The number one task for the Therapist for me is when I want to engrave something and turn off engraving on all the non-legendary engravers. And then later turn it on again so they can keep smoothing. Other than that, I hardly use it.
Though it is sometimes handy to see what you've got.

I view people who can't get by without DT the same way I view fat people whining about having to walk to the bus. Yeah, walking is hard, it's not that hard. That being said I have a really laid back attitude when it comes to assigning labours. 'Does the fort need anything right now? No? Well then, you people get to go do whatever until further notice.' If you're more ocd about that kind of thing I suppose I understand your pain.

That's because you play in a certain way.
I like to specialize my dwarves and I don't want the skilled ones going around hauling random shit. In all my forts, I have one or a few dedicated dwarves for any important profession.
But sometimes I want to clean up all the shit strewn around from the last 4 sieges.
Or I want to build something quickly.

Therapist allows me to enable everything on everyone with a couple clicks. Manually enabling all the hauling labors on 30 dwarves with the in-game interface doesn't match my idea of fun. Not even remotely.

It is that hard.

My forts are always well organized. For example, I used to make soldiers out of most promising dwarves, considering their physical attributes, so in future they'll grow into killing machines. With therapist it takes few clicks and they're properly sorted by strength, agility, or whatever. To do the same in-game I have to check every single dwarf. Lets say that checking it takes 10 seconds, with 100 dwarves it's 1000 seconds = 16m 40s.

It's not that I always take the shorter patch, for example, I never used danger rooms, because I consider it an exploit. And arranging live training is fun.

Of course I could draft some random useless dwarves and do well, but that's not a solution. DF lacks a general ability to sort, filter, and display the results in a human-friendly form.

I had dwarf therapist for a while, and never found it that useful; it was nice being able to view the attributes of a dwarf numerically, and mass change jobs, but attribute sorting never really bothered me that much, and I'd just sort migrants the moment they came in anyway, which took about 10s per migrant (no useful skills, go get an axe, start milling and brewing, otherwise make sure specialised skills are enabled).

DFhack on the other hand...

Yeah, it's just a hassle without therapist to manage jobs. DT is less clicks, better UI, more information quicker. Managing 100 dwarves without it is a lot more clic-grind-fest (and I don't enjoy that).

you guys are so spoiled.  seriously, just pause the game, collect data on your dwarves as they come in or are born, then assign labors (or take notes to assign once they turn 12).

it works.

Heh, as I said I totally see how the current interface is fucking awful for microing your dorfs in any kind of meaningful way, I'm just being silly. :)

As someone that'll probably never use DT on principle, though, I'd love to see someting akin in the form of an actual dorf noble to screen immigrant and assign labours optimally as needed and instructed. In addition to a better system for doing it manually, of course.

In my day, we didn't use these pansy keyboards.
We used toggle switches to set the bits each word, like real men.
And didn't put up with no girly punch cards either.

I view people who use toggle switches the same way I view fat people whining about not being able to reach the remote control. I only play in the purest, most principled way by manually toggling bits on my processor with a needle.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow dwarf is either a fool or a coward. Whoever can not take care of themself without that law is both. For a wounded dwarf shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

I really just just used Phoebus tileset and DFhack for periodic mass-deletions of all goods marked for dumping -- all the tattered clothes that pile up and start making my FPS slow down. I did try Therapist but it felt... Off. I really just grab whatever idle units are around if I need a particular job done, and have recently started using the vanilla manager to restrict the skill level allowed to work in particular workshops. With migrants I screen them with V and they call fall in three catagories: "Draft" for potential military units, hauler, and craftsman. Hauler usually make up the idlers in the later part of the fortresses life that I'm able to grab them and put them to work.

Workshop profiles lads.
Q over workshop and P I think(you need a manager in nobles screen). Set minimum allowed skill to whatever level you want. Allows you to make everyone a mason and mechanic for wall building and trap stuff but only allows your skilled workers to make the goods. Works for most professions.
I pretty much just enable all skills on everyone as they enter the map (except farming, plant gathering, hunting, mining, fishing and medical labours) and just use workshop profiles.
Shift + (...whatever the enable key is) to enable entire labor categories.

Haven't figured out how to quickly find the most skilled military/civilian dwarfs yet. A little more information on the (u)nit list would be lovely, lots of blank space there.

Therapist is a million times quicker though...

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

I use a lot of DFhack utilities but without search functions. I hate not being able to search when selecting specific items for stockpiles and  I keep getting stacks of one goddamned potato because I can't find which of these new migrants entered the map with farming enabled and keeps getting in the way of my professionals.

I'm very OCD about managing my dwarves labors properly. EVERY dwarf is assigned and ranked in their labors by their aptitude for those labors, divided up and burrowed based on propensity for tantruming, aptitude for each type of weapon combat etc. Each hour I play I switch out and change labors for dwarves between 10 to a hundred times depending on what I am doing and where I am in the fortress's set up. I constantly changed and tweak the various labors based on what projects I am working on, monitor happiness of every dwarf etc. Trying to play without dwarf therapist after the first big 30+ migrant wave arrives just isn't worth it to me. I got about two hours into sorting out that wave, realized I wasn't even half done and decided to give up on the fortress.

I can do without it, but Therapist is a huge convenience.  I'm really looking forward to being able to create specialists again.

As it is, having x dwarves assigned to one profession just makes one thing sure:  the least skilled & slowest dwarf will always be the one to make that item.  :P

Once I get past about 30 dwarves, I just disable the Hunters and let the rest do whatever they want.  As long as they have a meeting area, they're mostly harmless.
