Wow, did cave-ins get a lot more severe/realistic while I wasn't looking?
Just had a chunk of the mountain my miners are reshaping collapse down into the hollowed-out lower levels, taking a couple of them along with it. One guy got pretty horrifically injured- quite impressive, to be honest. Also impressive is the fact that he's still clinging to life. Sadly I don't have any medics, water access, soap, or splints. He shoulda thought of that before he went and got injured at the start of Winter! I'm going to put him out of his misery by dumping him back down there again.

Fortunately he is the weakest and least skilful of my five starting miners.
Even more fortunately, a replacement miner showed up in the last migrant wave and has already surpassed the guy's skill. Talk about ruthlessly climbing the corporate ladder, eh? This new guy's a real go-getter. I like him already.

Spoiler: Goodbye, Zasit. (click to show/hide)

Wow, he's practically a lump of meat with a beard now. He values sacrifice though. Guess it makes "sacrificing" *cough*bumping him off*cough* less painful unpleasant for him.

I don't believe this. I threw him several z-levels in an intentional cave-in, he somehow landed without further serious injury, then snapped out of 'rest'-mode, dragged his mangled body over to the other side of the cliff to grab a drink of potato wine and a slice of wolverine.

I guess he needed a reminder of how expendable he is to make him appreciate how precious life is, and stop wasting it lying around feeling sorry for himself? Whatever the case, he's still holding his pick so hopefully he plans on getting back to work at some point.

Meanwhile one of my other (and better) miners managed to fall down a hole and land on his ribcage.
At least he took the collapsed lung like a champ and didn't expect time off work. Still, I think I'll put a halt on the mining project for a while. Maybe I should just let these two retire to a relaxing twilight of stonecarving or something.

Edit: So, I decided to order some more rock dug out and see what happened.
Zasit dragged himself over there, caught up with his buddies and joined in. Of course, by the time he got there most of the work was done, but still, he gamely managed to swing his pick with his one remaining arm and do his bit. Then, once the work was done, he crawled back over the hill again and died next to the wagon/makeshift dining hall. What a trooper, he did that one last job with his dying breaths. o_o7

Now, to see how badly this upsets my four remaining miners from the start... they were all friends with him.

I started a new fort. Exposed the caverns, blocked off the access, and go back to carving out all the bits of a functional near-surface fort. Then a FB visits, a flaming blob.. that can't get to me, so I ignore it. Then, after a while, I get a GCS fight notification, so I start carving down in preparation for a GCS/cave critter lure trap. That's when I discover that Mr Flameblob FB, apparently died or set off a gigantic cavern fire, as the cave floor is covered in ash and flickering fires at the edges. And there's a slowly drying pool of mud in one corner that looks suspiciously like it used to be covered in water until a FB-splosion happened... If I had the combat reports, I'd repost them for potential epicness. As it is, thanks to the fire I'm pretty sure most of the 1st cavern is clear ...

Big news for my fortress; We are a Barony! Nominated my blacksmith, he does good work and he doesn't have many likes so he shouldn't screw our trade and resources over with mandates and export bans.

Also discovered the second cavern layer. Have started to make pretty furniture out of the tunnel tubes. Yay purple! Still no interesting creatures since the were antelope and undead siege, I'm starting to get nervous.

Oh, and one of my sworddwarves cut a troglodyte's hand off with his scimitar while clearing the caverns; the troglodyte went streaking through my fortress all the way up to the surface (I genned a fairly shallow world) before finally passing out. It was quite the sight. Now to clean up the blood  :-\

Edit: Addendum; My newly made squad of Speardwarves named themselves the "Future Mechanical Pines". I sense great things in their future if the quality of their service even comes close to the quality of their name.

I made my baron the cook... just cos' I love seeing the announcements flash up,  "Cerol Nitemkol, Baron, has made a masterpiece Whip Vine Roast"... he is probably the most useful member of my fort, and I feel somewhat socialist when I play DF.

Unretired a fort.

...for some inscrutable reason, all my 200+ dwarves are milling about on the surface, covering everything in a thick carpet of puke, while every single non-cavern room, passage, and living space is filled with salt water.

The saltwater washed down, though my new downstairs dining hall will forever remain a salt water reservoir...
...With a dead baby floating in it.
Yeah.

I wonder what was that all about.

Brine babies. It's like pickle babies, but with salt instead of vinegar.

Yes.

Yes to both.

Lava forges are easy, just channel lava to a place and create magma forges on top of it. The magma cannon is noticeably harder, but if you lurk well enough here and on the wiki, you can make one.

we learn through trial and error.

Sure you do. ESPECIALLY when you are working with magma.

Hint: If you want magma to stop going in hallway, make your dwarf dig upwards, then continue the hallway for a few tiles upward, then channel back downward.

Realised my fireblob FB was still alive. It's happily turning the first cavern layer's moss and beasties into fire, leaving a trail of ash, and steaming the lakes away as it wanders. I ought to either set up a collapsing trap or a caging set up to either dispose of it or to collect it for future use. Or leave it alive in the caverns as a punishment for dwarves and gobbos that offend me.

Edit: Realised that actually, the fireblobby has actually set the TREE-SHROOMS on fire. ... and probably roasted one of my dwarfs that got into the caverns somehow. Not to mention creating 'cave-in' notifications when it destroys a tree-shroom. Or at least that's what I figure happened with that collapse notification from an unrevealed cavern area.

Fuck!
I went away from the computer to do something for a while, came back and the settlement had withered. Not having played in a long time, I pressed space, expecting a screen where I could look around the fortress before finishing- and of course, it saves the game. Well, shit.

Even worse, apparently the end came simply from people dying of thirst. Ugh.
Now I really want to work out how to mod brewing into an automatic thing. Pretty sure someone mentioned how to do that a while back...
