Also, have the military try to catch some silver deer alive. Have them bring them leaves and stuff, too.

I hope an animal trainer migrates soon...

Year 126, Week 8 (Midspring, The Oak)
Oku Ura is waning
Aveanaye is full

Your smith goes on break as your military goes subdue one of the silver deer. Once more you see them confused about where to put the animal. The mason creates a nest box and four cabinets, the carpenter five doors. You create a craftsdwarf's workshop, tying up one more toolbox. You order mugs, but have a hard time deciding who should be creating them, and watch the dwarves to go sleep in their well-made beds.

The miner digs deeper, providing 5 granite boulders and finding a gold vein along the way, until he cancels digging - hollow noise detected.

"Some events will cause your dwarves to cancel the job that triggered the event, in order for you to examine the safety of the order. Among these are attempted mining into damp, hot, or hollow walls, which potentially hide underground water, magma, or caverns. These all have their upsides and downsides. Water and magma hold great dangers if breached incorrectly, while breached caverns may allow creatures entry to your fortress that are worse than what you may encounter aboveground. On the other hand, water is important for life, magma provides a free source of heat, and caverns can hold underground soil, water, and magma, and other resources for you to take."

A message from your friend also arrives.

"Only just got the chance to look at your message. Looks like you're in for some fun. You have a Baba Yaga type that really likes to meddle, it seems, and if things go bad, you might end up next to her living room. If you can, build up some walls aboveground not only against your nominal foes, but also against that Forest of Eyes. Last thing you need is that Baba to wander in easily... and you can count on other hag or troll types to dwell in that forest as well."

Have the military type(Yes, meticulous record keeping is essential to every military force) tie up the deer. Also, try to tame it and find out if its male or female.

Agreed. Silver deer sound harmless.

Have someone smooth the wall and carve fortifications into it. That way, we know what's on the other side.
Make a new cage, stick the deer in it if it isn't tamed. Have the military bring it leaves for food when they're off-duty, armed mind you.
Ah...keep important industries going, and have the mason make blocks when he has nothing else to do.

Year 126, Week 9 (Late spring, The Oak)
Oku Ura is empty
Aveanaye is waning

Thikut Dyegorges continues to be on break rather than smelting or forging. You find an option to bind prisoners, and thankfully it applies to the deer. You set Fath Quakeamber to try and tame it, but so far you have no success, even with gathered leaves and grasses. The carpenter makes a cage and four doors, the mason 20 rock blocks, and the farmer makes ten wooden cups. Right on time before the dwarves go off drinking again.

Shorast Torchtin smoothes the wall and carves a fortification into it, revealing...

An underground cavern with fungiwood, towercaps, grazing elk birds, various sorts of underground flora, and a number of gem and ore types in the wall. The floor, at least where you carved the fortification, is a few lvels further down.

"Ranged attackers close to fortifications can fire through them at no penalty. The safe distance depends on skill, but only applies on the same height level. Creatures one level down, even at master bow and archery skill levels, receive a penalty for attempting to shoot through the fortification. Fortifications can be built directly, carved into any built wall, or into any smoothed natural wall."

I am suspicious of that smoothed wall, unless it is a stalactite smoothed by water.

(It's a multi-tile fungiwood. Well, what it might be looking like in the next release.)
