Year 104, part 1
Imp, evil mastermind

Everything has been going to shit since I retired from village elder to focus on my ogres and death-dealing contraptions.  Now that we have attracted the attention of the hive-men, we can't get a moment's peace.  Our warriors are dropping like kobolds and everyone keeps disappearing. All it takes to take back the reins is a few threats to feed kobolds to the ogres.  I get the feeling that nobody else really wanted to be in charge.

Granite
No sooner had I taken charge when a drow caravan arrives.  They brought next to nothing, but at least they had the war beasts I demanded last year.  My of ogres army continues to grow.  Soon no one will dare oppose me.

I am undertaking a grand reorganization of the village.  All of the less useful kobolds are now officially the peons that they always were in fact.  I am assigning 10 of them to a bola-thrower squad and 10 to using slings.  Training the bola-throwers is proving difficult, since the bone bolas actually kill the live targets.  Perhaps I should set up the hated statue as a target.

I have decided to reinforce our fortifications.  I ordered the workers to finish the perimeter wall and restart construction on the death-cliff. 

I was happy when I heard that one of our peons was undertaking a grand construction, but I have no idea what to do with his creation.  I don't think I would dare put black powder in something made of wood, but he assures me that it will work.  Perhaps I will start training up some blowgunners.

Slate
The doc alerted me to a strange dead body today.  It had been completely drained of blood.  I had never heard of this before, but one of our drow prisoners claims that this is evidence of a "vampire."  With a promise of freedom, he told me everything he knew.  Apparently these creatures drink the blood of the living and gain incredible and immortality.  And what's more, you can gain this power by drinking their blood.  I have always dreamed of drinking a potion of eternal youth, and this is my chance.  I must find this creature and extract its blood. 

According to the drow, these creatures neither eat nor sleep.  Using this information, I put each kobold to questioning until I found the one that did not complain about sleeping in the dormitories.  I dare not reveal my hand yet, but I am keeping an eye on him beginning construction of a vampire-juicing contraption.

In other news, kobolds keep disappearing in the caverns.  I sent nav and the other swordsbolds in to slay them.  Their welded mithril swords are more than up to the task of slicing through bronze.  They succeeded in killing 2 of them, but are rather disobedient and refused to kill the rest.  My attempts to order them back down led to Nav going down alone, and was tragically mauled by a pair of giant rats.  I was able to save him, but his leg was badly wounded.  Most of my swordsbolds were wounded in the process.  This does not bode well.

Felsite
The cursed hive-men are attacking again, just as two caravans approach.  The death cliff is not finished, but it is in better shape that before.  I order everyone inside and the gates sealed as soon as the caravans get inside.  I order my ranged squads to man the battlements, which Sir Blue takes to mean charge into the caves to take on the siege alone.  He will be missed.  At least the perimeter wall is finished.

Okay, this is what the death cliff is for.  I manage to trap most of the demons on the cliff, and the few that got through are dispatched by an ogre and our one able-bodied swordsbold.  Quite a few of the creatures fell from the cliff, along with an ogre and a couple of kobolds.  The crippled creatures are still fighting each other now.

The vampire juicer has been completed, and I have ordered him to inspect the spike traps.  He decides to practice instead.  I worry that he may be on to me.

Nice read Imp, but let me get this straight... Blue has died for a third time? That bold has no luck.

You also have posted the thumbnails of your images... which are tiny :)  (need to delete the s of the end of the URI to see them in all their glory.)

Yes, Blue charged to his death as soon as the siege appeared.  You are not doing so well, either.  You have been out of commission since your leg got maimed.  Kobolds really are dropping like flies.

Year 104, part 2
Imp, Evil Mastermind

Early Summer
The elves finally tire of being trapped within our walls, and decide to leave through the death-cliff just as a second wave of hive-men attack.  Watching them fight and fall to their death off of the cliff is quite amusing.  While their guards fight, the merchants go insane and abandon the remainder of their goods.  The diplomat won't be happy, but I hope they still bring the beasts I ordered.

