Apparently Confederate flag burning is also currently going big for the #BlackLivesMatter followers. Not hard to see the message.

And in case you weren't aware, acorn-head there is wearing patches for Rhodesia and South Africa on that oh-so-edgy windbreaker.

Old South Africa. There's a pretty important distinction. Someone wearing that flag here would get in quite a lot of trouble.

The whole thing is terrible, but I can't honestly say I expect anything to change. I am somewhat amazed by some people's apparent ability to say it's just a lone wolf or whatever when America seems to get through more massacres in a year than most countries do in a decade, though.

The real take away is that lone wolves aren't "just". They're pretty ubiquitous. Organizations get caught, individuals exist in the unknown.

Lot of comparisons being made about the fact that this guy killed nine people and was arrested without incident, and escorted by police to his court hearing today with body armor on, versus any number of unarmed black people shot by cops in recent months, or the 14-year old girl at the Texas pool party that was thrown to the ground.

He's a lone wolf only because he's was a white non-Muslim.
Dammit, Dutchling, stop giving away our secrets!

Also, all white non-Muslims who do this sort of thing are obviously "mentally ill". Whereas black/Hispanic/Muslim shooters aren't, because that's just who they are.

Apparently, the South Carolina state legislature is still keeping the Confederate flag at full mast when every other flag in the city is at half mast.
That... is actually because it takes an act of state congress to move that flag. It's padlocked in place, and not to be moved by dint of state law. At some point SC legislated that the confed flag was to be placed there and not tampered with (presumably except for the occasional replacement or cleaning, I'unno), for fear that a future governor would remove it. If someone had put it at half mast, they would have faced charges, apparently.

As for the gun thing, apparently the guy actually bought the gun himself, just with birthday money. To whatever extent it actually matters, the firearm itself wasn't a straight up gift. It's worth noting that the critter in question apparently had prior record, and should not even remotely have been able to do that, but *shrugs*

From everything I've heard about the case, the guy was a ticking time bomb that SHOULD have been caught and defused a long time ago. He should should probably have been institutionalized well before he had a chance to do anything.

This brings back memories of the whole Gabriel Giffords shooting (politician being shot by some crazy person, except she survived the ordeal) resulting in absolutely nothing happening whatsoever by someone who should not have been able to own a gun. As expected, the NRA's solution to gun violence is more guns.

I have to say the more I hear of the NRA the more I become convinced they need clumsy brain surgery with a lead mallet.

Yeah, it's almost like we need more guns just make a situation to prove them wrong, but then again, they'll probably just shout with their derpiest faces MOAR GUNZ!

Anyways, I have a feeling that the whole race relations thing will come up during the debates (not a huge lot, maybe a question or two) and while obviously the candidates can't say anything bad, I'm wondering how the republicans would do, considering that they're well, republican.

Edit: They probably won't be direct questions about racism because obviously, theres only one politically correct answer. They'll probably be indirect (or less direct) stuff like in regards to police.

So we're all agreed that the NRA are basically Da Orky Boyz, but dumber?

"See, da fix for all da big un's shootin' all da snotlings and gobs what wuzznt doin' nuffin....is MOAR DAKKA. Dat's right orky logic, dat iz."

And at least Jared Loughner was a certifiable nutcase. I'm not sure that Roof has shown any kind of psychoses, other than hating black people. Though thank you LW for proving my point -- the instant assumption is "white guy commits mass shooting = must be a nutter". And you're not even American.

The problem with that kind if thinking is that, as far as I know, only/mostly white people go on this type of shooting sprees, right?

Well it would be true for Arabs as well but the religious right obstructionistically refuses to let us classify blind faith as a disorder.
