I think the little purples are made to spawn in asteroid auras on natural blocks.  That is to say, a ship's aura with natural blocks wouldn't spawn squids because it counts as a ship-type stellar object.
So how would you go about making that different? Would that require building an asteroid around a ship pretty much? Because that sounds incredibly labour intensive.

EDIT: And another part of multiplayer would be eventual resource scarcity, forcing players apart and together at the same time, into further apart and tighter clusters of asteroids as they continued trying to glean any materials to expand the fleet from the remaining space-rocks. Never wanting to move too far away from the original areas because that's where the best factories etc are, but at the same time, having to go further afield to find anything worth having.

Yeah, it'd involve building an asteroid with a ship in the middle.

In combat it'd hardly matter though, dirt crumbles so easy that your ship would get shredded down to armor within the first salvo.

I was thinking it would be more for stealth/surprise factor than for combat effectiveness. Maybe as ambush/lookouts around a valuable base?

In that case, you'd need to hollow a natural roid.  Player ships show a different colored radar icon.

Alright, im back after randomly being gone for a few hours:

The ship I made is still going well, I decided to hold off putting guns on until it's either necessary, or it won't unbalance it.
Now, I have a few questions though:
How does one make a Uranium ingot? This simple concept is evading me like a butterfly covered in butter.
Also, it seems to me that there are more levels of the drill than you can make with just iron and cobalt, since I can't mine Thallium or Heavy Rock yet.

You'll want a tri-drill first, which is made with 3x enhanced drill and some titanium.

Uranium is made with multiple plutonium, so it's further refined.  I think 9 ore = 3 ura = 1 plut.

You just contradicted your own logic there.
Either way though, I have about 40 ore, and can't do anything with it, in any of the crafting blocks.
I'll try the tri-drill though, thanks.

Are you using the custom crafting set.  I think it's useless in vanilla...

Alright, downloaded the item pack thing. Going to restart game now. Good-bye, awesome giant ship of death.

EDIT: You know what? I'm going to build something obscenely huge and sexy now.

Don't feel too bad. We've all done that at some point. Plus, you'll now have access to better drills so mining won't be such a pain.

The item pack addon comes with a text file with a russian name.  If you open it, you can figure out the crafting recipes pretty easily.

Or I can use the wiki :D.
Ninja'd

Alright, the lights just flickered at my house. I don't know how long we'll remain in contact.

The first thing I did what I grabbed two stacks of cobaltite and iron and then boosted to a 35k ton... planetoid?

Tri-drill accomplished.
Wait. I need titanium. Damn it.

The wiki lists the vanilla recipes, not the addon recipes.

35kt roid is idea.  Circle around it and see if it's got a hollow side - my local roid had Heavy Rock exposed to space in a massive crate on one side.
