You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Actually, the first roll, for the radar, was a 2. Which might have produced results considering our experience with radars.

But then kot tied the vote just before Sensei rolled, so he had to reroll.

SUggeston for the next design phase.Rather than steal a desgn of them let´s make our own based on the missile we stoled earlier.

UF-NV-43 “Vampire”

The roguishness inherent in the Cannalan scum impulses them to attack at night, when they aren´t so prone to receive a Horsekiller round. If we want to win this war, we must (unfortunately) sink to the same depths.

The Vampire is a night visión system, which has ben developed as a natural evolution of our Piracy Warning sensors and casual inspiration by Cannalan´s night visión system. Stating fron decomplexified sensors (which would allow us to mass produce Piracy Warnings in the future) we have made a powerful night visión system, with a visible range equal to the detection range in the missiles, a reduced batery and integration with our developed optical sights, both in in infantry and vehicles. We have tried to develop a device that focusseson amplifying light to the mx, in order to reduce the use of the cumbersome IR lantern to particularly dark nights. We have wateproofed the evice, in order for it to better resist the high humiit of the jungle an perhaps a small time underwater as when crossing a river.

Battle Report 24: Spring 1943

New Equipment:

After Forenian infantry were instrumental in a narrow victory in the Tereshkova Desert, Forenia has decided to reinforce them with a new long-range weapon system: The UF-AMR-43 Horsekiller II. A successor to the old Moskurg Horsekiller rifle, this is an anti-materiel or long-range sniper rifle. The design has two major components, the first being an enormous semi-automatic rifle which fires enormous bullets (in a similar caliber but much more powerful than the antiquated Horsekiller .60 caliber cartridge), accurately and to a long distance, and the second is an improvement to the Eagle Sight scope, dubbed the Eagle Sight Mk III. Crucially, this makes Eagle Sights, both the large Mk III and the smaller Mk II which is still in use), inexpensive. The Forenians' revision action was spent on a secret project.

Cannala has gone to great lengths to take back the skies, spending their design and revision on a new missile, the M1934 Missile, Auto-Guided, Infrared Camera (MAGIC) Mk. III "Balefire". The Balefire, which the third generation of guided missiles made by Cannala, is easily the most advanced guided missile in the world. It uses an infrared seeking system based on proportional guidance: The missile's steering is based on the rate of change of the angle to the target, rather than the angle to the target directly, so if the the angle to the target does not change the missile flies straight. "Like Admiral Cortez Says: If you're moving towards another ship and the angle towards them doesn't change on the horizon, you're on a collision course!" is how this system is explained to common pilots, and it causes the missile to lead targets through a simple mechanical means which doesn't introduce more vaccuum tubes than an older missile. The revision is critical, though: The weight of the missile's guidance system (mainly the battery) was reduced and the rocket motor improved, with a new fuel compound and faster-burning geometry, the Balefire reaches supersonic speeds, covering a three mile range in a few short seconds. Cannalan engineers hope the Balefire will be effective against Forenian fighters.

The War This Turn:
This season, Cannala and Forenia are both attacking in the North and South lanes, the vying for control of the Tereshkova jungle and Titan. As soldiers are directed to resource-rich locations, an uneasy ceasefire is maintained on Forenia itself, where Cannala occupies a considerable portion of land.

The Battle at Sea
"How do you like it now?" Cortez spoke into his radio. Through his binoculars he watched Tereshkova's VV-Frightening dance through the clouds. This time, he had the upper hand. It still didn't stop her from taunting him, though. "You're still hiding on your ship! Too scared to to meet me?" He could hear a strain in her voice. She was dodging missile after missile, but it was clearly taking all of her effort. In the past, fighter pilots had little to fear from missiles, it was enough to not be flying dead straight when the missile got close, and they would miss. These new missiles needed a more drastic change in vector to reliably dodge, and what's more, they could show up from well outside of cannon range in just a few seconds. They still can't follow a Frightening or even a Lightning turning as hard as it can, but forget to pay attention for a few moments and there was pretty good odds they'd get close enough to set the proximity fuze off. If that happens, you'd best hope you're flying a Haast. Most of her wing was already shot down and she was just about out of cannon rounds, and she'd used the last of her flares a while ago (which, troublingly, was a trick that only worked half the time). "Trouble, witch?" Cortez was amusing himself by keeping an open radio with his airborne squad, and he could hear the "Beep beep beep beeeee-" of a missile locking on. Tereshkova lined herself up with a target and expended the last of her ammunition, setting some poor Spearhead pilot on fire. But then, a missile from the left! She tries to dive out of it, but too little too late, it detonates causing the left engine to sputter out and the left side control hydraulics to stop working. The plane was going down, so Tereshkova decided to steer over the sand dunes on the island named after her and eject over friendly territory. She admitted to herself, she was beaten. Still she couldn't give her bearded rival the satisfaction. She shouted into the radio, "I shot down half a dozen of your dogs, and it only cost one plane! You haven't seen the last of me!" and climbed out the canopy without listening for a reply.

