Well if it'll help progress the story along, then I'll support Grizzly's suggestion.

You address the two foreign knights. Alright, we'll send an advance team up ahead first to get a better idea of the camp's strength, then pull back and regroup with the others. Tell everyone to take cover. The men spread out and fade into the background of the forest. You look around at the groups of young men crouched behind trees and in the low gully nearby, and try to decide how best to go about this.

The knights are much too clumsy and conspicuous to mount a scouting mission, so you'll need to send some of the footmen. Who should go, and how many? You ponder this shortly. The swordsmen or archers would be best, as they're all lightly armoured and most of them were no doubt accomplished woodsmen back when they were still civilians, but unfortunately they are still ill-experienced in the ways of warfare and might not bring back all of the information that an experienced soldier would know to remember. The lancers immediately come to mind, but unfortunately they are encumbered by the same problem that the knights are seated with.

Send the archer team. They're more likely to be experienced than the others, and the light knight with them should be sneaky enough, since his armor is just cloth.

You rally all nine of the archers around you. Quite a few people for a simple scouting mission, but you figure they'll leave some of their men behind as they finish their approach. We'll get moving sir… Erm.. What exactly are we looking for?

The number and different types of enemies, their current positioning and formation, their supplies and equipment, any fortifications or traps in the area and what they are currently doing.

A confused look crosses his face as you list all the tactical information you require. Aye, sir.. Uhm.. We can do that... The archers move off to scout the suspected Litelachian force.

---

The archers move silently across the ground surrounding the clearing. Gallus sticks his head up just above the edge of the tall grass he lies in and eyes the enemy camp. Dozens of men mill about within the limits of the camp, cooking food and laughing with their friends. They seem surprisingly relaxed for a group of rebels in hostile country. The scattered ring of tents forming the perimeter of the camp conceals whatever may lie at its centre, likely a bonfire for the men to gather around during the cool nights. Oddly enough you can't seem to spot the commander's tent. Normally leaders enjoy to make their presence known, and Litelachian warlords are the chief offenders when it comes to such show. Perhaps it lies round to the opposite side, you reason.

A low whistle emanates from an especially thick copse immediately to your right, and you slither noiselessly towards the sound. Fawkes' lies waiting for you, and he nods as you approach, turning his head back to keep watch on the camp. He whispers in a low voice. There's a few pickets out here among the knolls, but we'll have to take care of them if we want to get any closer than this. They're on staggered shifts so once we make our move we'll have an hour to work with before the replacements sound the alarm. You nod. Right. Keep the men quiet for now. I'll go have a look myself. You crawl away towards the perimeter of the camp.

You creep silently across the cool ground, the grass shading you from the beating sun. You risk a peek above the grass and spot the nearest guard some five metres away. His shift just began so he's still quite alert, but you can tell he's already growing uncomfortable in the midday heat. He wipes the sweat from his brow and adjusts his grip on the long spear he carries, staring beyond where you lie off to his right and gazing at the edge of the forest surrounding the grove, where an attack would normally come from.

Gallus looks in either direction, trying to see someone who might be able to see this guard. If they're smart, they'll have made it so the guard's view range overlap, and they'd be able to sound the alarm if any of them go down. If that's the case, he'll have to try and fall back, see if they can do a simultaneous kill to silence several guards at once. If not...Gallus has a thought, right before he draws his throwing knife. They're relaxed, he hasn't been able to see the main tent...what if these aren't Litelachians? The knight tries to make out the uniform or symbol on the guard's clothing.

Yeah, to be honest I'm not sure what to do really.  I guess the most important thing is making sure that this is in fact the enemy we're supposed to be fighting.  Wouldn't want to rally everyone together and storm in, just to find that we've got the wrong guys.  We might also want to scout the camp perimeter to make sure its not a trap, that there aren't any other camps nearby and that they don't have an easy escape or way to flank us.

One thing at a time. Let's do small things now, rather than the over-reaching stuff we have been. Focus on this guy and the immediate actions we need to take. It'll be a nice change of pace for all concerned, i feel.

Guninanrunin, you can just do short updates for this, if you want and everyone else agrees...

You already know without looking that the sentries are spread too far apart to be able to see one another, which isn't surprising considering that the barbarians aren't well known for their tactical fidelity, and though they are all in plain view of the camp, no one would be looking towards the trees anyways. And why should they? They have sentries doing that already. Despite the Litelachians' characteristic indiscretion and laziness, you can't help but feel uneasy about the fact that there aren't more guards. Its almost as if they weren't expecting an attack, but how could they possibly have known you were coming? You dismiss the thought and sneak another look at the sentry. He seems to have gotten settled, leaning against his spear and scanning the stand of trees in the distance. His unkempt appearance and distinct lack of uniform aside from the long plaited beard that all Litelachian men wear clearly marks him as a member of his oafish race. You can't help wrinkling your nose at the stench wafting from the man's body. Its clear that these men are not impostors.

You consider the idea of falling back and circling round the edge of the camp to see if you can learn more about the camp before attempting an infiltration. You spent an hour crawling through the grass and sliding across the hard ground in order to avoid notice. Broad daylight reconnaissance is a delicate matter, and it would be risky and time consuming to leave the sentry ring and attempt to reenter it again.

You had your men check the surrounding tree line for evidence of any secondary camps, should they have left some men behind in order to catch scouts like yourself unawares, but they found nothing. You'd almost say it was too easy if not for the sheer amount of time and effort it took to get to this point.

Get to a guard. His shift will have just began, so put a knife in his throat, then move towards the camp, carefully. I want to see how many men there are. This feels suspiciously easy, almost like a decoy or a distraction. Maybe a lure, to get us to commit our forces while they flank and crush us?

We might be over thinking this.  Let's go alert the other squads about the camp but tell them that they look suspiciously ill prepared and that it might be a trap.  From there we can decide how to handle things.

Kill the pickets after they shift, then get the rest, and slip in and kill em.
