I did

Rally your Knights, and charge into the city, assault the demonspawn on any exposed flank that is unaware of us and carve a way into the castle.

It won't make a difference- we'll get our men killed and the city will be lost in spite of our valiant, but foolish efforts.

I still think we should fire their camp, free their food & look for the commander's tent. We may even find him with a small guard.

We may be the lord protector, but 20 men won't make much difference when the city's being torn apart. Not unless we apply ourselves well, (like taking the commander by surprise/nabbing something of value from his tent).

Otherwise: do we know of any 'oh shit' buttons the defenders must have forgotten to press? Something that'll flood the streets in magma or something?

You free the elves and set the camp on fire, its all tainted by the Demonspawn anyway. Now you have three hundred half starved naked Elves to take care of...great.

The Battle seems to be still raging in the Capital, You hear the sweet sound of Massed Musket Volleys, followed by the not so sweet smell of sulphur.

Rush in and try to rescue the monarch. Elves can be used as meatshields or if they refuse, they can serve as camp servants once we are clear.

-1 to the Leeeeroooooooooooooooooooooy Jenkins!!!!!!!! Plan.
Assign our squad to guide and guard the elves and head out of the camp for shelter. Have a select few scout for better information.

So I guess they didn't have a commander.

Unless we know of a specific way in that doesn't involve trying to pass through the demon's rampaging army, and also a specific way out that doesn't involve trying to pass through the demon's rampaging army, I am also a -1 to trying to save our liegelord.
Without further information from the GM on what our character actually knows, I'm not willing to lead our men into their slaughter. They have families too.

+1 to getting the elves out of there & to safety.

Also, ask for some volunteers, no more than 6, to go into the city to try and help civilians they find and/or to ascertain the king's fate. The latter, we should caution them, is a suicide run, but just collecting any information would be valuable. Make sure they use the buddy system.
-If it's too dangerous, (roaming hordes of chaff), come back with who/whatever you can. We need you alive.

If we had an army at our backs, sure we could go and be the human's second wind, (though at most it looks like it would be a Pyrrhic victory), but we don't. If our king has trapped himself in a corner, there's no way we're going to dig him out with 20 men.

Except you missed the sounds of muskets - the battle is still ongoing and we just have to get the emperor out, not defeat the demons. Fortune (in this case GM) favours the bold!

The battle is still going but the demons are in the city and felling the towers of the keep. In order to get the emperor out, we'd have to get through the demon's advance lines, (the easy part(read: not easy)), and then, once we're also trapped in the crumbling keep with the beleaguered defenders, we have to break through their lines from the front(read: not going to happen). If it were so easy, they'd have already done it- you propose 20 men is enough to break the demon's army?

The elves aren't fighters. They're civilians, and broken civilians. You try to herd them towards the city, they're going to panic & flee, not march forward -unarmed-, and die to be your meatshields. That's not what we do with civilians.

They're civilians- we're sworn to protect them, (even if their kingdom has fallen to our mutual enemy). Even if saving the weak & innocent doesn't appeal to you, we can't afford to shun friends, not with a foe such as this.

Unless we know they have one of those, we have to assume it doesn't exist. And if it does, the emperor doesn't need our help to utilize it.
