Dawn of War 1: Soulstorm: Ultimate Apocalypse
« on: June 06, 2015, 06:38:12 am »

Ultimate apocalypse is a mod for the Soulstorm expansion of the original Dawn of war game. It adds tons and tons of content, several new factions, and generally expands the scope of the game.

You can use this thread for setting up multiplayer matches, or sharing pictures/videos from matches (I used to do this in the general 40K thread, but thought a separate thread might be more appropriate).

Mod list for easy multiplayer: when playing this mod in multiplauer, you'll have to have everything identical to other players. To make things easy, that should include the following:
-main game (patched to latest via steam, you can get a steam key if you bought it on disk)
-main mod
-latest patch (1.8.2)
-the three extra races (tyranids, deamons, inquisition), see moddb page for the correct links
-ntcore executable

Yes, we are all agreed this is the best Warhammer game/mod to have ever been made. Does MP still work? Bay12 should start purging the unclean.

Yes, me and pancaek (and other bay12ers) played some games in the past, pretty easy to set up. Don't have time to play multiplayer right now, but mech#4 has shown interest in playing online. Just make sure that all people playing have the exact same versions in terms of additional races installed and any extra bits (eg, if you install the special addon that increases the a'ount of ram soulstorm can use on your computer, make sure all people playing have it). Finally, certain winconditions can cause a desynch ingame, so watch out for that (mostly things like auto-reinforcing of squads, and some others).

While I am willing to play a multiplayer game sometime, I do not have the series on Steam. Well, not entirely true now as I was able to get Soulstorm via the CD Key on Steam but the others (Original, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade) cannot be activated the same way.

I have no problem buying the series on Steam if people want to start multiplayer sessions. It would probably be easier to arrange as well rather then using the base games match making, if that even still works. Also, if I buy it I can make use of all the teams online as I have been unable to find the original games manual despite sifting through storage bags and various drawers.

Color me interested, though it might be a while before I have the internet for it.

Perhaps a b12 approved list should be made, and published as a mod list on Steam?  (like the Civ 5 reddit guys did for their AI only battle?)

...

The Apocalypse mod is on Soulstorm, which is a stand-alone, so it should be the only base game you'll need.  I am the derp.

-----

Anyone that wants to get in on this should keep an eye on the coming Steam Sale later this month; the Master Collection will probably go -75% at least once, for a sale price of US$10.

I may join in later, but for now I'm staying busy between my kid visiting and my summer classwork.

Note: for online play, you also need the other games if you want their factions. Though I think you'll have everything for offline skirmish, for multiplayer only having soulstorm means only having SoB, D eldar and mod races.

Yes, you need to own base "Dawn of War" for Space Marines, Eldar, Orks and Chaos Space Marines, "Winter Assault" for Imperial Guard, "Dark Crusade" for Necrons and Tau and "Soulstorm" for Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle to be available to play in multiplayer.
You can play all factions in singleplayer skirmish without owning the other games.

...I vaguely recall that, now.  :P

The Master collection is US$10 on sale, which still isn't awful.

So any idea if they'll ever craft a single player campaign? That would be awesome.

Scheduled for their next grand releaase, which will take quite a while.

I might have time to do another pic serie somewhere today of a saved game. What would you rather see: guard vs loads of tyranids, or Sisters of Battle vs chaos?

So, I picked up Dawn of War in a bundle a bit ago, and I haven't tried it yet. Is it worth installing this mod to experience the game the first time? Or would I have it a lot easier playing vanilla first to figure things out?

I would suggest playing the base game first. The factions are all pretty similar to each other mechanics wise but they have different overarching styles. Ultimate Apocalypse exaggerates these differences.

The official game factions with the biggest differences are Necrons, Sisters of Battle, Orks and Dark Eldar. Necrons have one resource in Power and a second stat which is a percentage that increases for every control point you have an obelisk built on. This percentage represents the speed of your production, building and research.

Sisters of Battle have "Faith" which is generated by specific units and building upgrades. This allows the usage of unit power ups like healing, moral restoration and blasts of blinding light. How this works in UA is changed but more so you can use these power ups more often.

Dark Eldar have "Souls" which are gathered from dead enemies and buildings that generate them. These are used in much the same way as faith but more for area spells and world effects. UA adds a number of map-wide abilities.

Orks have "Waaagh!" which is generated by "Waaagh! Banners". This determines the amount of Orks you can produce (being a unit cap out of a max of 100 that reduces for every squad built) as well as what units you can make based on the level of "Waaagh!" you have.

The mod factions Tyranids, Daemons of Chaos and Inquisitorial Daemon Hunters all play quite differently. Daemon Hunters are the most normal though they have a heavy focus to countering Daemons (holy buildings that weaken nearby daemons and so on) while the Daemons of Chaos can deep-strike (teleport) nearly all of their units but slowly get weaker the further they are from warp-generating buildings.
Tyranids are the most different, having the two resources Requisition and Power more representing ground biomass and Hive Fleet biomass/connection. Building units from the barracks equivalent uses requisition but spawning units via the Hive Fleet requires Power. Tyranids also have Synapse which is generated from buildings and certain units that boosts the moral and stats of nearby squads. Getting later on, Capillary towers vastly increase the synapse range and health regeneration of all your buildings and resource generation.

Ultimate Apocalypse probably changes the Imperial Guard the most, adding a huge variety of Leman Russ tanks, Baneblade varients as well as aircraft and many different types of turrets. Necrons also change a fair bit, becoming nearly unstoppable after a certain point due to worldwide resurrection, huge monoliths and teleporting artillery platforms.
