Also good to remember that in Ferguson, people honestly 100% do not care about the police militarization as a primary issue. They want to see justice done, and that is the primary concern on their mine. It's why so many people (something like 95% of protestors?) are obeying the curfew, and why the Black Panthers (who have been doing amazing work by the way keeping things peaceful and organized and focused and driving off looters and opportunities, mad props to them) have been trying to get people to obey the curfew.

For most of them, they are trying desperately NOT to make this a story about some vague government system situation, because the moment that narrative takes over Wilson is going to walk free, and seeing him behind bars is the driving force for the people who live there and have to live in fear of the police killing their children even after the riot forces go away.

Cops spent tonight inciting violence, attacking protestors and media alike with their sonic weaponry, beating and arresting people for "not walking fast enough", yelling insults and provocations at the crowd. Holy fuck.

Cop to media:
"You can keep filming if you just keep moving."
"Well we can't film them if we keep moving."
"I understand that."

Also to a cameraman livestreaming:
"You're gonna get roughed up if you don't keep moving"

Here's the term for exactly what is happening. There is a riot going on, but the riot is not made up of protestors.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_riot

Fucking. Hell. This is fucking sick. I can't believe the crowd hasn't fucking killed any police officers yet. I'd be murderous right now. These are the most peaceful goddamn people in the country.

Johnson may be a cop through and through, but he just fucking saved the situation. Police started marching on protestors, definitely gonna be a fight even if the protestors didn't fight back, Johnson showed up, forced the police back. Community leaders trying to calm the protestors, Johnson holding back the cops, every cop who can get their hands on a megaphone aside from Johnson is attempting to provoke the protestors.

Either Johnson is the one good cop, or there is some SERIOUS fucking social manipulation happening here, with good cop/bad cop write large enough for an entire population.

Cops: "If you are standing in the street or standing still, you may be subject to arrest."

Cop, to protestor walking around with a "Do Not Enter" sign: "Please put the street sign back in the ground where you found it"
https://vine.co/v/M3tTz3jmn2i
Protestors shout back: "We paid for it!"

https://twitter.com/alicesperi/status/501575687442923520
"Police telling media to "separate from protesters." Protester: "let me pull out my phone, now I'm media." This guy gets it."

Theres gotta be some deep racism, perhaps contempt at the Ferguson protestors.

That PD needs to be dismantled first thing in the morning and the whole PD needs to be investigated to it's core.

Also, CNN crews there actually witnessed some molotov cocktails being thrown, so, yeah, I dunno, it's a pretty fucked up situation on both sides. Though honestly the police are mostly to blame.

You know, I wonder what the national guard is doing there if they aren't even doing anything.

I'm still a bit in the past, but where I am there is live fire, lots of bullets being shot, definitely for real this time, Tim from Vice was shot by something, went down, but seems back up and alright now. Looks like rubber bullet to the leg.

Reports:
Residents start fire in street in hopes of keeping police back. Several prepping for confrontation with homemade bombs.

National guard has express orders to not get involved and simple "protect the police command center", on account of how they aren't as heavily armed as the police.

Two feeds I'm watching right now:
http://new.livestream.com/accounts/9035483/events/3271930

https://news.vice.com/article/live-from-ferguson-missouri?utm_source=vicenewstwitter

Media being forced to move, any reporter outside the designated media area will be arrested according to loudspeaker guy.

Now they're just being told they have to leave. No reporting allowed anymore tonight.

Dang, you live in Ferguson??

I agree here.

Though to be more heavily armed, they'd probably have to bring in stuff like Black Hawk helicopters and actual tanks.

Sorry, I meant where I was time-wise in the feeds. I ended up like an hour behind.

Only news channel doing jack shit right now, although CNN finally getting pissed off.

Fox reporter actually got arrested. Does this mean Fox will stop praising the police for being so responsible and careful and well mannered 24/7?

... No, probably not.

As to the media, the only reporters who've shown a willingness to break the police media lockdown have been the vice reporters. None of the other news orgs are close enough to actually film anything actually happening.

