Brahma is the creator aspect. A Brahmin is a member of the Brahmin caste or a teacher/priest, sort of like the Jewish Rabbi, as far as I can tell. Brahman is the highest form of reality/the supreme self.

I find Hindu theology hard to follow, to be honest. It's abstract and philosophical.

the Jewish rabbi is just like the Catholic priest where anyone can become one, they just need to study for it. its a religious position and nothing more.

Brahmin on the other hand is part of a caste system. you can't become a Brahmin, you are born into it (Although i imagine the king or emperor or such could uplift someone into this caste). Its more similar to the Japenese Samurais, even though the Brahmins had religious roles and the Samurais militaristic ones.

Gautama Buddha tried to remove the caste system altogether but failed.

These interfaith movements always bother me a little...  The Bahá'í (who established this observance day in 1950) preach unity of humanity, religion, and God - specifically that all major religions have the same spiritual source and come from the same God.

But that's a exclusively monotheistic view, and monotheism is almost exclusive to Abrahamic religions.  Sure enough, the Bahá'í believe Buddha and Krishna were "messengers".  No mention of Taoism or other polytheistic religions.  So this day really isn't a celebration of all religions, just monotheistic ones (and ones which can be dramatically reinterpreted as monotheistic).

The message of unity sounds nice until one realizes they're specifically excluding nonbelievers and polytheists, so it's really just a typical mission statement to evangelize...  Unsurprising given its Abrahamic roots.

Christianity doesn't. It can get a bit weird as far as defence of your country goes - do you love the invader and turn the other cheek, or love your physical naeighbour and defend?

I thought the same thing, but out of curiosity I looked up the day and then the Bahá'í.  They do promote peace and even multiculturalism, along with uniting the world under a single monotheistic superfaith.

I'd love to hear from an actual Bahá'í or similar believer, though.

It doesn't promote war out right but IIRC individuals sent into combat via draft are all good for defending their country, their brothers, and themselves. I think there was somewhere in the bible that said people should follow the laws of your nation like you follow the laws of the bible as long as the laws of your land don't go against/contradict the bible

I found it, and it is in the book of Romans, 13:1, it goes:

"Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God."

This is according to the Jehovah Witnesses online bible, they left me a magazine with a QR code and all, their search function is pretty neat. So, yeah, Christians are supposed to follow the constitution. I like the guys approach on this: They never agree to participate in warfare at all, so no Jehovah Witness is forced to kill another for whatever reason. I think there may be others with the same line of thought.

If I am ever conscripted, I'll be a religious objecter and hopefully be assigned a job that doesn't involve combat.

Also, be careful with the JW Bible; I think it has some fairly fundamental differences, although you might not see them.
