  • 2. FPS players are overwhelmingly male. 94% male Halo Reach in this survey. The Male brain is rewarded by such high-intense gaming more than female brains, male brains are literally wired to become hooked on this shit and be addicted. It's why men flood FPS genres, because it is their dopamine and opium all wrapped up in one.
Women outnumber men when it comes to RPGs and are at least 1/3 of all FPS/MMO gamers.
You know it helps to have a point when you're pulling up statistics.
1. Split FPS and MMO up, the two do not go together. Your stats are also specific to PC games and not to consoles - as we all know most male gamers are plebs playing on plebboxes. That's ok, but not near enough the meat of the market. The litmus test will be destiny and advanced warfare; overall there will be many gamers getting jaded to COD: WITH MECHS COD: IN SPACE COD: IN JUNGLES e.t.c. so you'll also get blokes getting bored of them which could possibly leave room for a greater female demographic which hasn't bothered with FPSs and so would find the experience fresh. Who knows, the future is in the future.
2.
Well asides from that article not actually SHOWING us the survey results (seriously what is that), it did link to a blog post which reads hilariously like a Reddit childhood story about how much of a niceguy™ they are.

After years of spectating, hoping for boys to invite me into their inner-circle of gaming,
This is sad
3. I'm saying male gamers flood FPS's like locusts in a corn field... You're not exactly proving me wrong. I think it was COD MW3 that had female gamers at 40% off the top of my head. RPGs tend to be held to higher standards than FPSs. If that stat's true it'd be rather interesting to see which games hold the biggest shares and how they were marketed. Most importantly - how good were they?

Candycrush is also a freemium pay to win game.

Yeah, I hate those. Having in-app purchases is always a no buy for me, unless the in-app purchase is upgrading to full version or something.

@Caz
Definition of "short". :P I'd say that most FPS, etc. games are designed to be played in bursts that are generally >5-10 minutes, while many match 3 games like Candy Crush are designed to be played in bursts of <2 minutes (while some MOBA's and RPG's can be designed to be played in >30 minute bursts). And when I say "designed", I'm talking about the minimum amount of time for a single round, as opposed to the actual amount of time spent playing on it (as you graciously pointed out :) ).

It's an arbitrary distinction, of course, but in this case I'm using it to arbitrarily define a genre (which are all arbitrarily created anyways).

Comic sans came from Watchmen.
Indeed. Comic sans is an okay font... For what it is. Use it beyond it's purview, and suddenly it becomes extremely aggravating. The same thing could happen to any respectable font: imagine if everything from birthday cards to default fonts on mobiles was Times New Roman?
I'd... actually be fine with that. Times New Roman is so classy. I don't hate comic sans, but it's just not that good, and has very few uses where it fits.
You have to admit, it would be sort of odd seeing it on a birthday card. It'd be like having the little message on the card being "DEATH HAS MADE ONE STEP CLOSER TO YOU"; it's just incongruous.
...
Thinking about it, that in Times New Roman would be a pretty good birthday card.
Actually opening Gimp to edit the fonts on a few internet birthday cards into TNR right now.

Wait I know a definition that seperates Candy crush from everything else.

Candy Crush is a Waiting game!

To get back on topic: I think gaming has been better for women than it has ever been. It's not perfect, but nothing in the world is, and whatever problems are still associated with it seem to be decreasing each year. Female protagonists are a thing. Well-rounded female characters are a thing.

Most of the arguments here are just beating a dead horse at this point or pointless arguing over the tiniest of things. If anyone has a reasonable point to make beyond this, I'd be glad to hear it.

Right now I think MOST people, including feminists, do not believe that will happen.

The larger issue isn't that we will backslide so much that we will get content (I forgot the proper word) with what we have and no longer change the system for the better or do so an incredibly languid pace.

As with many cultural movements in our history... things were improving and perhaps without the movement we could have still achieved the same goals... But, how long would it have taken otherwise?

Mind you, I don't personally think our current state in videogames was made thanks to direct feminist contributions... but rather just people wanting better games, stories, and just the desire to be a bit more inclusive.

Which honestly might have to do a lot with how used to sexualization everyone is. The Bikini chainmail has, over time, become so typical it has ceased being sexy so what is it if it isn't sexy? Just silly.

At least that is a LOT of how I feel about games... The sex appeal just isn't a factor for me and I feel like it isn't for a lot of people.

Mind you some scholars suggest it is because the internet makes the proliferation of porn and other scandalous material easy and free to access meaning that the need for games to fulfill the male sexual desire has diminished vastly to the point where it has started to become inappropriate.

Scholars also suggest that women have largely a untapped desire that is unfulfilled in our media and is why they are the largest creators of slash fanfiction. I am kind of interesting to hear what women designers would want to do when they make videogames. Since other then Maxis which has a sizable female team... It is so rare.

I personally think that the videogame generation is to old and mature for this crud.

Edit: Found the word.. Complacent! yes!

Question: When has it ever been a thing to use (non-porn, obviously) video games in the place of actual pornography?

Truthfully the answer is no... it was more of a bonus. Especially since most people didn't have access to it.

However, in light of easy accessable pornography, the bonus diminished.

While I might not rate it as over-the-top "sexy", as a straight guy I'd certainly still place it higher on my "list of things I'd like to watch for hours as I play through this RPG" than a male protagonist in the "Codpiece of Lordly Might". (Of course that's assuming that the game is already okay with a little bit of silly, as opposed to something like a realistic war simulator or whatnot). Sure the bonus might be diminished to the point where it is definitely outweighed by things like story, characters, and whatnot, but it's still there. (And I'd be willing to bet that there are at least some women and gay guys who get the exact same bonus from scantily clad male protagonists. :P)

I would put a chainmail bikini high on my list of things that would make me not buy a game. It's a long, long list.

People who read comic books and books are not exclusive. Not in my case, anyway.

The point is that they aren't both category A and that A and B together are the minority

these things don't improve unless they continue to be made an issue. "Better' in this sense is not equal or even good.

Loud Whispers, I don't consider your "source" on the male brain to be particularly valid. It's just an e-book, you could have as easily linked Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.

I personally from FPSs lots of fun, and generally any pvp is enjoyable for me. I didn't get into until way way later though, because the marketing execs went out of their way to exclude women when advertising the stuff.

All that time I could have had fun playing Golden Eye, too.
