Farming
Farming is the most reliable way to obtain food, but it is also the most complicated to prepare. To get started, you must place a farm plot. You can place a farm plot on soil or mud, inside or outside. Dwarves assigned as Farmers will plant seeds according to your selections in the farm plot menu, where you can also see the recommondations of the dwarf who set up the farm plot, and all dwarves helü with the harvest unless you set orders to the contrary. A plant will generally grow either underground or aboveground and have different preferences regarding soil, so be careful with the seeds you select.
Farms require more or less regular irrigation. This can be done by normal rainfall, diverting water sources with channels and floodgates, or by designating areas to be irrigated manually. The latter method can also be used to move mud or soil in order to prepare an otherwise unsuitable area for farming (such as many underground areas).
Some plants that you farm aren't immediately edible, but can be processed at a millstone or farmer's workshop to make flour, sugar, spices, or other plant products such as thread for cloth-making or dyes. Many plants can also be brewed into alcoholic drinks at a brewery.
You can greatly increase your farm output by using a fertilizer such as potash. Potash is obtained from evaporating lye water, and lye water is obtained from soaking wood ash. This can be done at an ashery.
Your available seeds are:
10 Plump helmet spawn - Plump helmet is a purple fungus that can be eaten raw, cooked, and brewed into dwarven wine. It prefers wet, clayish soil or mud, can be grown all year long, and takes 8 weeks to grow. It is an underground crop.
10 Ash morel spawn - Ash morel is an ash-gray fungus that can be eaten raw, cooked, ground into ashdye, and brewed into ash rum. It prefers wet, clayish soil or mud, can be grown all year long, and takes 8 weeks to grow. It is an underground crop.
10 Underwheat seeds - Underwheat is a yellow grain that that can be ground into underwheat flour, and brewed into underbeer. It prefers sandy soil or mud, can be planted in spring, and harvested in the fall. It is an underground crop.
10 Pig tail seeds - Pig tail is a gray crop that can be brewed into dwarven ale and processed into pig tail thread. It prefers clayish soil or mud, can be planted in the early-to-mid fall, and be harvested mid-to-late fall. It is an underground crop.
10 Cave pumpkin seeds - Cave pumpkin is a maroon vegetable that can be eaten raw, and cooked. Its seeds can be pressed for oil. It prefers dry sandy soil, can be grown all year long, and takes 16 weeks to grow. It is an underground crop.
The furnace and the cage are finished, and you order the furniture you have built. You dig into the ground, finding marble and hematite (+3 sandstone, +2 marble, +2 hematite), and use one of the resulting rooms for the sub-lieutenant's office.
The smith refines 2 of the bituminous coal into coke for a net gain of 16 coal.
You send the farmer to harvest the aboveground crops. He picks 4 servings of crow berries, 2 garlicnuts, and 2 garlicnut leaves
Crow berry is a black fruit that can be eaten raw, cooked, and brewed into crow berry wine. It prefers wet, clayish soil, can be grown in spring, and takes 8 weeks to grow. It is an aboveground crop.
Garlicnut is a white nut that can be eaten raw, cooked, and pressed into oil. It grows on a bush whose leaves can be eaten cooked. It prefers wet, clayish soil, can be grown in summer, and takes 8 weeks to grow. It is an aboveground crop.
