I haven't read the thread, but i will say that sizable immigrant populations appear to be one of the better ways of getting people to consider the welfare of other countries as much as their own, with pull. It's unlikely to be perfect, my misgivings about bay12 as an example, but it helps. It's in the consciousness, but i want more then a concert raising food aid (and undeserved pr) here. We need better then another 90's.

I'm not sure. The US spend a notoriously tiny amount of cash in foreign aid (once you've removed the arms shipment to Egypt and Israel), despite being full of immigrant. Sweden do the opposite, but I don't think they've got more migrants.

That's just looking at government aid, though. Individual citizens in the US give more per capita to charities than the citizens of any other nation. Part of that is just that Americans are pretty wealthy compared to most, but that can't account for all of it, since there are a few nations who's citizens are wealthier, yet they give less to charity.

Actually I think it might have to do with the different social structures. The standard of living in many european countries is arguably higher on average than in the US, but people expect the government to distribute welfare. There is a bit less of a charity culture here because people are legally entitled to healthcare and welfare benefits. In my experience Americans think "This is wrong - I need to do something", while Europeans tend to think "This is wrong - the government needs to do something". This is a massive generalization of course, but I think there is some truth to it.

Government aid also makes people to not want to give money to charity because they already do so by paying taxes. Obviously a lot of people don't think this way but it certainly plays a role.

On the other hand, i think it's brought attention to a few foreign conflicts, though I'd need an American to give confirmation on this. On the prior hand, i did put "with pull" there for a reason.

Yeah, so I'm just going to respond to this and bow out.

Simply put, the age of a text does nothing whatsoever to make it more valid.

I wasn't saying it made it more valid--rather that I was trying to bring up the existence of secondary texts, which tend to skew hermeneutics of religious documents significantly.

Can I get a pick on which conflicts you are refering too? I don't know all of them off the top of my head.

Well, the obvious one is Iran, but I'm fairly certain others have had more notice paid then otherwise, though i can't remember any right now.

The Us didn't bring attention to those conflicts. They caused them.

Yes, but prior to those conflicts i thought more attention then usual was paid to Iran, beyond that it might otherwise have?

Ohh yeah did Iran end up completing their nuclear program?

I am the only one who thinks it was actually a very good move for them to finish it since nuclear arms is the only way you have any geopolitical power.

Well they make people pay attention when you say something. That's not necessarily a good thing, as N. Korea is finding out.

Yeah but N. Korea is only able to be so crazy because of their arms (admittingly it is because of their artillery and the fact that they can wipe out entire south Korea cities before anyone could stop them)
