Barbarians are nice because they are spammable/cheap, hit hard, and are faster than most other heroes, which means that they escape more and close distance better.  The temples are nice because of the ability to instantly buff every hero in your nation via Wrath of Krolm.

Does mean giving up all those other spells, though. Like wither. And wither. That speedy run spell.

... and wither.

Did I mention wither's pretty great? Tangle and/or petrify's nice, too, if you've got the cash for it, but wither's cheap and incredibly crippling. Great spell. Cheap, too. And no need for upgrades to get it.

I guess a map wide buff's pretty nice, too.

Wrath of Krolm is basically like casting the 800 gold "Vigilance" on every single hero you have, for less than the cost of casting it on two people.  Krolm is all about getting a lot of heroes working together and on-command unstoppable offensive power.

Barbarians also have slightly higher intelligence than Warriors of Discord, especially if you have a library set up.  And, as mentioned, they're quite cheap for what they are (and you can have more of them, thanks to the expanded temple roster size).  With a library, they will actually start acting semi responsible and buy equipment and upgrades more often.  As for survivability, they do still like to go nutso on everything, which is a problem...  Thankfully, it's mitigated by their unconsciousness chance, giving them a little "time out" while whatever murdered them wanders off and forgets about them.

Plus, there's that funny little bonus of how the rangers follow after them.  Wizards do it too, on occasion.
They're just not everywhere and capable of stocking up on a doubled short range teleport.

Adepts can actually have up to three teleport skills in the expansion.  Innate teleport short, amulet teleportation, and teleport long.  Needless to say, they're far and away the most mobile heroes in the game.  Most mobile anything in the game.

Nightscar died.  Rrongol?  On the other side of the map.  Url Shekk?  Nah, of course not.  Just some random vampire.

Euchre Junior is spazzing out.  Rogues seem to universally suffer from a rather severe grave dust addiction, which is why they spend all the time they possibly can around tombstones so that they can loot as much of the precious substance as they can before Ardania's magical winds whisk the memorial away.

Junior, however, heard rumors of the motherlode, the big granpappy of all mass graves...  And it was right in this very town.  Indeed, the mausoleum, a magical place where dead bodies go to stay and never vanish into thin air!

Unfortunately for Junior, however, the delicious corpses are locked up on the inside and he's too busy being excited to figure out a way in.

Seriously, he's just standing there like a creep.  I'm pretty sure he's trying to find the gravestones of all the heroes in there, but seeing as those gravestones don't actually exist on the map he's having a bit of a spaz attack trying to path to them.

Krevsin went wandering way out into the wilderness and got dogpiled by Url Shekk (huh huh, geddit?  Dogpiled?  ...yeah, I don't get it either).  His broken body was interred in the mausoleum, where an increasingly frustrated Euchre is still fuming at the walls.

The good news is, Sir Haspen the Ironfist decided to finally rid our realm of the furious beast, Url Shekk (how the blazes did he get over there all of a sudden?)!  The bad news is, he died horribly and is now a mangled, charred corpse.

Also, Url Shekk found the settlement.  We're all gonna die soon.

(The reason he has a reward flag worth 0 placed on him is because reward flags show up as shining stars on the minimap, rather than just the little colored dots that indicate monsters.  This helps me keep track of where the particularly mean baddies are.  Well, if I actually paid attention, that is...)

Luckily for us, however, dear ol' Shekk happened to pick a rather unfortunate (for him) location to assault our settlement.  Namely, right next to the big fuckoff temple of BEAR.

While we've lost a few guardsmen, skeletons and BEAR (not to worry, Darvi was reunited with his corporeal form shortly after this picture was taken), the whole "Url Shekk" problem seems to be under control thanks to the judicious application of BEAR.

While we're waiting for that to sort itself out, I'd like to point out one of the new additions to our town, courtesy of the latest surge of cash and the economic sector renovations that all of said cash was immediately allocated to.

This is a magic bazaar, yet another building added by the expansion.  When the question was asked of the original game; "Why are there only healing potions, and not lots more fantasy RPG style potions?", the answer was "Magic Bazaar".  This pseudo-marketplace serves one purpose and one purpose only, and that is the research and sale of newer and questionably better elixirs.

Unlike healing potions, which each hero can carry up to 5 of at a time (except for rangers under special circumstances, more on that at a later date), a hero can only carry up to one of each type of special potion the bazaar offers.

