell yet or are we leaving that up to Satan? Do we at least get direct democracy for this one thing?

Also, on a more serious note, are we going to make a reading list in here? There's lots of socialist material to work from.

That is a good idea, however, the forum layout is still not good for doing it. With no threadmarks and no accurate links to other parts of the forum, there's not much to be done about that. There are plenty of good reading lists out there though, but it wouldn't be based in things people here have actually read.

Shouldn't PTW, but here I am.

I've been telling practically everyone I know that we should be rioting *right fucking now* since like 2007.  Frankly, I think it's too late.

Like a community game, you could make a spoiler full of quotes as people give recommendations. I'd be willing to take that on in my useless PTW post earlier, if it's too much of a hassle.

As recommended reading - Polybius warned of the anacyclosis in The Histories (Book 6) while making an argument for balanced government and mixed constitutions. I have found this eternally comforting as I see the US swing its power around and fuck itself out of balance over and over. Not directly related to economics, though.

Could also just make a link to an external document.

Social democracy is not socialism. Social democracy is the use of state structures to blunt the impacts of capitalism.

This is still wrong and liberalist propaganda. It ignores the context and history of socialist democrats as well as their goals and aims, and the ideology and thoughts of it's ideologues. It's literally just a turned-from-the-world liberal scholar's baseless and unfounded assertion made in order to disqualify the few functional socialist states we've had from counting as socialist.

Any discussion of socialism under these conditions is going to be pointless as you've already yielded the language and terms of the discussion to liberalism.
