"The world is same as ever." Keep saying yourself that if it makes you sleep better, Melbil...

Yes.  The world remains a psychotic hellscape of fighting beasts, fire and the shredded remains of all non-monstrous life.  Same as ever.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

This is the second most awesome thing I have ever seen on this forum in the limited time I have been here.
(The first was the water mine cart cannon because who doesn't like cannons? :P)

I'd like to imagine that this world was originally a normal Dwarf Fortress world, with only moderate amounts of madness and carnage. Twelve years ago some kind of cataclysm happened and the world was filled with otherworldly monsters; that marks the start of the current calendar.

Anyway, it is month of Moonstone of the year 12, according to whatever calendar. The miners have broken into a huge abandoned labyrinth and  found a blue garnet quern which was gladly added as a part of the kitchen complex. The wheat flour roasts made with it taste great, save some odd flavor that no one can't quite identify.

Olsmo the she-dragon has adopted trapdoor spider tactics, hiding in a hole waiting for passing wildlife to savage. Once I witnessed her shooting flames upwards from her hideout, presumably directed at a giant parakeet flying past. The resulting fire burned half of the map to ashes... again. This might be a recurring problem in the future.

Ostoth the roc has parked herself almost directly above the fortress entrance but it seems she's flying too high to notice little dwarves scuttling about. Instead she's directing her vigilance towards various flying wildlife and brutalizing them midair. Falling and exploding bird carcasses provide welcome addition to fortress food stores.

Savagesilver now has twenty-six citizens, or should I say terrified survivors. Budding military is already drilling with their caravan-bought equiment, aiming to become strong enough to take on the monsters on their own terms.

I wish my hunting birds were that awesome, but they seem to be content on the ground :'(

Could be that the last king is still alive somewhere, maybe as a bandit leader or something. He could be old but as long as he lives the civilization exists.
I can guarantee that is not what is happening here, unless you know of any other dorfs who lived to be 10,000 years old with no necromancers or vampires or whatnot around?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit: yep, immediately after reclaiming a fort one of my dorfs became King.

Ngostôz Conflictmessiah the Steamy Diamond
That has to be one of the most badass and fitting names I've ever seen in DF.

Ok, that was only a guess; one of my forts had a bandit king living somewhere and keeping the civ alive. Too bad he died of old age during the second year; I'd really have liked to invite him over after over a century of camping in the wilderness.

---

At Savagesilver the constant danger has now subsided just a little bit. Monsters may be capable of crushing bones and vaporizing flesh but dwarves' strength is building things. Years of living in the shadow of huge beasts had taught the dwarves of The Road of Slaughters to build especially quickly and quietly, so one night crack teams of mason commandos sneaked out to block all monster lair entrances.

The mission was a huge success. The only monsters remaining on the surface are now Ostoth the roc who mercifully has moved to the far corner of the map and Ngostôz the bronze colossus bully who now seems to be content hanging from one rock salt pillar at the Fight Club structure. I didn't know bronze colossi could climb.

The dwarves are now gleefully looting the map clean of everything valuable, like the masterwork bronze statues left by destroyed colossi and piles and piles of valuable dragon, roc and hydra bones. The inner Fight Club area guarded by Ngostôz is still off limits but almost everywhere else is now safe to travel.

It totally is.

Also roc/hydra + bronze colossus = bronze colossus covered in blood. Dragon + bronze colossus covered in blood = bronze colossus emitting boiling blood. Also that is pretty fucking metal.

Hence steamy diamond. Although it vaguely reminds me of porn names... so bronze colossus pornstar emitting boiling blood ?

That's enough internet for you today, Naryar, we don't need that train of thought to go any further.

Ostoth the roc is dead! She was defeated in an aerial battle with a perfectly ordinary giant mantis who earned the name "Twinkledrains" with its deed. Ah well, every random name can't be badass... Now the dwarves can at least go outside a bit more freely, without the fear of decapitation from above.

Meanwhile, Ngostôz the bronze colossus is again on the move, hunting a herd of giant tortoises. I've never seen anyone punch the shell off a tortoise before. I'll have to do something about Ngostôz next.