In the big scheme of things, there are some who question the actual efficacy of building a magic bazaar...  Heroes are incredibly obsessed with buying ALL THE POTIONS, ALL THE TIME, and will frequently make the bazaar their first stop on a shopping spree (potentially spending money that otherwise would have been earmarked for healing potions or armor/weapon), and a few of the bazaar's products are of arguable use (not to mention one-time use, as opposed to weapons and armor upgrades that last until something better comes along).

But, in this case, I figure the heroes are going to get enough money to buy what they need, and I might as well show off the bazaar and all that it can do.  Furthermore, it allows for a very special and very useful building to be constructed, so some people may pick it up purely for that purpose alone.

Aaaand that's that.  This is the last we'll be seeing of Url Shekk, may he rot in the underworld.  Darvi and Chaoticag are dead, again, but their sacrifices were valiant and a couple other cultists picked up the reward anyways so it's all good, right guys?

Anyways, it's good to see the bastard go.  One less thing to actually worry about.

Does it involve earthquakes and chain lightning? Because my elven lounges always seemed to be placed on a tectonic fault zone...

Magic Bazaar...

Personally, I don't think anyone needs other potions than Fire Balm (poisoned arrows on fire? yes please) and Speed Tonic (this way some heroes can actually RUN while running away in fear).

Dirgo Strength just adds a bit of melee damage, Regen elixir, well, regenerates health faster (health potions are still better), Invisiblity potion is applied only while running away (Speed Tonic is enough on its own), and Shapeshift potion... well. It can turn your hero into a demonbear, dryad, medusa and minotaur, and only those last two are rather useful.

Well, this is interesting...   Learn something new every day.

Mausoleums, while fantastic, are somewhat limited in their capacity.  That is to say, a single mausoleum can only hold up to 10 dead dudes before the rest just get chucked in the lake.

Well guess who just got chucked in the lake, guys?  That's RIGHT!  Darvi and Chaoticag, our two highest-ranking cultists of Fervus!

I'd like to take this moment to particularly thank them for their sacrifice, seeing as it was an actual sacrifice.  Also I'd like to congratulate all y'all for dying so damned fast that my poor lil' economy can't pull the funds out fast enough to resurrect your sorry asses.

And yes, four of the people sitting in the mausoleum are Warriors of Discord.

Any chance we're going to get the Moon temple built any time soon?

Yes, but you have to understand that our economy is still quite shaky and I'd very much like to clean out the mausoleum first before putting it up.  Then, once we have a decent enough gold reserve, I'm going to make a trading post out in the wilderness to help bolster our income a bit more, and also get our heroes out and about.  It's all about the money, man.

Well, Euchre's been fixed...  Looks like he finally gave up trying to get into the mausoleum.  Well, not so much "gave up" as "found what he was looking for".

Apparently he'd decided just after Sir Isdar's death that he was going to go pick up some of the shiny loot off the unfortunate knight's body.  Matters were complicated when Sir Isdar's grave was erased and he was instead interred in the mausoleum.  But bail has now been made and paid to the god of the dead, and Sir Isdar walks free in the sunlight world again.

...and was immediately greeted by Euchre Junior, who'd been waiting outside the mausoleum for days just to score 83 gold off of the poor sap knight (apparently, Euchre thought he was still dead).

Satisfied, Junior then stole 53 gold from the magic bazaar and then went inside to pay 40 gold on a tonic.  Economics at its finest.

EDIT:  And then he up and fucking jams his face into Rrongol's ass and yells "KILL ME PLEASE OH BEAUTIFUL JELLY LIZARD" so now I have to pay for him to come back to life, god fucking damn it Euchre!

I think I actually ran into this yesterday, but didn't know if it was something intended or stuff acting up due to one reason or another. Ah well, Not sure what to request next. I mean, bears that throw knives are nice and all, don't get me wrong, but going as the same thing over and over again seems a bit off. I guess I can grab a wizard then.

I guess Mini-Me knew that I secretly wanted to be a necromancer.  But robbing the "rich" to buy stuff for me is also good.

Y'know, right now it seems as if the mausoleum is getting more patronage than the smithy.  Too bad you can't tax the mausoleum, eh?  :P

So other than Url Shekk and Rrongol, any interesting enemies randomly popping in?  Medusa?  Dragons?  A bear in an ill-fitting sweater?
