I could've sworn brass catchers were in the vanilla game back in at least .9

Yeah, once I got marksmanship up, it popped up in my recipes screen, but on the item browser, the skill is listed as "gun(1)"

In ye olde days, guns covered ranged weapons. Then bows were added in, but brass catchers were in pretty early, before that change I believe.

I think "Gun" became "Marksman" when someone with names came along and fixed them.

The item browser reads the game definitions directly, when we changed the name of the "guns" skill to "marksmanship", we didn't change the internal identifier for the skill because that breaks saves.

Probably an issue with Robust Genetics/lack thereof and bad/good traits not getting chosen.  Or could be a bug, there've been a few.  Throw up the save and I'll take a look.
Any idea what was causing the problem? I've been looking at the game code and I'm curious.

I'm thinking of either streaming Cataclysm or making a let's play to show off the game to some friends who are really into survival games but aren't trying the game because of the way it looks. Wondering if anyone here would be interested once it goes up, if so I'll probably put some more effort into it and make it decent.

Mein gott, I took Fragile and even with 14 strength one hit from a tough zombie in the eyes took me down to one red bar of head health.

With fast zombies on that was basically a death sentence.

Once you have good armor a low health pool isn't quite as crippling.

The main thing that always got in the way of my wild mutant characters was the lack of butchering implement. Today while (s)mashing a car I found on a forest road to get glass and hopefully rag to make a glass shiv I learned that you can get long strings from them for easy stone knives. I also learned that smashing things can level your melee skill to 1. I think that from now on all my 0 combat skill characters will smash stuff till melee 1.

Did you start in a shelter? You can make a lot of stuff just from two rocks and otherwise only what's in the shelter, using the wood and the windows.

Also, if you have scrap metal, you can make a "makeshift knife" which is better, out of a scrap and a rag/thread/duct-tape/so-on.

So. Roller Derby Character with quick and fleet-footed can still outrun fast zombies zombies on flat surfaces. Playing with mundane zombies though, because fuck fast special zombies, so unsure if it could outrun faster dogs or Grim Howlers.

Kind of intense. Weaving through cities avoiding grass like the plague and cutting through buildings, looting on the fly.

Very fast and loose game play, nice difference from traditional slow buildup or night-time runs. Do I try and grab that aluminum bat and risk getting caught in that line of zombies, or break for a window right now? Very nice.

I've turned Classic Zombies off for this latest game. I am liking this quite a bit. More difficult than Classic.

Also, I now present to you after formulating a MASTER PLAN:

Nah, this is for those mutant starts that dump you in the middle of nowhere surrounded by swamps and other nasty places.

Based on a somewhat short-lived test character of mine, it seems that at least in the short term, one can subsist on nothing but tainted meat and random unclean water sources. If your stats are high enough to not care about the poison/food poisoning and pain then you can eat whatever you want.