Once again, Forenia's air transport is disrupted, Forenia isn't winning air combat consistently enough to protect their larger aircraft. The Balefire missile is fairly effective, having a very good chance of hitting a fighter which doesn't perform sharp evasive maneuvers, and it can hit bombers very reliably as well (the proximity fuze is usually disabled for this use to do as much damage as possible). Common radar and a weapon which grossly exceeds the range of Forenian fighters allow Cannla to dictate the terms of air combat, turning fights to their advantage despite having slower aircraft.

Cannala has an advantage at sea.

The Battle for the Tereshkova Jungle
Attacking: Both
It is the latter half of the wet season.

Forenia's new Horsekiller II rifle debuts here. It's not the perfect environment for a sniper rifle. The Osprey is far lighter and easier to shoot while having ample power for engagement ranges seen here (it does however benefit from the cheaper Eagle Sights). Fortunately, it is a multi-role weapon, and its second role as an anti-materiel rifle sees plenty of use here, where the Raider and its many derivatives are the bulk of Cannala's armored vehicles. Having only Light armor, it's penetrable by Horsekiller II rounds, which have most of the fun of autocannon rounds while being usable by a single man hiding in a bush. Compared to RPG's, even Forenia's aging AS-RPG-28A they're a lot less damaging on a hit, but they're easier to hit with and from a greater range, and they can usually get a few rounds out before needing to relocate too (but a typical soldier can't get though the excessive 8-round mag before Raider autocannons start pointing in their direction). A few AP rounds into a raider is pretty much guaranteed to hit something important, or at least most of the infantry it's carrying. The Horsekiller II quickly becomes Forenia's primary antitank weapon in this theater, with most squads having a dedicated "Horsekiller" who uses an AS-MC16A for infantry combat. A couple Moskurg soldiers even manage bayonet kills, although it should be remarked that they're really just going out of their way for bragging rights by trying to stab someone with a 21kg spear.

Cannala has some big advantages too, though. First, despite all the tales of Haasts surviving missile hits and returning to base with half a wing (total), two firing engine cylinders, and a Forenian flag lashed in place of a vertical stabilizer, the Haasts are not doing well. Haasts are slow and have always relied on fighter cover to be effective, and they're simply unequipped to dodge a Balefire missile in terms of speed and turn rate. Forenia's air support is lacking. The Firebrand mobile artillery guns are taking their toll on Forenian forces as well. Most of all, while it wasn't described in great detail last season, Cannala's cheap Aswang night vision systems have been used to devastating effect, as Cannala can make night raids against the Forenians without a numerical disadvantage. Attacking key Forenian positions in this way has been very effective.

Cannala gains ground. [Cannala 4/4, Forenia 0/4] Once again the initiative belongs to Cannala; if they attack the next battle will take place in the desert, the stakes of which could best be described as "all the marbles".

The Ceasefire in the Forenian Jungle
Attacking: Nobody

Two Forenians approach the The Crack under a white flag. The Crack was the hottest tavern in Occupied Forenia, which had come about from arguably-misappropriated funding for the Cannalan Refugee Asylum Center, or CRAC for short. Sergeant Gutierrez, in his opinion, had a pretty good deal going, running the bar and collecting soldiers' wages at the same time. Intelligence Officer Ramirez, who had hoped to actually meet some Forenians, idly dug his knife into his table while he ignored a repeat Forenian news broadcast on the radio and wondered what he would say if one of the higher-ups showed up. Then, the door opened. The murmuring of the patrons (all Cannalan) stopped immediately. Gutierrez nearly dropped the screwdriver cocktail he was mixing with stolen Forenian vodka. Ramirez accidentally cut his hand. The two Forenians, one Arstotzkan and one Moskurg, looked about the room cautiously. The Arstotzkan forced out a sentence in stilted Spanish: "We have come to go to Cannala. For asylum." "We are not spies." the Moskurger added. "We're Jewish." "Ah, alright." Ramirez spoke up first, then sucked his wound. "We'll see if we can get you a place with the next boat." Gutierrez went to him and whispered in his ear. "I can't believe we actually got some! I guess you'd better call command. Do you think we have to hide the drinks?" "Yeah. You'd probably better do that." Ramirez began speaking quickly into the radio, handling such an unusual situation would take a while. "We are not spies." said the Moskurg. The Arstotzkan kicked him.

