Bleh. Another semi-megaproject I grow bored with and leave for a new project. I really gotta get this ADD under control :P

Anyways, genned a new world, with most of the same settings as my last one, changing a few variables here and there. I kept this world because it has "The God-Forsaken Desert", a haunted, medium savagery desert that has pretty much all the features I like.

I went to embark there, and realized the civ I had selected had no sites on the world map, so I went to Legends to see what happened.

Sure enough, it is a dead civilization, killed off by the elves in a long, bloody conflict that apparently is still being waged. The other dwarven civilization is massive, holding 90% of the central mountains on the map.

I decided I would at least try to do a "rebuild the civilization" embark, and picked a nice, peaceful serene biome next to an elven retreat so I can rebuild the Mountainhomes. Sure, there's no king, and probably no dwarven caravan, and I'm liable to be beset by elves at every turn, but I want something fun.

Lets do this.

The founding 7 are survivors of the war, running from the destruction of their homes at the hands of the elves. 2 axedwarves, a smith, carpenter, farmer, mason, and a doctor were chosen and given a mandate: Rebuild the civilization, by any means necessary. Taking only the most important items, and upon finding a suitable site, strike the earth.

Trying to build an obsidian farm without reading the wiki.
I discovered that, yes, I need iron floodgates, but I also have to be sure that that iron is from magnetite (not yet found the hematite), since the limonite one is meltable.
I'd experiment more when I have finished buildng beds and cabinets in all the living area.
Trade is neglected, as I do not have crafts or jewels - too busy in digging, plus I wanted to keep a low profile.
Having a 3z-level ramp before the real entrance is good to prevent snatcher and thieves intrusions: they get spotted and fly away.

The large majority of igneous (magma-formed) rocks work as well for magma-safe materials.

Or quartzite, mica, orthoclase, bauxite, and chert (note that granite is NOT one of the magma-safe igneous rocks).
Also, the iron produced from limonite is identical to that produced from any other iron ore. Iron as a metal should be magma-safe, but the ore itself may not be.

Your problem, Kaspa, may be that you used non-magma-safe mechanisms in the floodgates to link them to a lever. mechanisms in buildings exposed to magma are considered equally with the materials of the primary constituents of the building, thus if you mechanisms are not composed of magma-safe materials, the building will deconstruct and the materials it's made from may deconstruct. I'd suggest either finding magma-safe stones on your map, or producing iron mechanisms to use in your obsidian farm.

Hidden beneath rusting weapons was a mass of assorted bones. An elf, a goblin, even an ogre. All just waiting for someone to walk by and notice them, like some kind of land mine of horror.

According to the Wiki, even limonite is not magma-safe.
I suppose that I'll set up a magnetite-only stocpile around a smelter. And I'll build some mica mechanisms, I have plenty of mica.

But the main issue of my trial was that the lava and the water met in the middle and generated only a "wall" of obsidian that I am now unable to dig unless if I want flow with lava the smelting area.
I'll go with the wiki sample.

At least this time I've been able to equip every one (10) with iron helms, iron shields, iron weapons (battle axes, short swords, spears, war hammers) and iron legwears. I have yet to forge the mail shirt and the gauntlets, and I'll have the militia fully equipped.
Then I'll go for a markdwarves squad, I suppose.


@Lich: I'm curious to know if you'll mange to rebuild the Mountainhomes.
I'm wondering, after the first two hardcoded migrant waves, would there be other waves?

limonite can be smelted into iron, and mechanisms can be made from iron.  So, you can do it!

Yep. 3 males, 4 females. Should have a couple by the end of the first year, and at least a relationship formed between some others.

I'm wondering, after the first two hardcoded migrant waves, would there be other waves?

From what I saw in Legends, and on the world map (I'm not sure about my info from Legends though) it is a totally dead civilization, so after the first 2 migrant waves I shouldn't be getting more. I'll grow my population through births, and hopefully have enough to manage to get a 200+ population in a few decades.

I did get it back in adventurer mode, even though the forge was destroyed. It was in some remote corner of my strip mines.
Artifacts survive Fort destruction now?

Taming and breeding (or trying to breed) a swarm of giant cannon beetles.

Not quite "Dwarven Battle Tanks", but close enough.

If only we could ride them into combat. :(

I have yet to understand how to strip all the gobboes possession when caged.
I can design the cage to be dumped, or I can assign a caged goblin to a pit that leads him to the militia trainingsluaghtering chamber, but I am unable to remove his equipment before. Not that it matters, its 10 armor-clad dwarves versus a single goblin, but this leaves the gobbo-butchering room very messy - and I cannot use it for a while because of cleaning labours

I've found several from past forts, including an adamantine crutch, an adamantine crown, and two adamantine battleaxes. I just had to spend hours searching for them due to items scattering outside of my sealed vault.

How to disarm hostiles in cages
An easy way to take away all prisoner-held armor and clothing is via the mass designation tool. Designate an area with d-b-c to claim and d-b-d to dump an area (i.e. your animal stockpile, filled with caged prisoners). Afterwards, hit k, and go over each cage and press d for each of them - this stops the dumping on the cages themselves. You will need a garbage dump set up already for the dwarves to take the dumped items to. The dwarves will strip the prisoners naked and haul the items away. The cages themselves (and the creatures within) will remain in place. The items will end up in the garbage dump zone. If you want to to reuse the items, you need only to designate claim d-b-c on your garbage dump zone to reclaim the items after they are dumped there. If your animal stockpile is outdoors, you need to have the "Dwarves Gather Refuse from Outside" o-r-o order set.

An easier way to selectively disarm prisoners is to designate mass forbid d-b-f and mass dump d-b-d on all of the caged prisoner stockpile. You will need a bookkeeper for this. Press z and go to the stocks screen. Find an item category with items marked F and D. Press f to remove the F for those items, but don't remove the D. This will unforbid them, but they will remain marked for dumping. When you exit the stocks screen, the dwarves will haul those items from the cages and drop them into the garbage dump. When the dwarves have finished the hauling tasks, designate a mass claim d-b-c and mass undump d-b-D on the same area as earlier to remove the forbid and dump designations from the cages and the rest of the contents.
This method can be used to confiscate specific items from caged prisoners, like weapons, armor or bags containing stolen property or kidnapped children. It can be more useful to just remove their weapons if you want to use your caged prisoners for target practice. They will be more durable with their clothes and armor equipped, but not very dangerous without their weapons.

EDIT: I got a legendary Tanner, any ideias for him?

3 Dwarfs saved my fort! :D
some annoying raven where attacking my fisher dwarfs so i went my "military"(Two axe's man and one hammer dude(Note: We got lot of steel  8) ))
and when they lefted the entrance, what they see?
10 bow goblins!
they went in rage mode the hammer guy was injured, a ranger helped him..his fine...
while the other two(with some nice axe's) cutted goblins head's. Praise Armok for this victory!

First FB my fort meets, one and a half later  is a flying quadruped composed of glass, which is pretty damn tough.

Not only that but it has deadly dust that instakills by bleeding, starting a few thousand ticks after exposition.

It slaughtered my whole military,  and is currently making a beeline for my completely unprotected fort. Well, savescum time.

Because losing isn't fun when you are not even started with a fort's goal.
