In my day, we didn't use these pansy keyboards.
We used toggle switches to set the bits each word, like real men.
And didn't put up with no girly punch cards either.

I view people who use toggle switches the same way I view fat people whining about not being able to reach the remote control. I only play in the purest, most principled way by manually toggling bits on my processor with a needle.

lol, many of your replies confuse me about stats of dwarfs but then again my friend calls me horribly inefficient.  I cannot get buy with out Therapist if how you say you assign dwarves individually is true.  It existed when I started DF so i've just always used it.  I mean, how long must it take to assign mass jobs.  Everyone smooth, no one haul.  Every one haul don't do anything else, Every one build wall/floor now.  I'm was constantly changing my group of 50 or more idlers when I played, and generally only had one or two dwarves doing each specific job.     Havnt played in a long time and was thinking of doing another fort but I wont be able to play with out Therapist, I hope its updated soon.

Yeah, um, we (non-Therapists) don't do that.  We tend to leave the labors alone most of the time, after the initial assignment upon arrival of each migrant.

Once upon a time dwarf therapist prevented me from giving up on the game. It is true you can play without it but it is like digging a hole with a spoon instead of a backhoe or at the least a shovel.

I used therapist when I first started playing DF, but for a few weeks was having problems where DT wouldn't connect (turned out to be a race condition, which was solved by writing a script to open both in the proper order...) and was forced to learn the in-game way to do it...and now, I use it almost more than DT. DT is handy when I get a new wave of migrants and want to quickly see who has what skills (military, etc.) but my issue is that I can't see the dwarves' relationships in it. So even if I find someone who looks good for my military, I still have to go back to DF and check their family (I try not to enlist anyone with a spouse or kids at least early on in a fort) and then add them to the military.

One note on changing jobs for dwarves - shift enter turns on/off all labors in a category, so it makes it easy to, say, make a hauler. Or not a hauler. And if anyone dares idle, I just go in and give them more work to do. It takes a little bit, but it does prevent me from having the 50 idlers issue...because even when I had over 150 dwarves, I only ever had idlers in the single digits.

I did start playing with a tileset, though, and have never had to learn the ascii. I'm not sure if I'll just wait on installing the new release or if I'll just bite the bullet and try to learn it all at once (hopefully once the major bugs have been resolved). We'll see...I want to let my current fort come to its natural end (we're down to 25 beards and haven't had a wave of migrants in FOREVER...I did just disallow all jobs for my mayor, though, so he has conducted meetings...) and try an evil biome, since I've only ever done easy ones.

I'm sorry your husband had a strange mood and ended up making a useless trinket out of useless materials without gaining any experience in the process.

It's like you're faced with a set of stairs and an escalator. DT is using the escalator. Vanilla is the stairs, right? NO! Vanilla is looking at the stairs and escalator and going "Pff! Wusses!" and deciding the climb the outside of the building to your floor and break in a window.
funny I view it more like DT is the escalator while the vanilla interface is more like driveing a hook through your scrotum (lady's pick some other sensitive part) and hauling yourself to the next floor via pully and rope attached to said hook.  The second option may be more dwarfy but its still painful as hell.

That said I'd probably give up DT if something similar to the dfhack's DT light plugin was enabled through a noble's screen.  A nice list of dwarves with all their skills and enabled labors listed and easy ability to toggle them on and off.  DT would still be nicer for some tasks but the dfhack option was at least displayed in a userfriendly way.

I've done it both ways and could take or leave Therapist. If I'm truly interested in organizing my dwarves and I don't have Therapist installed, I nickname people based on the job I assign them. Miner 1, Miner 2, Mason 1. That kind of thing. It can get tedious, but once you have that name set, you can handily refer back to them whenever needed, and ignore the majority of the Fortress when tabbing through.

Tried Therapist once for 15 minutes, saw that I don't want to use it to make the game any easier, and haven't used it ever since. ;)

My system of assigning labour seems to be slightly unique. On immigration/adulthood, every dwarf in one of my forts is assigned to a military squad named something like "haulers" or "masons" or "craftsdwarves"... you get the idea. Every dwarf squad has the same labours (exception being craftsdwarves). I do this primarily because I want them all in leather to avoid discarded socks, and seeing as you always have several dwarves of a certain skillset doing the same set of jobs, I figured what the heck. It also lets me prioritise haulers in my human dwarven wave attacks against the FB that just slaughtered my champion Militia Commander.

Thing is, this would be near impossible very, very boring without Therapist. I'd have to go through a migrant wave, take note of which dwarf I want doing what based on their skills/my needs (while constantly checking back to the military screen to see what my needs are), and then I'd have to go through the squads on the military screen, manually scrolling past hundreds of names for each dwarf I assign, since, y'know, the game takes you back to the very top of the list each time.

What is the point of doing it the vanilla way over using therapist?
The way I see it, DT is a UI upgrade, plain and simple. It doesn't directly affect gameplay in any way, it doesn't turn your cats into goblin-murdering superbeings, it just makes the game smoother and more user-friendly.

Although, despite this small wall of text, I've been playing DF2014 anyway. But still, having Tharapist back would be nice.

Coping without therapist is hard.
I've been just labeling my male migrants conscripts and female migrants slags as they arrive. I really miss mass dwarven conscription and labor. I am so used to throwing 100 bodies at a problem until either casualties become too high or the issue is resolved. 300 zombies in the stairwell, plug the hole with corpses. Trees littering the landscape, mass cut. Need to dig a magma piston, 100 picks...

Exactly,  why wait for your 3 wood cutters to chop down that forest when you need  hole NOW and the trees are blocking you from digging, or maybe you need 100 new beds...for...some reason, and you want it quickly!
I will say in my 3 grand forts I have done (lots of villages died out) I've never really cared much about what they like or don't like,  statues, mist, good food/rooms, seems to keep them happy enough.

I initially learned how to play without DT so I'm getting used to it. Haven't gotten to a mature fort yet though.

I hope when Toady eventually gets to an interface development arc that we get some kind of table-like similar to DT.
