They can. Problem is nobody is going to talk to a killer.

Which is the big problem with this. Not knowing who is likely to stab you in the back, at least not immediately, is fun. And, if there's a murder in a city or something, everyone's gonna know who did it.

Maybe they can buy something to "Hide" there status while in towns/cities so people won't know. Obviously it won't work when they go outside the safezones.

I want PK'ing to be a thing to worry about constantly no matter what but also not overdone or impossible to stop/track.

How? Murders go unsolved all the time.

Or you could walk around in the wild then stab a guy in the back when nobody is nearby. The Red, Orange, Green system exists to punish people who kill or steal otherwise you could kill without any down side to it if you wait until nobody is looking.

People will do it either way but at least this way normal players have a chance otherwise murders have an enormous advantage. Pking will always be a problem guilds will pop up that actively murder other players to get gear or individual people will pick off players for easy money.
But the color system means at least you have a fighting chance against it otherwise your helpless against killers.

I'm assuming what you're talking about is quite noticeable. Someone enters the city without it, someone dies, and they suddenly have it? It was likely them.

I don't think any of us are planning to PK anyways...
NPC deception is fun, though.

Not really, your inventory isn't visible on you for all anyone knows you just didn't have it equipped.
Or you bought it, or traded for it.

A guy having an item isn't proof they killed somebody items in MMO's ain't unique thousands of people can have the same 1.

... You want an item that alerts people to you being a murderer, then say, no, people cannot even see it, and say thousands can have it without having done the thing to get it?

What purpose does it actually serve, then?

Huh?

It's not an item, it's a status effect of the game itself. If you commit a crime your name goes orange, if you kill it goes red. It's just like an aura to show your karma. I don't wanna try building a guild without it or it would be impossible to create a trustworthy guild because you'd never be able to prove if your a killer or not.
How can I recruit people for a guild to help people if I can't actually tell if the people I recruit are helping people or killing them and stealing from them?

Okay, this:

If, someone goes into a city without that status.
Someone else is murdered.
And then suddenly, the person has that status.
It's rather obvious that it was them.

You said crimes to unsolved all the time.
Not with this, unless they were on their own.

I don't know why you started talking about an item, so I assumed, for that last post, that the thing was an item.

You mentioned them suddenly having something that a person who just got killed had..... so I responded to that. You mentioned the items first I was talking about a status effect to begin with then you said we shouldn't have it.

No, I said if you get it when you kill someone, then murders in cities would be super-easy to solve.
It's still silly and ruins immersion and gameplay, precisely because you'll always know who is trustworthy and who isn't.

You don't know though it makes it obvious in most cases not all.

For instance in SAO ring leaders of groups of killers never killed themselves, they joint parties and led people off into the wilds away from other people then that persons friends ambushed the party and killed them all.
So the ringleader stayed clean and could continue interacting with people and had her followers do the killing.
Or if you wanted someone killed you hired a red player to do it for you.
It just catches out the thugs and idiots or the people who intentionally kill a lot.

The system had all sorts of loopholes, people could still be killed in safe zones as well.

Or we can say screw SAO and just let people have fun.
This can all be solved by not using SAO, it seems.

Part of the fun is not knowing, ever. Judging people's character, taking precautions.
And, then, if they >know< they're actually killing people, then they could be recruited into kj's thing.
Also, I don't really see many players taking that risk if they >know< they'll be permanently dead of they get killed.
If they don't, it would be safest to assume that suicide would let you out of the game, and everyone would be killing themselves.
That, or they would assume it wouldn't work, and wouldn't want to risk it or kill others unless they're psychopaths.

 :-\

Not knowing has always been the best part.

Introducing a system into a forum game just to match a fake game seems... Bleh.
Especially when it ruins immersion.

Yeah but it's a game..... games always have some system for telling. They have Karma, or status effects, or the game records your kills and you can just look at the characters history. And SAO was just the example, I want a way to tell if a person is a killer or not and since this game does not include charisma or anything like that you either need a status effect or an item thats easy to acquire that will tell you if somebody is a killer.

Not just fakes games, every single real mmo has some system for it.

I mean, it's not like we're actually making an MMO here. We're making an MMO-themed forum game.