As usual, our warriors are completely impotent.  I have decided to disband most of our military.  I assign a small group of bolabolds under Goat, and a couple of
swordsbolds to assist Nav if he ever gets out of bed. 

We will rely on my mechanical defenses and war beasts for defense until I can create my undead army.  I have substantially expanded our mechanical defenses and amassed quite the beast army.  At current count, we have 20 ogres, 8 drakes, 3 colossal elephants, a sauropod, and a truly vicious dragon raptor.  That and the countless cage traps I have had installed should protect us for now.

Late Summer
I have figured out why Nav wouldn't get out of bed.  Apparently our witch doctor got himself killed.  Once I appointed a new one and built him a crutch, he started hobbling around again.  He is slower than he was, but he should be his normal death-dealing self before too long.

A human and gnome caravan arrive just as a small goblin ambush attack, and they manage to find yet another hole in the perimeter wall.  They will have to fend for themselves.  With the help of some of my war beasts, the humans fight them off.  The gnomes are slaughtered, but you can't save them all.  I trade a massive number of clay bullets for all of their clay junk to melt it down.  We have an unbelievable number of clay bullets.  I don't know where they are all stored, but the humans and elves sure love them.

One of our craftsman becomes possessed and makes an artifact grate.  I put it up next to the waterfall for everyone to admire while they eat.

My plan to use the power of the vampire's blood is proving more difficult than I expected.  My first attempt at a juicer failed: the vampire was rather hesitant to stand on top of the impaling spike, and he swam out of the well before I could get enough blood in the water.  No one gained unnatural powers.  I am creating a new, improved juicer.  This time he won't be able to escape.

A strange creature has attacked the fort.  Our scouts say that it emits an aura of kindness and giving.  I think I will imprison it and utilize its aura.  It should help keep the masses complacent once I start harvesting them.  Unfortunately, my war raptor has other plans.

Early Autumn
Another beast has arrived, and this one is far more terrifying.  It flies, and emits deadly dust.  I fear this may be the end.  I sound the alarm and order the pathways to the battlements walled off, and pray to the great Cavernshadow to lend my warbeasts strength.  It flies over our walls and attacks the front gates, emitting bursts of dust that causes my beasts' entire bodies to rot.  That does nothing to deter them, and they pummel the titan to death.  One of the war drakes rips its head off, but not before being severely wounded by the dust. I have built a tome for him.  If he lives, I will adopt him as my personal guard.

With that dealt with, I turn back to my other plans.  I rebuild the thief tunnel, this time having meph make the candles and logs out of clay (a little dfhacking was warranted).

I think the palisades are safe now. I haven't noticed the deadly dust hurting anyone except for all of the animals that fought the titan (which died).  The new animals I stationed there are fine.

I'm having a lot of trouble spreading the vampirism and I'm not sure why.  I have the vampire at the bottom of a 1x1 well, and I've stabbed him full of holes down there.  However, the water coming out of the well is only contaminated with pus.  There is blood spatter all over the walls, but the blood that gets into the water quickly disappears and never gets into the well bucket.

Maybe stop flow to it until the procedure is complete? That could be forcing the blood into the walls.

I managed to get them to drink blood-laced water but they didn't turn.  That is disappointing after all the buildup.  Maybe kobolds can't be vampires.

I just finished my year, and I'll write it up tomorrow.  A few teasers:
  • Our fort is now ruled by vampire overlords
  • Meph is a vampire chef with an artifact chef's hat
  • The next overseer will get to try out the elite vampire squads against the incoming orc and antmen sieges
  • Uzo the deity/vampire lord is leading the orc siege, and I am expecting an epic battle between him and vampire Nav

Who wants to oversee the next year?

