That's it... I admit it, I can't play without therapist.
Sorry.

Shameful display etc

yep, I don't even know how to do it without therapist.  I do know though, that I will hate it, much like all of the vanilla interface.  Not gonna bother playing until it comes out.

In fact, we should really say, that beards are born with babies.  Since beards are sentient it is quite possible they style themselves or even that they grow styled.
I'm totally convinced dwarven babies are born with beards. How those get braided, combed or shaved before birth is one of the arcane dwarven mysteries.

Same.
I feel a bit guilty for not testing anything and relying on other people's work, but I can't really play without therapist and dfhack.
I could play without dfhack, except for digv and autodump.

I really appreciate the effort you guys are putting into bug-testing and all the awesome add-ons.

I had the same problem, so I looked it up.

You have to use 'v' which I think pauses the game, highlight over or near a dwarf, and select labor. Then using + and -, and not arrow or other keys, select the labor or sub-branch of labor you want that dwarf to do.

You can also use 'u' to see your idle dwarves, and then 'c' to center in like that, and then once centered, then start from 'v' as written above.

All in all, Dwarf Therapist cuts the time tremendously.

I can deal, but it's a bit of a bore.  I'm also not a fan of ascii, but I can tolerate it.  So I'm just basically futzing about with the game but not being too serious about it until those things are up and going.  I fail at that stuff forever, so I'm unfortunately waiting for 40.02 version since I can't do it myself.

Face the horrors of setting the labors for each dwarf one at a time.

I've never actually used Therapist. There were a couple of older utilities I liked for job toggling, Dwarf Foreman and later Dwarf Manager, but I never upgraded to Therapist because it did too much other stuff. Then when DF2010 was released, Dwarf Manager never got updated because there was no point, so I just stopped using job managers.

Yeah, the other things Therapist does (skill measurements, aptitudes, etc.) were all firmly in the "nice to have" category, but my "must haves" were the ability to immediately identify new migrants and assign them skills/permit them to use existing skills.

Going dwarf to dwarf is enough to drive me nuts in the first year... when that first big wave of migrants comes with 20+... fuhgehdaboutit.  Let alone, there's no way to know how skilled the most skilled X-profession on the map is.  Dwarves apparently love to help the clueless n00b skill, so your Legendary mason will be perfectly content to let Homercles the Dabbler make furniture and other critical items, only coming out for important things, like blocks  :P

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

It is very easy to "install" graphic packs yourself, so if you don't like Ascii you can update in a min. or so.

It's actually not that easy.  Graphics sets modify the raw files, so they have to be rewritten for each new version of DF (or at least, each new version that has new raws).  If you simply overwrite the raw files from v0.40 with a graphics set written for v0.34 it won't work correctly.

When I play without therapist I just use burrows a lot more.

I build workshops with a bedroom around a central dining hall.

Then I make a burrow for each workshop and assign a dwarf or two that will do nothing but that particular job for the rest of their days.

I also make a burrow for military dwarves, they sit and practice martial arts and get pumped up by working disconnected pumps.

The only dwarves that get all-access fort passes are dwarves with high agility that are assigned to hauling duty and can get promoted to mason/engravers, or woodcutter/herbalists.

New migrants wait in a meeting area outside the fort until there is a job opening, they are torn apart by wildlife, or killed by a siege/ambush.

I view people who can't get by without DT the same way I view fat people whining about having to walk to the bus. Yeah, walking is hard, it's not that hard. That being said I have a really laid back attitude when it comes to assigning labours. 'Does the fort need anything right now? No? Well then, you people get to go do whatever until further notice.' If you're more ocd about that kind of thing I suppose I understand your pain.

I...there were many occasions where I forgot that Therapist existed. ._.

...I guess I miss having a number pad? shift equals (for plus) is a little annoying.
