In the four days since this log was last updated, a surprising amount of work has been done.
The fortress itself was brought, by the valiant efforts of Elagn, Chaotic Skies, the Mayor, and more than two hundred Serf workers to what seems to be as stable a structural position as it can sustain around day three, with liberal application of forged structural beams and drystone arches in the distinctive dwarven style. Short of a large earthquake or another nearby kiloton-range groundburst, the fortress' structure is likely to weather whatever may come.
The last day was spent allowing the exhausted workers a respite while secondary teams labored to clean up the rubble, work debris, and ash-laced mud of three days incautious work. The resulting several tons of junk appears under a scan by Patham's automaton to be lightly radioactive, and has for the moment been stored in a pile some fifty meters from the Auxiliary Exit's fortifications.
Porkins' noble efforts to improve the living conditions of the goblin refugees, along, of course, with the other topside survivors, have met with some not-inconsiderable success. Charcoal burners for light and warmth have been set up, as well as a set of lever-operated flaps to improve airflow from the surface. These are operated in bursts whenever it is deemed necessary by off-duty soldiers or Serf volunteers, and a similar system, implemented on a considerably larger scale and likely powered by excess energy from the upcoming dam, shows promise in greatly improving the fort's air quality.
Magus Patham's efforts to get some kind of decontamination center in place have finally come to fruition, with a simple fire-heated gravity shower allowing the occupants of a cloth-walled booth off to the side of the Auxiliary Entrance's hastily carved internal hall to wash themselves in relatively clean, warm water. The waste water is collected via a slight slope chopped into the stone beneath the booth, where it flows into a collection barrel. Whenever the shower is out of use, this barrel's contents and filtered through several layers of cave-silk cloth, boiled, and reused. The various waste particulate collected thusly are worryingly radioactive, with the concentrated stocks of usually diffuse material reading as a legitimate, if minor, hazard. The material is kept damp to avoid its being picked up by air currents, and stored in metal barrels placed well away from oft-used corridors.
If precautions are taken, the collected material could be analyzed quite readily to gain more information about the nature of the radiological hazard.
Food supplies, while ample for the time being, are slowly shrinking, and will need to be managed if the fort is to hold out.
The dam looks to be almost complete, with cycles of diagnostic examination and testing underway while the turbines and generators are completed, installed, removed for alteration, and so on. The structure will be fully operational, and with considerably more sustainable output than was originally estimated, by the end of next week.
Patham and Chaotic's lessons are progressing rapidly, with Chaotic beginning to gain rudimentary practical spellcasting capability. Nothing beyond a simple light-producing cantrip thus far, but prospects are good. Several of the locals, including a Settler foreman and the goblin Priest, have expressed interest in participating.
Patham's camera project, while it has not produced any usable prototype, has turned up a good supply of relevant information, with searches of the PEA datapad's partially-corrupted databanks turning up several archived papers on the subject of simple surveillance, including a brief report of Parasol site observation gear from the disastrous Everoc task force, uploaded to the Overnet briefly before contact was lost.
A few sweeps of fortress approaches are made with basic scrying spells, revealing nothing of significance besides the general lack of any living things in the areas effected by Zha's Death.
Mayor Murdoc's ongoing efforts to write a general manual of science and technology as the Homeland knows them are progressing at a reasonable pace, though perhaps recruiting others to pen sections in their areas of expertise would be advisable if the text is to be finished within a year.
A messenger from the Administrata has arrived on goatback, bringing news of a huge relief caravan and Military expedition to the site, believed to be within two weeks travel from the installation. The tired dwarf will remain here until it arrives, and is available to any site administrative personnel who wish further information.
