I'd personally start with the campaigns of the first game and 1st expansion, then go from there. Should give you a good grasp of the mechanics and such, while being more engaging than endless skirmish matches.

Necrons also change a fair bit, becoming nearly unstoppable after a certain point due to worldwide resurrection, huge monoliths and teleporting artillery platforms.

A 4 player free for all, wit h one necron, by the end everyone was targeting the necron, and we barely beat him before it pumped out a second pyramid, the first of which we had destroyed.

My buddy and I did an Orks versus Necrons game and it was pretty hilarious. By the end, I was sending literally hundreds of boyz per second at the necrons.

The game gets pretty bonkers when you have multiple (heck just one) ork player with the tech that gives free boyz. Wouldn't have my warhammer any other way.

Nice pics you've got there. Yeah, SoB are a little dissapointing in terms of survivability, especially early game, but they start making that up later on. Kinda micro heavy though. But their hero units are a sight to behold, seeing that glowing angel eviscerate an avatar of Khaine or greater daemon is always nice.

Also, I see that you were playing on what might be my favorite map, the one with the bridges and big central platform. Protip: a squad of heavy weapons specialists, all with grenade launchers, can really bring the pain to anything that's scurrying in the lower streets. And fun to see as well. One of these, and a squad of conscripts holding the point in the corner itself, brought down a few waves of gaunts trying to push me off.

It does get a bit "search for the remaining upgrade". The Archangle, when it's first built, is a little disappointing when compared to things like the Reaver titan, Hierophant Biotitan and so on. It doesn't have that much health and doesn't deal too much damage, being badly damaged when duelling a greater daemon.
However, there are 2 tiers of 2 upgrades that increase both health and damage located in... I think the Holy Reliquary building that are easy to miss because they're on the bar used for grenades rather than the bottom right.
The thing is; the sisters get abilities like the really great "Emperor's Touch" or something that makes all their weapons fire beams of light that deal good damage to everything for a short while and a retribution ability that deals damage to attackers but because they lack the survivability these abilities get fired shortly before they all die. Invincibility of course helps with that but that's kind of to be expected.
It doesn't really help that they need to mostly use their infantry because nearly all of their vehicles are lacking in armour, ranged artillery or light walkers. Immolator is the base tank but again that needs to be upgraded to swap the flamer for a multi-melter. I tend to focus on only producing the artillery and sticking them further back.

I love this mod.  I played a game of 4v4, 4 IG versus 4 ork, all on insane difficulty and max army sizes.  Needless to say, the battle was insane.  At one point I was just using massed artillery and pumping out imperial conscripts as fast as I could just to hold the line.  I lost eventually, though, but it was pretty awesome.

Might be slightly offtopic, but I thought I'd post this here instead of dragging the trade thread back up. At somepoint I was apparently given a dungeon defenders collection steam gift since I can see it in my inventory and it claims that it is tradable sometime today, so could I trade it for a dawn of war master collection instead? If not I'll just hold onto it.

You mean, trade with steam, or with a specific user, or what? Not entirely sure what services steam offers (I never use these things) but if it's the second, I dunno if you'll find anyone really wanting to trade it.

EDIT: Then again, you might find someone who has a spare copy of a DoW game due to buying a collection/bundle, but I doubt you'll be able to get the full collection like this. I think your best bet is trying it in the steam summer sales, the dawn of war collection/thq collection get nice discounts.

I know the best idea is to wait for the summer sale, but I don't need the copy and I thought I'd ask. Really only want to get dark crusade (for the necrons/tau) and soulstorm (for the mod) since I got the base dawn of war game in some bundle, but yes, trade with someone.

Like I said if it ends up going nowhere, I'll just hold onto the thing like all the useless steam cards.

This is currently on sale for a touch under $13US for the Master Collection (all expansions) for the next 17hrs or so. So if you were thinking of buying, this is probably as good as it'll get for the next 6 months.

Soulstorm standalone is about $6.50 if you don't mind missing out on the standard campaigns and just want to play the mod (not sure what races you can play as in that case).
