I suspect that silk farms are broken.  I had about 6 tamed cave spiders and they seem to want to engage in leg-to-hand combat more than web.  They only web once they have successfully landed a bite; otherwise, they just fight.  Which has gotten 2 of the 6 killed so far.  Sigh.
With a silk farm I'd think you'd want the spider unable to get into melee range of the target. All the designs I've seen of a silk farm involve the spider being separated from the bait by a wall of fortifications or a moat. Or both. With the addition of climbing I'd think fortifications would work better.

Sorry. One thing I noticed about this world after I made my first legends export is that there are no breeding pairs of megabeasts. But I'm still holding out for a male giant so I can breed them, since there are only male cyclopes.

A moody dorf created a wooden piccolo, which was fine... but wait, there were two images of an artifact throne, and an image of a gem animal trap...

Then I checked, I really had an extra copy of that iron throne!

But I could find only one iron throne in the "l" menu.

According to the wiki there's a longstanding problem with using cats as bait; I'll try replacing it with a turkey and see if the problem persists.

I use the captain of the guard as bait. Just set him to patrol every second month

Yes, that was the silk farm, with a variety of baits which didn't work.  They just wouldn't spit web at anything.  Finally I gave up and stationed them in the caverns as guards, which is where the behavior I commented on was observed.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

You know, despite the steadily climbing wealth of Bastiongate, my dwarves' quality of life hasn't improved much since they got the new dining hall several years ago. They're still sleeping in the cramped quarters they were 20 years ago. And while I may not be able to do much about that, I can improve their rooms a little. So I'm giving them rock cabinets. I'll replace the founding seven's with lead ones so they still have better rooms.

Btw, I fixed the silk farm issue by building fortifications behind the cat. Apparently the FB requires its bait to be within a 4- (5, if you count its own square)-tile radius.

My founding carpenter just beat a wild VCC to death with his bare hands. His only wound was a bite to the head - only after the beast was dead did I realize how badly that could have gone.

Have set an engraver to smoothing ~1000 floors. From 0 experience, obviously, as my expedition year became leader in 6 months, and requires some seriously good living quarters. Have finished the thron room, only 9000 more bucks to blow on the bedroom before I can start on the tomb and Dining room. Luckily we have a lot of persimmon wine. The King seems to spend as much time thinking about persimmon wine as he does on how rubbish his rooms are.

I've cleaned out one of the spires as much as I can for now. I'll dig out more when hell is safer. My sole strand extractor made one strand and went for a drink, said strand was turned into a wafer and then into some commemorative coins.

That's pretty impressive considering the size difference. A dwarf is 60,000 cm3, a voracious cave crawler is 900,000 cm3. Literally 15 times a dwarf's size.
