+1 to GrizzlyAdamz' comments.
If there is a secret tunnel, the Emperor knows of it, and he will use it. But he's probably dead. Soon to be dead, anyway.

3 against one, the elves are going to get us killed. We don't have the supplies, nor the equipment to feed and/or relocate them. Besides, where would we go. They're just going to give us away.

I vote we torch the camp, if we haven't done so already. Just let the elves go or tell them to wait. I'm pretty sure the emperor is attempting a break out. We should come halfway.

The Elves aren't exactly friends of the Empire, especially since the Empire has denied the refugees to come to the kingdom. Most of the Elves and their King in Exile is in a Kingdom to the North, trying to garner enought roops for an assault against the Demonspawn.

So, are you suggesting that our army would be generally indifferent to the elves we have just released? If so, send them on their way, and go on our own way (which is still in a direction AWAY from the horde of demonspawn.) Perhaps we should look to our allies for support? Maybe gofind some wse men / wizards / holy men / magic artifact of demonslaying? In other words consider methods of leveling the playing field.

Leveling the playing field is presumably what every sane ruler of the continent is trying to do right now - unless the demonspawn have any alliances that we do not know of. So while it sounds neat and grand, I somewhat doubt there to be a easy way out of this mess - or the aftermath of it.

So... scout into the city, maybe we can find people that are of use to us. Leave the tree-huggers behind - we are not some kind of honourbound paladin (or so I do hope). Besides, this is bay 12 - leaving the elves to die - thiiis is the obvious thing to do.

Sounds like we should ride north and speak with the elf-king. If the demonspawn have laid waste to both our kingdoms, we need to rally just as much as they.
We can leave a handful of men here to watch, bring word to us and if the emperor escapes, to tell him our plans before heading to inform us.

Question: what are our holdings? How vast are our lands/armies? Personally, not the kingdom, but our fief.

Burn the camp, and bring the elves with us back to our holdings, if they will not come then leave them.

I clicked on a thread entitled Lord Protector, but the actual contents thereof seem to have been switched around with a thread called Lord Runner Away. What foul forum sorcery is this!? I suck at fantasy scenarios, but +1 to any suggestion that involves active attempts at Protectoring. We're behind the enemy lines, there's active resistance still. Take 'em from the rear. Go get 'em, tiger.

Besides, a city sack involves most troops losing discipline for plunder and rape. I really know fuck-all about demonspawn morale, but they are not expecting us. Give the crappy chaff weaponry to the elves and tell them to avenge their pain and loss, if they're worth a damn. Hit the  catapults, which will be behind the other forces, take them and tell the elves to man them, give them a little less torsion and spot the results.

Depending on if our action has any results, press it, else ride away on our horses. Give it a chance first.

This:
Quote
Ah yes, Blackmourn, the Pride of Ferras. The Capital was a sprawling behemoth a boil on the face of the land it was build upon.

Makes me think it's a rather large city. Which means the invading force must be gigantic if they're still demolishing the keep while the city's burning. If we go in with 20 men, we'll probably run into undisciplined raiding parties that both outnumber us & outgun us- reaching the catapults will probably involve meeting resistance. Good idea with the chaff weapons/armor, but I don't think it'll take with the elves, given their current state.

If we leave now and have some of our men stay behind to keep watch & catch up with us, we'll be saving valuable time to get further away. If we give attacking a try, we may not make it out, and I very much doubt we'd make it out with all our men.

We just hit their Siege Camp, so we can estimate their size already. They used devilry to blast open the walls, not a protracted siege.

The elves were being used as food, so there's meat on them bones still. Meat that can heft weapons now. Give 'em weapons, tell them this is their last chance for revenge before the end, nothing but devastation exists in the countryside, no escape. They've been in cages watching their friends being flossed from between fangs. What do they know? Just because they're crazy, doesn't mean they're harmless when equipped. Could be more deadly now.

Yeah, but they also swept aside opposition once they'd breached the walls, while simultaneously spreading through the city and lighting it on fire.

They used devilry to blast open the walls, not a protracted siege.
You say that as if it's a good thing.

The elves are half-starved, currently naked and have been captured for months. I don't think going into a losing battle against their horrifying captors will be their first choice, not for most of them. Nor would they be the best soldiers...

I'm more inclined to save the civvies because we don't seem particularly fond of our liege-lord; we weren't thrilled about our promotion, there hasn't been an inkling of a relationship between the two of us and he's an emperor that's refused refugees & has Blackmourn as his capital. Sounds like a pleasant fellow.

Lord Escaper we are not. Let's do some Protectoring. There's a battle out there, and if we are not in the mood for our office, then the title of the thread needs to be updated to the fact that we resigned from duty.

Yes, that's a good idea. Let's do our duty and protect helpless refugees, use that as an in with the Elf guy to the north, and get vengeance on the demonspawn. Let's not get our men killed in a completely pointless bit of vanity where we trade our duties in for some half-baked attempt at glory.

I'm pretty sure, from the fact that our office was given to us by the Emperor, that no Emperor means no office. Just a random wandering nobody without the person from whom our authority flows. Especially if he has no heirs after his city is levelled. The Elves are not subjects in our Empire

OP suggests that our "appointment" to that position, which happened like a minute before we came to the city, was Bad News. No ceremony, no swearing in, no fanfare - just a rider beating a near dead horse and the grim news that someone died and you're the best they have to fill the bill. By the way, protecting DOES NOT mean suicidal charges into vastly larger and more powerful forces. Our head will have a hard time protecting from the end of that spear we are about to find ourselves riding rather uncomfortably. We have a lot more to protect (maybe) than a burned out husk of a boil on the continent, already in the grip of death. So, let's go from here, consider our options, and protect what remains of our once proud empire. Or go out in a blaze of glory now, and appoint the next poor sap Lord Protector of the Ashes.
