If you're flying Arcade, just go for max firepower, but in Realistic and Simulator performance matters more, in my opinion, and gunpods slow you down waaay too much.

Performance is important in Realistic and Sim, but you need to be able to hurt your enemy enough to really hinder them, too. It's a balance between being able to use your firepower and having enough firepower to be effective. I'm pretty sure most 109s come with 1 or 2 cannons already, though, don't they? That should be enough on its own, even though you'll probably have to make several trips back to the airfield between gun runs.

never play simulator in aircraft, too much of a hassle. i played simulator tanks once or twice and it's not bad.

and yes i honestly doubt my ability to kill things with a single MG151. The german peashooter MG's don't even count as weapons.

You just need to aim good. The Friedrich-series Bf109's with the MG151/20 have plenty of firepower for taking down fighters, although you need something heavier for bombers.
Especially in simulator the 20mm is scary as hell, as a few good hits can completely cripple a plane's ability to maneuver. In Realistic it's a bit easier to aim, so it should be plenty firepower there, too.

And simulator air battles isn't that hard. You only really need to keep in mind that situational awareness is all, and the rest comes with practice.

Situational awareness is annoyingly hard when enemy planes are pixels until they're within firing distance, though. That's been a long complaint to Gaijin that has never gotten fixed, and the handful of workarounds don't always work.

I, on the other hand, cannot abide it. This is why I'm usually an AB peasant, with lately moving over to RB and sucking balls 24/7.

RB's a very different beast, as you've hopefully already figured out.

First of all, what plane/nation are you using?

Yeah, I used to suck terribly at RB, and still do for the most part. But I've realized that 'murrican rank 2 planes are rather forgiving and relatively easy to use.

In RB I just use my duck with the 30mm MK103. It has some climbing issues but otherwise i nearly always get a kill or two here.

Turns decently, climbs... eh, awesome firepower, it's pretty tough and not bad as a BnZ plane. Try it.

Nah, I fly with mouse set to relative controls, and still do alright. I average one or two kills per sim battle, I think. It's doable with stabler planes such as the P-38, the Hellcat, and the Thunderbolt, but you kinda need more precise controls for twitchier planes.

Tier IV Spitfires mostly. I've been improving. I bet if I went back to AB now I'd do better.

That's, like, incredibly good. You know that, right?

I like to think that I am not a good pilot at all; it's just that the majority of pilots in War Thunder are terribly bad