The Battle for Titan
Attacking: Both

The Horsekiller II's full potential as a sniper rifle is demonstrated here. A good designated marksman can pick off a Cannalan soldier from a kilometer away. Between the Horsekiller and the wide availability of optical sights for common rifles, the Forenians have excellent infantry combat capability. With Cannala's shortage of optical sights to help rifle soldiers fight back, they usually can't even rely on forward spotters for Hornet missiles. Another source of trouble for Cannala is that the Horsekiller II can, in fact, bring a Bull tank to a grinding halt. If a Forenian sniper manages to sneak behind them or otherwise trick the Cannalan armored vehicle into exposing its rear, a single shot will promptly penetrate the light armor over the exhaust vent and destroy the turbine motor. Once the motor fails, the Bull's autoloader will become inoperable as well, forcing the crew to abandon their defenseless vehicle.

The Horsekiller does, however, suffer somewhat from being incredibly heavy. Though soldiers often refuse to admit it, squad leaders report having to slow down so that Horsekiller carriers can keep pace. Some "True Moskurgs" have attempted to carry a Horsekiller II and Tiger Armor into battle and found themselves utterly incapable of marching at a reasonable pace, and the combination doesn't work well since shooting from prone is impractical in the armor anyway.

What Forenian infantry can't fight, their Bjorn tanks and Salamanders do. The Salamander, on average, still has an advantage over the Raider- only because the Hornet missiles usually can't benefit from forward spotters. Fighting between APC's is usually fast and lethal nonetheless. Bjorn tanks are a fair match for the Cannalan Bull tanks, but with Cannalans TCHEAT rounds their survivability isn't perfect- they rely most of all on a valuable range advantage and infantry support to protect them from cheaper units. While Cannalans have access to the Hornet ATGM, Forenia lacks a truly effective antitank weapon for infantry to use against Cannalan main battle tanks (the Horsekiller II only half counts).

Cannala also has a definite advantage in the support area, their Vengeful Charlotte bombers can be adequately escorted by Spearhead fighters, and their Firebrand artillery is highly mobile with good firepower. As mentioned before, Forenia's air support is suffering, and with the exception of a great short-term fire rate from the Sarukh they don't have any real artillery advantages over the Cannalans.

Forenia ekes out a narrow victory, owing heavily to their infantry.

Forenia gains ground. [Cannala 2/4, Forenia 2/4]

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

US forces proceed into Italy to liberate Naples. Days later, time bombs set by retreating Germans kill a hundred refugees living in a post office there. The United States suffers serious air losses in operations over Germany owing partly to German deployment of Forenia's "Piracy Warning" guided missiles, which are so severe that Germany gains air superiority. The Cannalan government is heavily ridiculed for failing to share their missiles with the United States before the stolen technology was deployed by the Axis. At the Moscow Conference, the US, UK, Soviets and Nationalist Chinese sign the Declaration of Four Nations, promising that some form of international alliance would be establish between them at the conclusion of the current war. Also signed are delcarations recognizing that the fascist Italian government should be replaced by a new one, Germany's annexation of Austria should not be recognized, and Germans guilty of committing atrocities should be judged by the nations in which they committed their crimes, or by a joint council of allied nations. Four bombs are droppped on the Vatican, the aircraft responsible isn't identified. This is initially believed to have been done by the retreating Germans or Italian fascists, but later an American secretary states that he believes the bombs were dropped by a delinquent American. In Germany, Himmler orders that "Gypsies and part-Gypsies" be put on the same level as Jews and sent to concentration camps. British military transport HMT Rohna is sunk by a German radio-controlled bomb. A surprise Luftwaffe raid on Bari hits Allied ships carrying a secret cargo of mustard gas, releasing the gas on British soldiers. The Nationalist Revolutionary Movement orchestrates a coup in Bolivia, but steps down after the United States refuses to recognize their government as legitimate. Subhas Chandra Bose starts an independent government in India, seeking support from the Axis powers (mainly Japan) against British rule. Josip Tito declares a democratic government-in-exile for Yugoslavia.

Local Events:
German delegates (not Himmler himself, who "dislikes traveling to Forenia") have visited Parliament to praise Forenian engineers on the effectiveness of their Piracy Warning missile. "This pioneering new technology is a shining example of the Forenian creative spirit and ingenuity, and will serve as a proud example of your alliance with the Axis." This didn't get the expected applause from the ministers, and the Engineers' Balcony was full of sheepish glances. The delegation continued, nonetheless: "We would like you to provide us with a piece of specialized equipment that will help some of our spies sabotage a Soviet factory. It could be a weapon, or a tool for infiltration, anything the Soviets won't be expecting."

