Ah. So the sort of fundamentalists that get a bunch of political power but drive everyone nuts with their particular brand of nutty conservatism. Reminds me of the excessively conservative Christians that pop up in the states now-and-then. Different religion, same madness.

Yeah, I've brought the comparison with creationists up before; at one point they forced their way into American politics and like new coke Islam they were a very recent fundamentalist reaction to modern change quite unlike what the religious sect it branched off from was. This is the same but a bit more forceful, I suspect largely because it's part of a much wider religious fabric stretching across the world with backing from some Sunni govs and organizations. The Eurasian continent speeds things up a bit, like a ripple tank.

While there are certainly problems with some UK Sharia courts (especially in cases with women) I don't see a fundamental issue. It all works on consent and they have to operate within UK law. Other religious groups (Orthodox Jews at least) also settle civil matters in their own traditional courts. There are also non-religious consent driven arbitration services.

The difference between such arbitration services and Sharia courts is that they work on things that tend to make sense.

So. Would you rather have a family being given advice by family relation specialists? Or a religious organisation with no real qualification, but accepted on blind faith?

Generally, no problem to the rest of us. May be a problem to individuals, though.

A woman on the metro once started claiming, loudly, that god was speaking to her and giving warnings about the the changes all the other passengers needed to make in their lives.  For some reason she did not appreciate when I started loudly reciprocating.  It was a fun experience, briefly placing myself on the other side of the "shouting crazy things in public" social barrier.
