Compared to the brown liquors (whiskey, cognac, bourbon, scotch, etc...) I'd agree.

But for me vodka has a high vapor lock quality to it, for some reason. Mixing it gets rid of that, but when I drink it straight I can't ignore it. Gin is still worse but....if I had to choose which straight liquor burn I prefer, I'd probably say one of the brown liquors. I think it's just a weird psychological thing I have with the clear liquors.

You might try a sherry instead of liquor or regular wine. At Christmas every year I'd get a couple sips of this from my dad's glass and developed quite a taste for it.

It packs a bigger alcoholic punch than most wine but it has a pretty complex flavor rather than the straight alcohol taste of liquors, or the sourness and dry mouth you get from drinking more than a few glasses of wine. It tends to be on the more expensive to the really expensive side. It's a little highbrow for your average bar but most people probably keep some around. I don't know what cheap sherry is like but I imagine it's terrible, if cooking sherry is anything to go by.

Good top-shelf vodkas can be fairly smooth, without any harshness and a fairly mild alcohol taste (for a distilled spirit). Cheap vodka is about as harsh as they come.

Maybe? Maybe it's just me, but i've never had good-tasting vodka. It tastes... well how you would expect alcohol to taste. At least whiskey has some flavor to it. Vodka just tastes like dilute alcohol.

A good vodka doesn't taste good the way a good whiskey (or a 'good' sample of just about any other spirits for that matter) does. Quite the oposite, the better the vodka, the less flavor it has (excluding flavored vodkas, of course). As such it makes a great mixer for juices or other things with a good flavor of their own. If you're drinking it straight, you're never going to completely lose the alcohol flavor in a distilled spirit, so you do still get a mild alcohol flavor from even the best vodka if you're drinking it straight. But the alcohol flavor of a high end vodka is still less noticeable to most people than the alcohol flavor of a similarly high-end whiskey, rum, tequila, etc. at the same proof.

what kind of proof are we talking here?

That pretty much sums up my opinion on vodka as well.

Around 40 % usually, many popular brands have 37,5 %.

As for non-alcoholic tasting alcoholic drinks, I'd recommend beer mixed with coke or lemonade, that's quite popular here and it's what most young people start with.

Yeah I agree with vodka tasting like disinfectant as well. Though it becomes OK when it's mixed.

However I tasted one vodka who was rather nice. I suppose it's like beer.

I'd recommend beer mixed with coke or lemonade,

ugh

Try light beers, and/or pale beers.

I'd just try champagne- it tastes like a somewhat bitter fruit soda.

usually rum and coke, light on the rum, or vodka and *insert fruit name here* juice is pretty not bad, you'll probably get a bitter result or obvious aftertaste, but whatever. Try jello shots, or rummy bears.

You can get top range gins that are smooth enough to be like drinking water, though you'll be paying through the teeth. Also not sure whether it's the actual flavour of alcohol (which is still there) or the sharpness that is bothering you.

Also if your having a bad physical reaction I'd get that checked out by a doctor. Alcohol does enough damage when you don't have a medical condition. If you do have a medical problem with alcohol best to find out before you start destroying your kidneys & liver.

I do love me some champagne. I can get hammered on relatively little of it compared to beer, and it's so light and mild you don't really even taste the alcohol until you've swallowed it. It goes down pretty easy (other than the carbonation.)

Has anyone said wine-coolers yet? Those are good.

EDIT:
Also Mike's Hard Lemonade and Mike's Hard Limeade

EDIT:
Also a mix of MD 20/20 Orange Jubilee Wine with orange juice or iced tea

EDIT:
As far as beer goes I find the least obnoxious in flavor is a beer called "Brawler" made by Yards brewery. I think Yards is only available in the northern half of the east coast united states though

Maybe Stroh Rum 80% will not taste like alcohol. With some luck, the alcohol vapur coming off the glass will have numbed your taste buds enough to not taste the alcohol once you lifted it further to your lips.

Oh -  and do not smoke while drinking that

when made properly long-island iced-tea tastes like iced tea. Tastes awful if you screw it up though.

I used to drink cheap dark rum and blackcurrant juice - couldn't taste the rum at all. If you're in the US blackcurrant cordial may not be a thing, the big UK brand is Ribena. You buy it concentrated and add water - SCIENCE!

Man, I'd love a rum and blackcurrant about now. It IS nearly 9am.

Which reminds me - blackberry wine is quite good if you don't like the taste of alcohol. At least the brand I've tried is overwhelmingly sweet; can't remember the name, only that it advertised itself as kosher?

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