In Cannala, the Engineers have settled on a plan to deal with the out-of-control House of Brothers, after considerable debate. Diego Garcia, the majority leader, will have his mansion searched by Secret Police, who will find evidence of his collusion with the Forenian government for profit- even if they have to plant the evidence. [1d6:6] As luck would have it, no forged evidence is needed. After raiding his house while he is away, the Secret Police find correspondence pertaining to tax evasion, secret trade deals with Vlanlados, and even money from a bank robbery in the US. Apparently his company's "rum" was being made from illegally imported Vlanlados-grown sugar beets, that revelation alone should be enough to make sure that he never gets elected again even if he ever gets out of jail. Several of his supporters within the House of Brothers are implicated as well. With his elimination from the House of Brothers, the remaining Brothers are much more willing to follow El Presidente's guiding hand. "Now that we've got the El Presidente Emergency War Trade act passed," says Presidente Charpez, "we can send the allies some equipment. They have a special request as well, for some kind of spy gadget. I'll trust your judgement on what to send them."

This turn, you may send a weapon to the Allies.

Espionage Credit:
This turn, each side will get one bonus revision to spend on a specialized piece of spy equipment, which will only benefit this contest (because afterwards the designs will be extra-super classified). This could be a weapon for assassination or a tool that helps agents infiltrate, disguise themselves, or otherwise do spy stuff. Your existing technology will factor into what you can make, so anything complicated might be best if it builds off other designs, but relatively simple things can be made from scratch. The faction whose equipment has the biggest effect will receive one espionage credit.

huh... Some things about the Balefire seem odd. Could someone clarify some things for me?
How would it track something(heat source) to its side(where it maintains that heat source relative to its destination)? I see two options, one, that it's sensor is nose-mounted and flies sideways... Or its scanner is mounted at an angle, and likely an adjustable angle at that(unless it can only approach from a very narrow relative-velocity to angle-of-approach ratio).
If the scanner is at an angle, then it has to rotate the missile to maintain a lock, which would play merry havoc with its guidance if the target accelerates at all, or the sensor is mobile.
Regardless of how it steers the sensor, it pretty much needs to do so. Meaning that the sensor needs to be turret-mounted to some extend(though it could be a doughnut-shaped turret that doesn't impair aerodynamics), which would mean that it needs two guidance systems, one to keep the missile on target, and one to keep the sensors on target.

So we have three options: basically two correlating guidance systems, which pretty much necessitates a whole computer in the thing; A missile that can only be launched and can only track at very specific angles and speeds, meaning that it basically can't pursue any evasion at all and requires very precise combat approaches that must be tailored to the target, require the pilot to angle themselves so that the missile is already aligned with its target when launched, and can only occur from the outline of a specific wedge either in front or behind the target.
Or it isn't air-worthy and doesn't work at all...
Is anyone aware of technology aside from microchips that could alleviate this? Am I just completely missing how missiles work?

Anyways, it is time:
Doctrine: transistors
We put micro in our electronics so that they can micro while they electronic.

UF-MLRS-44 "Artemis" - An amphibious multiple rocket launcher, with a mobile lightweight frame based on our Salamander chassis.  It has different tires available designed for different terrains, including desert tires to help mitigate performance issues in the desert.  It carries 3 meter long 120mm rockets, and has an intended accurate range of 20km, carrying a 20kg warhead, the rockets are launched electrically as in the SARUKH.  The rockets are banked in grids of 40 rocekts, 4 rows of 10, in tubes.  The rocket grid is meant to tilt back to 90 degrees as part of its regular elevation mechanism to drop a grid of rockets onto the ground and quickly load another grid stood up on its end from a truck.  The intention of this feature is to quickly reload as an improvement on the SARUKHs relatively lackluster effective rate of fire.  It can lock its suspension to provide a stable platform of fire, and its aiming mechanism and panoramic telescope sight are designed to try to extend its accurate range out to the full 20 kilometers.

Comes with camo netting to set up over it, assuming that is not a hugely difficult thing to throw in.  Can be used with our other equipment as well.

Re-proposing this thing with the modified tires mentioned in discord (its based on the salamander, which is said to have mobility problems in the desert, so give it nicer tires).

e: To make it explicit here, the basis of this design is the BM-21 except with about half the effective range (in terms of the reach of the rockets and its ability to aim).
