Hey, what's the technique to split the stacks that you use?  I've never found a good method.

In short, tons of caravan micromanagement.

At length...

This is acceptable as long as the baby has been decontaminated.
And I'm not worried about zombie babies so much as the 3 Dwarf Elite Wrestler evil dust husks on the surface

Trying to think of some screenshot or image to visualize those guys, but I'm drawing a blank :(

The animated corpses died at least once before, are soulless, and may just be severed hands/heads or the like. You can get someone's animated corpse and their ghost at the same time, in different places. They probably look dead or decaying.

The husks (also sometimes called "thralls" or "zombies" by the RNG) never actually died, contain the souls (so no ghosts from those guys until you kill the husks!), and retain skills/learning/equipment. I think of it a lot more like "the corruption" or mind-controlling blood-draining plant spore parasites. A lot more like the technically-living modern zombies than the classic necromancy. They probably look like normal living dwarves, except for being dust-covered, dehydrated, and pale.

Fifth year in Searingmines.

Still waiting for the first siege; the militia is getting restless and will soon hit Legendary from all the sparring. One werebull child made a short visit, scared a dwarf child and left. That's all the hostile activity this fort has got so far.

A farmer made an artifact elephant bone mace, "The Brash Spurn", with an image of terrified Duke surrounded by vermin. Not as much a fly swatter as those artifact adamantine maces but still quite useless. The first soldier to go On Break during a siege (whenever they'll come) will probably get it, together with the artifact goat bone shield, "Trampledhero."

Continuing on from previously:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The curse spread through the entire fortress in 4 months. GoldKingdom's strength crumbled and 40+ werecreatures were released onto the world. I kept the world, eager to meet the Queen, and recruited 7 brave dwarves to set up another fortress in the western highlands as opposed to the east. (As far away as I could get).

It is my 2nd Autumn and things are developing exceedingly well. However my army is not yet equipped due to me missing the caravan and not finding any metal yet.

The Werehedgehog Tlalakankus Senrefensast has come!

Well... Shit.

Well the proud army of Goldhome managed to fend off the Werehedgehog and eviscerate him and extend its life by one whole season before Doren Yelledstar the Rock of Sports, a fearsome cyclops came and ruined my day by turning every dwarf into mashed tomatoes.

Lesson learned, get metal asap before pumping out trade goods.

Stupid snooty diplomat.  "Disrespected the trees!" he starts ranting.  I mean, what trees?  It was all the dorfs could do to avoid sparring practice on his corpse right there, but they were afraid if he didn't leave he wouldn't be able to procure a proper war.

With a web-throwing Forest Titan, slayer of a hundred kangaroos and keas, cooling its heels in the tunnel under the wall, the King can't wait.  "RELEASE ... THE ... TI..."  He keeps having to choke himself off lest somebody actually do it before it's time.  There's already a glut of silk on the market.

Sieges.

Holy hell.

72 gobbos and mounts.

If and when we survive this, though, we get a free cave dragon.

@caknuck:  Thanks.  I was afraid you were going to say that.  I've tried doing that and apparently I either muck it up or I have the patience of an ADD Jackrabbit sensing a hawk.  What a pain.

A giant olm and its rider have snicker-snuck past the first row of weapon traps and are now caged prisoners.

I'm now digging out the Lightningcave, a barbaric caged arena where prisoners can fight.

My dwarves have somehow been getting blood on their skulls and then washing it off in the river that is on the opposite side of the embark from the main stockpile. They leave the soap next to the river and grab a new bar of soap from the stockpile every time. There are now eleven bars of soap on a single tile next to the river.

Apparently panic is a thing now, I lost two dwarves, not because the goblins killed them, but because the goblins escaped their cages and spooked them, and the dwarves started punching other dwarves while trying to escape the area... So the military dwarves had to bash their heads in... Fun.

The Dwarven Boarding School is again teaching essential Dwarven skills with a faculty of 112 wooden training spears. Soon the children of Searingmines (all 92 of them) will get a regime of healthy exercise and an occasional chance to harden themselves against pain and horror! Yes. Now let's see if the changes I made will prevent casualties this time...

I also started building a pit trap for goblin invaders for easy goblinite mining. However, I overengineered a bit and looks like I might be getting a 13000+ cubic Urist magma cannon reservoir instead.

Metal starvation is starting to take its toll, I've already been hit with one goblin siege, and my army of 8 had to kill two archers by beating them to death with the crossbows they brought when they migrated in. I have actually given one of my soldiers an iron knife taken from a kobold thief because we have so few melee weapons