Year 104, part 3
Imp, vampire mastermind

Late Autumn
I'm getting impatient with this vampire.  I made a new juicer for him and had him bricked into it.  He won't escape this time.  I ordered the lever pulled to poke him full of holes and left him to stew for awhile. Everything went according to plan, but when we pulled up water in the bucket it was laced with disgusting yellow pus instead of delicious vampire blood. He must have gotten an infection from the earlier wounds.  The peon that I had test drinking it just turned green and puked for a week straight.  He was torn apart when I pitted him against an antman, so I can only assume that the vampire transformation was a failure.  I have the vampire fished out of the well to heal from his wounds while a new juicer is constructed.

No sooner had I given those orders when I learn that a second antmen siege has arrived.  How many of these creatures are there down in that cave?  They find yet another hole in our perimeter wall.  Hopefully this is the last of them.

I close the main entrance and order trap spiders positioned along the cliff ramparts.  If they make it down the cliff through the traps and rain of bolas, they will have to make it through the ogres.  I don't mean to lose any kobolds to this siege. 

I order my military to stay within the burrow and fire through the ramparts, but Goat has a better idea.  He charges across the cliff bridge to take on the approaching horde with only his trusty ogre Obabo.  At first, it seems like he will succeed: his bolas sending legs and arms flying left and right.  Then I see a flying drone dive down and tackle him right off the bridge.  I order yet another coffin made.....

As the remaining antmen flee back toward the cave, a terrible beast emerges.  It sprays dust everywhere, just like the one that poisoned all of the war beasts I had guarding the depot before.  I am about to order the gates sealed when I get a report that it had encountered the fleeing antmen and immediately destroyed itself and them in a burst of dust.

Winter
Okay, the vampire is no longer oozing pus and the new juicer is finished.  This time I have them use a steel spike instead of wood.  My witch doctor says that it can't get an infection if it is completely dead.  So I order water added and then the lever pulled until the well just contains a delicious vampire paste.  I try drinking the blood, but I don't notice anything.  That damned drow lied to me!  If I hadn't fed him to a drake when he demanded that I actually let him go, I would feed him to a drake for lying!

Luckily I have another drow prisoner to question about this.  After a disappointingly short amount of drake mauling, he tells me that there is a ritual involved.  A little more mauling and I have the recipe.  I test it out on a fisherbold to make sure that it isn't a trick, and then I pit him against the drow as a test.  He makes the drow vomit everywhere with a stare, and then tears it apart with his tiny little hands.  I guess it worked!

I perform the ritual again for myself, and I can't believe how powerful it makes me.  I find that I no longer need to eat, sleep, or drink water.  I am stronger and faster than any normal kobold; I may even be as strong as an orc.  I can make others nauseous with a stare.  I do have a strange thirst for blood, though.

I proceed to turn the 9 kobolds I deem most important into vampires before I run out of blood: Nav, Goat, Meph, two skilled crafters, and 4 warriors to form a bloodguard.  If we need more, we can always juice the fisherbold vampire. I order closets built for the peons to sleep in so that we can feed in privacy, and I appoint the weakest kobold in the camp to give the lash those convicted of murder with a wooden bola thrower. 

One of the new vampire celebrates by making a truly legendary chef's hat for Meph

Late Winter
Three scouts arrive at the same time to tell me that a drow caravan, more antmen, and an orc siege have arrived.  How many times do I have to beat these antmen before they learn their lesson?  I currently have 83 prisoners: mostly antmen.  I guess I could use some more live targets and chitinplate to armor the ogres.  The orcs are a concern, though.  They brought cavalry, archers, and berserkers, led by a fearsome looking general named Uzo.

The drow manage to sneak past the orcs while the caravan guards distract them.  They bring the steelclad sauropods that I had been wanting, which makes me very happy. 

As my bloodguard equip themselves with the thoroughly poisoned and hexed weapons I have created for them, I question one of the orc captives about this Uzo.  He must have been exaggerating, because he claimed that this Uzo was not only the clan lord of the orcs, but also a god and a vampire lord of incredible speed.  He just looks like a naked orc with red eyes to me.  We will have to see how he stands up to our newfound power.

My lifelong goal of becoming immortal complete, I relinquish control of the fort to Goat and Nav.  There is nothing more that I can gain from being in charge that I can't gain through threats and violence.
