Though that is a magnificent interpretation, one that I must use in the future,  I was going by the old definition of an atom as sonething that you cannot divide further. Perhaps it works both ways.

No, just Japan.

I smiled grimly.

On the other hand, you could call Liechtenstein an atom and it's constituent regions are it's protons and neutrons, as they make up the mass of a state and decide what the state actually IS, but otherwise aren't all that important except in nuclear chemistry (I.E. warfare) The cities are electrons, they're very small land-area wise but they're how a country interacts with other countries, through it's people.

But can you make a sensible, effective comparison between Liechtenstein and a red or white dwarf star?

No, but one can do so for Austria, the remnant inner core of the former Austrian Empire which imploded.

What is the state equivalent of a brown dwarf?

I'm trying to find other ways to mix geopolitics and astronomy together. It's quite difficult.

Well, for one, near the end of their lives larger stars expand massively and then explode.

The USSR was a red giant. It all makes sense now.

England and Ireland/Scotland/Wales/Cornwall could be considered a multi-star system.

The Holy Roman Empire was a planetary system, all the little germanies were planets orbiting Austria and Prussia

America is a blackhole, sucking in everything and everyone.

Russia is a red giant, swollen and bloated. EDIT: Ninja'd, nice~

I could think of some more but I'm lazy :P

Perhaps planets with moons in orbit around them would be the best way to describe them. Perhaps the Holy Roman Empire simply had too many moons and their conflicting gravitational pulls wrought terrible havoc upon the main planet.

Well, it was more like France, a rogue star, came in and destroyed the balance (dismantled the HRE), and all the little germanies were eventually swallowed up by the Prussian star. Then later, the Austrian star imploded and became a white dwarf, with the material left over eventually forming more planets.

How about France as a quasar? Spinning around itself, releasing quite a but of radiation - militarily, culturally etc.

A failed star?

North Korea and/or Somalia.
I would debate that. A failed state, while by no means an authoritative definition, is one which has lost the ability to maintain control over the use of force, i.e. Warlords, terrorists; one that has basically failed at laying claim to it's territory and the things that go on inside it, as well as failing economy and large refugee movement. A government that is not in control of things it should be. Somalia is a very good example of this, North Korea barely one. Afghanistan ranks very highly on the Wikipedia list, Pakistan also makes an entrance.

North Korea is just, something, something unstable, that baffles scientists. Something that just keeps oscillating, and could pop at any moment, and never does. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe in 10 years (or whatever that is at this scale).
