So, one of our assistants brought up using a conventional jet engine for the Valhalla....why didn't we think of this before!? We can always have a dual propulsion engine(conventional jet for atmospheric, something else for space). Also, I say having them automated should be a good idea

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

3 Reasons:

1. What do you burn oil with. Oxygen. What is the planet's main import: OXYGEN. Gonna be expensive, and fuel tanks take a lot of place, especially when you need to use liquid oxygen for both space and ground operations. Lasers based engines can function in any athmosphere.
2. Ever seen what happens when excessive dust(I take this athmosphere's dust is similair to volcanic ash) gets into an engine. It's not a nice sight.
3. Oil based engines are not strong enough for what the ship needs to do. Even in a normal environement we'd need additionall oxygen injection.

You could try a hybrid laser/ jet fuel engine, but it's going to be large, cumbersome and waste a lot of space.

One thing for sure: reserve them name Valkyrie for dual use fighters, if not transformable fighters please.

Im resubmitting my ship for this round, and i have an idea:
a big rod of a heavy material (like tungston of glass) acting as a rocket. aim it at a target, fire and watch as the near invisable rod of material impacts with a lot of force.

Thanks for describing the general principle of a mass driver. Or you know, any modern day gun.

How do you plan on arcelerating it. Rocket engine, railgun,...
Also, course correction, you have to be pretty close to have even the slightest amount of accuracy.

.....Umm, we already said no pirate ships. You want a rescue vessel? Fine, design it, but don't call it a former pirate ship.

On a side note, I like how we are all generally going for a Norse theme with our ship naming(with a couple exceptions)
The Heimdallr long range laser Corvette's advanced triangulation system detects no such exceptions.
Changes are in bold

Lux Heimdallr Class Laser corvette
corvette class
Team:us, mark, anton
time:3 months
Volume: about 10m*10m*40m,
general description: Small and elongated, the Heimdaller is basically a large laser, built with as few rare components as possible. The laser is powered by a large battery and several large ceramic capacitors, which allows it to make do with a much smaller reactor. The laser is controlled by a set of advanced targeting algorithms specialized in triangulating ships from long distances using large amounts of sensor data, making it compatible with sensor drones, and the corvette itself contains an Oculus Sensor system. The ship is also equipped with external drone racks, allowing it to launch a small number of drones such as the Oculus or hiram.
Priorities:[/b]
Laser focal range-2
targeting algorithms-2
cheap materials-1

Might be a good idea, but the weapon would have massive recoil, and in space that would be a huge problem. That's why I like lasers.

Oh, BTW, I do believe we ARE on the next turn 10ebbor since UR updated with the first month

Update is ready. It's a bit messy...

I'll think how to improve the format for the next turn
We weren't when I posted.

Anyway, about the recoil, we could use a rocket engine to propel the shell, which would turn it into a kinetic warhead. Advantages are no recoil and some steering capability, disadvantage is that the heat of the engine is fairly noticeable.

Edit: Also, a shell the size of a bus might be a tad exagerated.

Not if the bus is filled with !!cats!! tough.

For serious, i think we could use some laser-equipped fighters to escort traders.

I'd prefer to focus on intimidating the pirates. The main Idea for the Heimdallr is that the pirates, unable to be certain that there's no Heimdallr in range, become afraid of sensor drones.

Hmm, the Heimdallr looks pretty good.
But then again, it's basically a hugeass laser, so "pretty good" is basically the only option.

its a rocket. no recoil. think recoil-less launchers. you dont see SAM systems with recoil either.

Recoilless also means slow initial acceleration. Without guidance of some sort I don't really see it being effective against a target that is doing any sort of evasion. Would be nice for planetary, asteroid, or orbital facility bombardment though...

Distance is not much of an obstacle to detection in space, I am not convinced that the heimdallr would be an unknown threat unless it was hiding behind something. It would make a great siege weapon though, leave a bunch of them around a pirate asteroid with orders to shoot anything that moves in the asteroid's vicinity and you could make life pretty tough for them...