Most of America's news organizations aren't really journalists, they're just writers and actors.  They take stories from actual journalists and parrot them back with slightly different wording.  Same with official statements from whatever organization.  That's why you can Google something and get the same story reworded from a dozen different websites.  People quoting people quoting people ect., all the way back to a source that may or may not have been legitimate in the first place.

Johnson is now blaming the escalation solidly on the media, saying they media are "doing nothing but exacerbating the situation" and all need to leave.

Fox news reporter response:
"This is fucking ridiculous"

How? Just by being there? (rhetorical question because I doubt they would come up with a logical answer)

And Fox News is being rational for once.

Police forced Amnesty International out, that is confirmed.

Police (Johnson just repeated it on his CNN interview) have announced they want all protestors to return to their homes by 4pm tomorrow. Claiming the protestors caused the police response when they threw a bottle of frozen water, which put officers lives in danger. Also something about a scary bush? Uh... like I said, live CNN interview, might be better off watching it yourself.

Police just shot at least three tear gas canisters at me. One hit my leg, one my backpack. #Ferguson

Remember, folks, the curfew was lifted for tonight! The police would like to assure people that they are not infringing upon their right to be out and about in Ferguson.

Police quote to pair of journalists being detained: "You know you should have left a long time ago."

Also, this is from a guy called Neo Duckberg I'm chatting with elsewhere, he was with the Vice crew for a while but has been taking pictures since day 1. Enjoy.

Looking at the interview again, he said that people were (allegedly) throwing stuff from the darkness behind bushes and that it wasn't safe for them to go into the dark area.

Really though, they could have just used their helicopters to spotlight the area that people were throwing stuff from.

Ferguson update:

* Amnesty international sends observers to the US for the first time ever. Police promptly ordered them to stop observing and escorted them out of protest area. http://i.imgur.com/kJlZtlx.jpg

* Despite the ACLU recently winning a lawsuit against Ferguson for infringing on media rights to film and move through public areas:
- Media continue to be arrested for leaving their designated area.
- Police filmed marching through the streets blasting on loudpeakers while holding handcuffs out that media are to leave the protest area or be indiscriminately arrested tonight.
- One officer pointed a gun in a reporter's face and screamed at him to "get the fuck out of here and get that light off, or you're getting shot with this." (on video here http://www.vox.com/2014/8/17/6029739/video-police-threatens-to-shoot-reporter-taping-ferguson-protests )
- One journalist posts a photo of police targeting his driver window with laser sights while being fired upon with tear gas https://twitter.com/StanfordKMOV/status/501614895549644800/photo/1
- Al Jazeera film crew hit directly with teargas cannister http://tinyurl.com/mfl68dl

* National guard is on scene, and is more lightly armed than police. They have been relegated to guarding the staging area only.

* Police press release tonight:
- It began, I kid you not, with a prayer asking God to let "peace rain down upon us." I guess the instructions to officers in the street must have gotten confused at some point, since what they are actually raining down on citizens is not "divinely bestowed peace" but in fact "clouds of burning CS gas." Photo of peace-dispensing gun in action:

- Briefing continued by revealing a table with two guns confiscated. Said guns were found during a vehicular stop, not in use by protesters. Chief made no comparison between two unused handguns versus several hundred shotguns/automatic weapons pointed at and fired (rubber and beanbag rounds) at civilians all night long... http://i.imgur.com/BsY1H8M.jpg
- Table also displayed an unlit molotov cocktail claiming an example of ones thrown throughout tonight and yesterday, despite media widely reporting having not witnessed or recorded any incidents of molotov cocktails being thrown. Apparently Ferguson molotovs are not the normal huge firey explosion extremely obvious attention grabbing kind, but are instead stealthy, invisible weapons of the night.

* Story came out yesterday, but I just saw it, of Henry Davis who in 2009 was severely beaten in a Ferguson jail (caused a concussion), allegedly for provoking police (jail has video cameras, yet no video able to be produced to show this, because video was sped up to 32x speed at the time for unexplained reasons). Henry Davis was later charged with 4 counts of vandalism for bleeding on police uniforms as a result of them hitting him. When Davis sued them, officers changed their story and claimed they did not get blood on their uniforms.

* Egyptian government called for restraint on part of Ferguson police...
