((Sorry, but my character isn't interested in leadership, at all, or I'd get involved in deciding what to do.))
((^ This for me, pretty much.))

Open the battery box.
Try to get everyone to go through the wormhole.

((I'm assuming wormhole travel has been done before in this setting?))

Ask the others if there's anything useful I can do.

[4] Battery box contains batteries, as expected.

...

Wormholes are gravitational anomalies found throughout the system orbiting objects. They function as a two-way connection between spatial locations--passing through one side leads to the other, and vice versa.
Wormholes are usually are set in an orbit around a planet or stellar body. Entering a wormhole requires no special gear or calculations--it seems that wormholes will always exit into a stable orbit.
Many scientists question the mechanics of wormholes, as they seem to clearly violate the conservation of energy and momentum. Some have hypothesized that the momentum is transferred to the star or the wormhole itself, but where the energy goes is uncertain, and the mathematics of it are far beyond your capabilities. Fortunately computers can do most of the surveying work for the crew.

Their origin is unclear although they seem to be perfectly safe if you are prepared for what's on the other side. Wormhole transit allows almost instantaneous travel between stars. However, some wormholes lead into systems with potential hazards such as radiation and heat. Some even lead directly into the corona of giant stars. Look before you leap.

((Others can give you something to do... as far as things go right now, it would help if there was a little more discussion as to where to take the ship.))

Echo the sentiment:

"YEAH, TEAMWORK!" I shout to no-one in particular.

Sleep. Get the rest I need to be a healthy, happy, lonely engineer!

((There is nothing to scan. You can send probes though, but that doesn't necessitate sleeping.))

Well set all sensor for proximity scanning and head to launch control.

Well set all sensor for proximity scanning and head to launch control.

((What... do you do at launch control.

There is a spoiler in the main roll which tells you what craft are available.))

[2] There's not much to be discerned. The ship's parts are so hopelessly twisted and torn apart that it's hard to tell how big the original ship was. You're not even sure what parts of it are supposed to be on the outside and inside. Getting closer to investigate would imply entering the radiation zone, as would exploring the wormhole, so it would be really wise so send a probe to do a flyby before you do anything suicidal.

((The probe is pretty fast and doesn't require you guys to halt everything.))

It appears that the plot tugboats need to be called in.

((Note that for ease of calculation, I've removed the fuel mass from the display and left the deltaV capacity. This should be less excessive info to take in.

Also, for now sensors won't be as useful because your ship has the system cataloged. So don't worry about them. If you want to know more about the planet, simply ask.))

As the good ship Anaxagoras set a course for the wormhole, a great tear in space, where gravity and energy twisted paths in directions incomprehensible to human and machine alike. The blue-pupilled eye in space opened to see them, and as the ship passed through the boundaries it was just as soon in the next system as it left.

The Anaxagoras is now in Octanis Alpha. The computer curiously already has all of the planets logged, although the astronomical (get it?) distances involved will make travelling between them a huge investment in time and fuel.

The first planet is Artosis. A world sheathed in blue EDIT: seas, speckled by snow-white clouds, but with no landmass to be seen. The radiation source appears to be in orbit just over the planet's horizon, although the intensity is steadily dropping off. There is no visual contact with anything from the source's location, so it may be a dark wreckage or a astrophysical phenomenon. Fortunately, the radiation is not intense enough to be a threat to the ship... for now.

The second planet is Gaia. The planet's atmosphere contains significant amounts of oxygen and nitrogen, strong indicators for an Earthlike planet and for life. However, it is so far out of reach that returning to the wormhole would be impossible with your remaining fuel. You might be forced to use a less-than-ideal fuel such as water or methane, with half and 75% the total deltaV capacity of hydrogen respectively.

The last planet is Heracles. It is a gas giant with a weak gravity well, perfect for refueling. It is so far out however than you cannot hope to reach it from here without refueling somehow.

There is also an asteroid belt retained by Heracles, which contains a couple of dwarf planets. These balls of ice are perfect for refueling or mining precious metal.

Grab the key, then get the bone into the science lab for someone else to investigate. A mold that can survive on nothing but dry bone? Most interesting.

[Science!!!: 1] Alas, the mold is nothing special, just a common variety that usually consumes dead matter. In fact this colony is mostly dead, and starts flaking off as soon as you move the bone around too much.

Can we catapult ourselves from Artosis to Heracles, the refuel and go to Gaia?
