Vodka and orange, gradually increase the amount of vodka until you get used to it.

And there's the thing with taking a shot of vodka, then eating salt and sipping a lemon slice after. Don't know for sure if it takes away the taste; mostly I just take a shot straight.

No, you don't stir the salt in. I don't know how exactly, but you drink, then eat a bit of salt and drink a lemon slice after.

That derives from the tequila thing. Tequila + salt + lime/lemon is perhaps over 100 years old. It's usually lime though. I never heard of it with vodka, that sounds like a cultural travesty.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It has to do with the overwhelmingly bad taste of beer (well for me) that I can't even force down without gagging.

There's proper, good beer and then there's marketed dog piss. You probably had the second.

Though beer is an acquired taste, yes.
Or if you want alcohol that really doesn't taste of alcohol, just do the obvious thing and drink any well-known American light beer since they're all basically water anyways.

I think this is highly relevant:

vodka is the nastiest, worst tasting alcohol you could have. So if you're looking for drinks that DONT taste alcohol, i'd avoid vodka at all costs. Literally it tastes antiseptic.

Good top-shelf vodkas can be fairly smooth, without any harshness and a fairly mild alcohol taste (for a distilled spirit). Cheap vodka is about as harsh as they come.

Maybe? Maybe it's just me, but i've never had good-tasting vodka. It tastes... well how you would expect alcohol to taste. At least whiskey has some flavor to it. Vodka just tastes like dilute alcohol.

Yeah... people say vodka doesn't have much of a taste, but that hasn't been my experience.
That stuff's pretty gross. Still not as bad as rum, though, in my opinion. It seems to work well as a mixer, though. Weird.

You may want to give beer a second look, it covers a very wide range of tastes/flavors.  If you're a coffee drinker you might enjoy dark beers: imperial stouts, scotch ales, oatmeal stouts, dark lagers, etc.  There are also some tasty mid-range beers, like a nutbrown ale, or such.

If you're only trying american lagers like bud light or PBR, you're not getting a good introduction to beer.

The best advice on drinking I can give is: Don't drink cheap, you get what you pay for when it comes to alcohol. (most bars will give you samples of what they have on tap if you want to taste test a few things)

Gonna have to go with Long Island Ice Tea myself. I don't hate the taste of alcohol, and it's very easy to get drunk on those without getting the skunk mouth that comes from beer, or whatever kind of taste hard liquor leaves in your mouth.

I think that's why I kinda gravitated toward dirty martinis. The right mixture of olive juice almost completely neutralizes the taste of the vodka, just leaving you with salty goodness.

A good vodka doesn't taste good the way a good whiskey (or a 'good' sample of just about any other spirits for that matter) does. Quite the oposite, the better the vodka, the less flavor it has (excluding flavored vodkas, of course). As such it makes a great mixer for juices or other things with a good flavor of their own. If you're drinking it straight, you're never going to completely lose the alcohol flavor in a distilled spirit, so you do still get a mild alcohol flavor from even the best vodka if you're drinking it straight. But the alcohol flavor of a high end vodka is still less noticeable to most people than the alcohol flavor of a similarly high-end whiskey, rum, tequila, etc. at the same proof.
