Survarium is the spiritual successor to STALKER and is looking mighty fine right now.
That's fine and dandy, but that isn't going to change the fact that I desperately want STALKER 2. The wound hasn't had a chance to heal yet, and I remember the whole fiasco where people thought Bethesda was buying the rights to STALKER.
Face it, no matter how desperately you want it, Stalker 2 isn't going to happen. It's been quite a while, and the Stalker team has moved on to pastures new (but still familliar) and so should you. Whining about how desperately you want Stalker 2 isn't going to do anything.

Oh, and "The wound hasn't had a chance to heal yet"? For crying out loud, it's been over a year since Stalker 2 was officially cancelled and almost a year since Bethesda "got the rights".

I know, it was a joke. You know, the things humans do to ellicit laughter or amusement out of fellow humans?

@2up

Calm yo tits, yo.

Fallout 4 would be awesome if it was in some hip location like Lithuania or Estonia or anywhere in Central/Eastern Europe, but they built their lore on North America, and furthest away it may go is gonna be either former Mexico or Canada.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is one of my most treasured game series. I've been utterly addicted to another playthrough of the STALKERSOUP mod which just gets better with each update. I'm still pretty devastated that we'll likely never see STALKER 2 and also rather baffled why there hasn't been any real attempts to emulate STALKER or even heavily influence off it.

It's pretty much inevitable that a Fallout discussion will bring up the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series since they're so often compared. I personally believe the comparison is foolish since they're both present different ideas while using different methods.
Might be worth it to resurrect the old STALKER thread for further discussion. Gives me an excuse to post love letters to the AN-94.  :P

On the actual topic of Fallout I may have been a little too hard on Bethesda. I personally believe that "The Pitt" expansion/DLC made up for a lot of the shortcomings of Fallout 3 and if we saw 4 set in a similar style (Industralpunk?) it could very much work. I loved the characters, motivations and the society they built in that expansion.
They would still have to completely overhaul how they handle level scaling. The current implementation is the worst I've seen in the RPG genre. NV improved on it a lot and made sense in the setting (NCR and Legion preparing for war) and was largely acceptable.

The Pitt was in my opinion a definite improvement over the base FO3 storyline, but it ultimately felt to me as if Bethesda was trying to write something which the fans would perceive as a storyline similar to the themes present in the original fallout games. This sort of failed in my opinion, as it seemed blatantly obvious Bethesda tried to make a dark, gritty story with not much personality in an attempt to replicate past games. Granted, it was fine by itself, but still felt stifled by the Bethesda writing team.

Granted, I could be completely talking out of my ass here. So feel free to disregard it if it makes no sense.

Agreed. It felt like they were trying too hard and really didn't know how to make an ambiguous story. I always sided against Werhner (spelling? meh) because I hated him, not because it was an interesting moral choice. When the "choose your side" moment is between "slavers" and "babykillers" (and let's be perfectly honest, that's what it would have led to), you just pick whichever one you hate less and shoot everyone else.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

funny, it does not read as a joke. :P

anywho, the only story from the new fallouts that I liked was the one from New Vegas. The Pit was on a good track, but it was far too short for any real development to take place.

The Pitt wasn't without problems. The whole baby thing seemed forced, unnecessary and just added so it would appear more "adult". I did like how they didn't mention the history of American slavery since that comparison always feels extremely forced.

I really wish they explored slavery a lot more. The focus of The Pitt should have been whether it is true that a technology backwards society needs to have slavery or no civic freedoms to develop itself. It could have further explored class disparity, survival and the dis/advantages of liberty in a hostile environment. The expansion would build towards a non-avoidable full civil war which the fate of the city is decided.
It could have benefitted from more factions vying for control of the city each representing varying forms of governance such as socialists, loyalists (to the current despot), feudalists, libertarians. The player would have to choose which faction they align themselves with and either help the "progression" of the city or it's inhabitants and the all important decision on what to do with the slaves.

I think the setting has massive potential for some truly interesting subjects ... but perhaps I'm giving the Bethesda writers way too much credit.

well, bethesda writers do have a tendency to create really interesting settings with tons of potential for interesting stories, questions and gameplay in general, and then not using all of said potential.

If they go to Boston, I'm guessing they'll probably have android slaves and such (remember the runaway android from fallout 3). Maybe they'll retread the whole slave subplot part of morrowind with androids? Who knows. Well, they might be curious if people would would treat them differently than beastmer, although the different world setting could confuse whatever they're expecting to get out of it.

Well, I was going to not say anything. But, thought I'd put my 2 cents in and go a bit of a neutral stance.

There are very few AAA companies that make open world, sandbox style games that are singleplayer. We have Grand Theft Auto...X3 Terran Conflict (is that considered AAA? I assume so) and...the Bethesda games. Can't think of anything else. But it isn't much if I forgot or don't know of other games.

There is actually probably very few game companies in general that make open world, sandbox style singleplayer games. Though I think indie games do tend to go that route a bit more. I just can't think of any off top of my head right now.

And for the PC versions of Bethesda games. There is even far less open world, sandbox singleplayer games that have massive modding support. I know X3 does, and I think GTA does (I don't have it though). The modding tools are so good, you can change the entire game itself pretty much. Like Skyrim with the tropical mod for aesthetics or any major gameplay mod really. Or Oblivion with Nehrim for a total overhaul. Plus all the Fallout 3 and New Vegas mods that you can get.

I'm pretty sure that is why Bethesda is so popular, and why the games keep selling on PC for so long. People still play Oblivion and to a degree, Morrowind, on the PC, just because of the mods.

Anyone can come up with an "interesting" idea for something. It's really fucking easy, and if we measured game companies by the potential of what they could make every game company would be considered amazing. Hell, I have at least ten potentially interesting ideas. Where's my appreciation?

It's true though really the only reason Bethesda is popular on the PC is because of mods, if they didn't give out modding support I guarantee you that any PC interest would soon drop out. But they do make quite a lot of money from the console crowd, and that's why they're blatantly trying to shift their focus to them. Whether or not they're really going to make money from the console crowd in the long run is questionable, but they seem fixed to try their best at it anyways.

But the basic idea for Fallout 3 was pretty terrible. Irradiated water troubles 200 years after the war, when you've dealt with a water problem like 100 years prior in the West, and there were places like Vault City and NCR following that. It's like the writers had no idea for a plot so they went with a mish-mash of plot points from FO1 and 2 that make no sense with the time and place they decided to go with.
