Realistic application of mass-related physics on creature materials. Giants and organic megabeasts/titans/forgotten beasts collapse under their own weight. In fact, pretty much all giant animals are unable to function since they maintain the proportions of their natural counterparts. Bronze colossi can stand in place, but damage themselves every time they take a step.

I wonder if this is why dragons in DF don't fly or have wings. Almost every popular depiction of a winged dragon, given their proportions and probable mass, should by all rights be flightless but aren't because...magic I guess. Toady, visionary that he is, saw past this obvious cop-out answer and cried "If my dragons can't fly, then they can't fucking fly! Deal with it!"
