Set up the potted plants in a secluded room, with lots of light. Begin watering them, and check for vermin.
Take one piece of glowing chalk and use it to paint a wolfsbane plant on a blackboard, wearing gloves

Mike: "I think that thing is randomly making things magical... really powerful looking to I think it affected the whole town. Hey, I wonder if we could trap that energy in a confined space and get it more controlled... Could probably use some kind of oven, and then reflect it back with some kind of barrier; if anyone find magic-reflecting bariers or an oven maybe we could try this out?"

"Gentlemen and Gentlewomen, I propose that we suspend testing of the artifact until such time as we determine what just happened. I for one will be attempting to discern the precise effects of this... chalk."

Septimus closely examines the glowing chalk, clears a wide radius from the blackboard and then attempts to write with it.

"No way that can end badly."

Avoid being near the guy writing on the unstable magical crystal.

We should test whether different materials can block it. Someone should go buy a box plated with lead, one with silver, one with gold, etc.

I reserve a chalkboard and use normal chalk to draw a map of the town. Mark down where we were when the cat incident happened, and write "cat reanimated" and the time on the side. Similarly mark down all the places and time of day when something occurred that we know about - that is, we heard about it from the person it actually happened to, not a rumor.

Then I go out and gather information to add to the board.

Gotta love dat normal chalk. The best thing about normal chalk, I think, is how it doesn't glow.

What's your favorite part about normal chalk, Doctor Strudelshaaven?

I always say with so many people around, it is best not to wait for everyone.

Instead, instigate a rule that is someone is not seen for a specified time he will be killed off, in a way the GM sees as fit.

Well, it's a bit to late to start the turn and do other things I need to do, and three is when I usually get home from school. I probably won't kill them off, they'll just go on vacation for an indefinite amount of time in case they come back.

I thought you were going to make anyone who didn't post just do nothing of interest. I didn't have anything of interest to do at this point.
